Hi, I'm trying to load my game to edit in AGS but it won't even open. It just gives me this message:

"Unable to load the sprite file ACSPRSET.SPR. The file may be missing, corrupt or it may require a newer version of AGS."

I have the newest version of AGS. I have enough memory. My computer is new. I looked in the forums to see if any other people had this problem. They were all years old posts for old versions of AGS, none of the solutions worked here. I tried looking for an acsprset.srp backup file, wasn't there. I tried removing the sprindex.dat file, didn't help. I tried reinstalling AGS, didn't wok. I even tried the old fashioned just restarting my computer. Also my acsprset.srp file is only 0 KB for some reason. What happened to it?

My game was half finished. I had nine rooms populated with eighteen characters, and a bunch of objects, animations, and programming. I don't know what to do and I don't want to have to spend the time rebuilding what I already did. Please help. Thank you.

Gilbert

The acsprset.spr file contains all the sprites. If it has a size of 0 kb, that means it is corrupted and all its contents are gone. If there is still a file called backup_acsprset.spr you may try renaming it to acsprset.spr to see whether you can recover most of the works (though you mentioned you didn't see a backup file), otherwise you can only revert to a backup of your game files (provided you backup your files regularly) or re-import the sprites to rebuild them.

How would he do that if the corrupted file doesn't let him open the game at all? Maybe create a new game and use that "acsprset.spr" file? Would the missing sprites in that new file be a problem, so one would have to import images just to rank up the sprite number?

I've tried this. Just copy the file with that name from the AGS folder (the default sprite set) to replace the corrupted file and the editor could open the game for me. However, this is not guaranteed as it may depends on how many things has linkage to sprites. Either way, you'll have the troubles of re-importing the sprites and fixing references to sprites (Views, Characters. Items, Scripts, etc.).

Alright. I'll keep this in mind. Although I continue to prefer backing up my files on a bi-daily basis. :)
Good luck, Ico!

I wonder what happened to the file to corrupt it. I did get the game open by replacing the acsprset file with the one from the demo game that comes with AGS. It looks like all the data is sill there. I'm just going to have to re-upload all the sprites. At least I don't have to rebuild the entire game. Alright. Thanks guys. :)
