I think that it's (and no promises I'm right hehe)

Uniform makes it so no matter if he's going left/right or up/down (in relation to the pc monitor left/right, up/down) it's always same speed of movement rate.

X/Y is so you can change the up/down and left/right to be two different speeds.. yes?  I think anyway.  That seemed to be what Cat did when I was playing with that option last night.  Though I didn't use a large difference in the two numbers.

Guess it'd be good going up/down a ladder for example,  then I can make them go slower than when they're walking normally on the ground.

Heh Spyros, you'd been away for too long (though the reason was obvious ;) ).

Actually I didn't know about it either, I think meowy got  it, but to be more specific, is that you can now set independently the horizontal and vertical walking speeds of a character, which is possible if that checkbox is unchecked, if it's checked, it reverts to the old behaviour that the horizontal and vertical walking speeds are the same.

Yep exactly - if "Uniform movement speed" is checked then it behaves just like older versions. If you uncheck it, you can use the new feature as meowy and Gilbert describe.
