Weird walkbehind issue.

Hey AGS forums!
I am seriously a little confused about something. Sometimes when my player is moving thorough out my  game he is suddenly drawn behind parts in the background. It frustrates me me because there is no walkbehind there, and I can't seem to figure out why.
Because it randomly happens. If I run the game and start it in the actual room it's fine, everything works. When I run the game in another room and enter another the room it starts acting up. Has this ever happened to anyone else out there? Or am I just seeing things?
What should I do?

Thats kind of wierd. The only thing I can think of is that there is a walkbehind there, but you haven't set the baseline. Could that be it? ???

Scummbuddy

how much time do you give the player in the one room before jumping to the other room, what i could think is that the previous rooms' walkbehinds are being moved into the new room as if they were put in there. this may be moved to the main tech forum in a day after more clarification.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Yeah! You might be right! But it seems to occur really randomly. Sometimes right after I load the game and other times after I am testing it for a while. But It looks like it is always a walkbehind from the previous room though.  I wonder if this has to do with using too many walkbehinds? Or maybe a palette issue? I haven't a clue.
But I think you're on to something there.

prehaps you should compile what you have of the game, and zip it ready to send to chris for when he gets back. ill go ahead and move this.

Hey it's Dan here. Should I send it to you with a detailed  explanation of what I am talking about or is there somewhere else I should put it?

Pumaman

Very strange, I've never heard of anything like this before.

What version of AGS are you using?

Anyway, yes - if you could upload the game along with instructions of how to recreate the problem, I'll take a look.

piraatlife4me

Hey it is I. Thanks for helping me out.
I am using the latest version of AGS 2.6.
Where should I upload it. Do you know of a spot to actually upload this?
Here are the instructions on where to find the problem.

You start the game you are outside the hotel.
1.Go inside talk to man with gun
2.Use the police badge on the man.
3.Say the first line to make him believe you
4.leave the lobby.
5.Go back in click on the lost and found box several times to  get the carkeys. Then leave the room
6.Watch the little cutscene
7.Outside hotel now so up about  three screens.
8.Go in the video arcade walk to the back of the room.
You will see what I am talking about.
look at the guy playing the arcade.

If I try to run the game and set the Globalint that places a certain NPC in the room the game is fine. But if I run the game after all of these other events stuff occur I have problems. Just look in the room editor under the room titled "Inside video arcade."
If you can find me a place to upload it so I can send it to you. Sorry I don't own any webspace.
Thanks alot, I really appreciate it.

How big is the game? Small enough to send by email?

piraatlife4me

No! It is actaully really big. The actual game folder is around 95 mb. I think this has to do mainly with all the wav files in there, but yeah it is quite a monster. You would need all these files to see the problem. Would'nt you? Is there a spot on the AGS forum where you can upload games?
Thanks

maybe youll have to take out all the sound files and zip it. if that would lead to crashing, then find the smallest wav sound you can find and copy it as many times as you have sound files in the game. move all of your original sound wave files to a safe folder away, and "replace" them in the other folder with the new small wav file and name them accordingly, then zip

Yeah, take out all the sound effects - I can just replace them with a dummy sound file to get it to run.

What size is the Compiled folder once you zip it up?
Recompile the game without any sound files, and see if that helps as well.

Edit: oh also, I'll be out of town now until next weekend, so if you can manage to get it uploaded somewhere by then, that'd be great.

piraatlife4me

Ok! I replace all the wav files with a dummy file and compression I got it down to about 9.63 mb. I compressed my compilied folder and got it down to 4.46 mb. Still pretty big but a lot better. I willl try to score some webspace to get it up.
Thansk again

Thanks for going to the trouble of uploading it for me - it really helped track the problem down.

The problem is that the walk-behind mask has some invalid colours in it (ie. 16-255). I presume you imported it from a paint package, and there are some unwanted walk-behind areas there, which are causing unwanted effects in the engine.

I have modified the editor to detect and repair this problem, so if you could download the new 2.6 SP1 Final which should appear shortly, load room 24 into the editor and save it again, that should eliminate the problem.

Thanks again.

piraatlife4me

Hey Thanks alot!
That is so cool of you to go through all this trouble to help me check this out. Did the little walkthrough make any sense? It is kind of a big demo. So when the new updated version of AGS comes available I can just install it, open my game up,load room 24, save it(with the newer version) and it should work? Sounds good to me. Will the newer version fix all the rooms with this problem because I have found another room in the game recently with the same problem? Thanks again and I will keep checking back for  2.6 SP1 Final

That's right. The new version is now available - see the sticky thread at the top of this forum. It should also fix other rooms with similar problems, yes.
