Title: Suggestions for AGS games that crash?
Post by: alkis21 on Wed 08/12/2004 22:55:05
A very low percentage of the people who download my game reported that it crashes as soon as they run it, with no message.
What I suggest to them is to:

-Change the sound settings from winsetup.exe
-Close other applications before launching the game
-Update their graphics & sound card drivers

Is there anything else I can suggest?

Updating DirectX is always worthwhile too.

However, I've not heard of any reports of AGS games crashing without an error message... are you sure this is what's happening? What version of windows are these people running?

Windows XP, all 4 (?) of them. According to them, they get a very brief black screen as the resolution changes and they get immediately thrown back to Windows.

Which version of XP, and/or which service pack?

Have they tried switching resolution in the game Setup (ie 320x200 vs 640x400) and / or enabling Letterbox mode? Sounds like some sort of DirectX/graphics driver issue.

What resolution & colour depth is the game designed for?

Service Pack 1. I doubt anyone would want to play the game in low res. :( Letterbox mode? Do you think that would help? The game is 640x400, 256 colors.

It's worth trying it in low-res, and with letterbox mode, just as a way of testing whether it still crashes and thus narrowing down the problem.
