Hi,

When I try to play an AGS game, I get the message:

"Unable to initialize your audio hardware.
Problem: Failed to init digital sound driver"

Anyone know what is causing this? Everything else on my computer uses sound just fine.

Maybe it helps if you run winsetup.exe in the game folder and select a different device for digitial sound.

Maybe there is an application open in the background which is already using the device. I get this error when I try to start 2 instances of a game, then the secon game reports the error when it starts.

Nope, tries both. Still getting the error?

I encountered this problem a few weeks ago, when I swap from Windows 2000 to Win XP.

I solved it changing the Playback device of Windows.
To do this, from the Start icon, choose Settings > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio tab, and check wether you have several Playback devices in the list. If yes, try changing it and start your AGS game.

I don't know if it's the answer to your problem, but for me, it worked! ;)

In fact, the error on my computer is not corrected. But I found this, from SteveMcCrea:
QuoteWhen I try to run a game made with 2.6, it pops up a messagebox that says "Failed to your initialize audio hardware" unless I change the Digital Sound from 'Default DirectSound Device' to 'Default WaveOut Device'.

This happened on both machines I tried it on - both were running Win2000 and DirectX 9 I think.

It's okay now!
