1024x768 - Possible?

I have an idea for a game that would use very, very detailed art. It's the sort of stuff that I don't know if 800x600 could handle very well. Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally sure...but a higher resolution might be nice.

Now, I know that it's probably impractical since AGS is already sort of slow when you use 32-bit color and alpha channels...at 320x240. That's the thing...I have a somewhat strange style of game design that would require NOTHING to be animated at all. Essentially, the only sprites I'd be using would be 1024x768 screens. It's not Myst-style, but I guess that's the closest my idea comes without revealing too much.

So, under those circumstances, is it physically possible? Could I write, say, a plugin to increase the resolution, or would that require Chris to increase the max JUST FOR MY SAKE?

No.

No, and even if it's possible it's impractical.

Well you may request, but since it's probably JUST FOR YOUR SAKE, so don't expect much. The 800x600 res was the result of answering people's requests about higher resolutions already, so this was already regarded as the highest usable resolution at the moment.

VERY old versions of AGS did once support a res. of 960*600 (which actually used physical 1024*768 mode) though, only few OLD games used this.

I hate to say this but if you want the 1024x768 resolution use the Wintermute Adventure Game engine at www.dead-code.org/

do you really need it? show us some backgrounds.

Only like 3 people have used 800x600 as far as I know.

Actually, I'd kinda like 1024x768 support myself, but since I haven't made any games yet my vote shouldn't count for much.  ;)  Once I've actually finished a game, then maybe I'll be more vocal about it.  (But probably not.)

Incidentally, for the game I'm working on I am using 800x600 resolution--but since the game isn't even far enough along yet to warrant a GIP thread, that, again, shouldn't count for much...

All right. Never mind then. I guess 800x600 can probably work. AGS is the easiest to work with anyway, so I'm not switching.

The reason 1024x768 is currently not supported is basically down to performance; I'm not happy that AGS would run at a reasonable speed at that resolution, so rather than allow people to create a game then let them down with the speed when they run it, instead it just doesn't provide the option.

I'll be looking into performance issues in a future version.
