I was just loading up my game to test it and got this message:

---------------------------
Illegal exception
---------------------------
An exception 0xC0000005 occured in ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0x00427538 ; program pointer is +5, ACI version 2.70.864, gtags (0,20)

AGS cannot continue, this exception was fatal. Please note down the numbers above, remember what you were doing at the time and notify CJ on the Tech forum.
Most versions of Windows allow you to press Ctrl+C now to copy this entire message to the clipboard for easy reporting.

Did this crash appear every time you tested your game, or just once or twice?

Since it happens every time, is there any chance you could upload your game for us to take a look at?

Sure.Ã,  How would I go about that?

I hadn't realized this before, but this actually happened when I was transfering the game files from one computer to another.

Now what seems to have worked was to create a new template of my original game, and this new one works okay.

Do you still have the faulty one? If so, please zip up the game folder minus the Compiled folder and upload it somewhere so CJ can investigate the problem.

I'll be happy to.  Is there a way to send it to him directly?

Pumaman

Yes, please mail it to ags@jibblers.plus.com if you don't want it to be publically accessible.

Ok, I've just looked into this and it looks like your sprite index file is corrupt.

To solve it, just delete the SPRINDEX.DAT file in your game folder, then load your game into the editor and save it again.

However, I'm very interested in what caused this to happen. Do you remember what the last thing you did was before the problem started happening?

Did you recently upgrade your game from a previous version of AGS, or have you been using 2.7 all along?

sloppy

First of all, thanks for helping with this.  Deleting the SPRINDEX.DAT file did work.

With all the work I put into my game, the thought of losing it all was pretty disconcerting.  From here on in, I'll always have a backup of the game files stored somewhere.

To answer your questions, I have been using 2.7 from the beginning.  What must have happened was my hard drive had crashed.:-\  I took it to a data recovery lab which got most of my computer files saved, but from then on the AGS game wouldn't load and I got that error message.  I was able to continue by exporting a template and using that.  But now, by doing what you said, I've been able to save the original files.

Once again, I appreciate your help very much!

I know this is solved and all but this happens to me all the time too. Every game I start I have to take it out of my AGS 2.61 folder and put it into my folder called New AGS! so I can test it.

Pumaman

Glad it's solved!

Very good idea, and something that everyone should take note of!!
