Every year, the AGS community embarks on a quest to find the best games made in the last year. All games are eligible, that were added to the AGS Database (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/allgames/) in the year 2024. There is a For Your Consideration thread (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=62175.new#new) where authors can promote their games and players get a good overview what might be worth playing.
The awards are a two-step process: First there is a nomination phase where all(*) community members can nominate the eligible games in several categories. The top five games of each category make it to the voting (as long as they've received at least five nominations). During voting, all(*) members of the community can vote for their favourite games.
The final result is then announced in a live ceremony that can be joined either with a special client or any regular irc client.
* Attention:Last year we had the case that one game author asked friends and students to register and nominate their game. While this was not strictly forbidden by the rules, it is definitely not appreciated. The AGS awards are for and by the AGS community and not a competition for mobilizing your fans.
So, for this year,
only accounts who registered before 2025 are allowed to nominate and vote. If you are a long term member of Discord but didn't have a forum account, yet, please contact me, we might be able to figure this out for you.
The categories will stay the same as last year (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/adventure-related-talk-chat/127942-ags-awards-2023-nominate!/)
Party like it's 1990 in this thread!
The categories are:

This was a great year for AGS. It's hard to believe how many top-quality commercial and non-commercial games were released--it's really going to be a tough competition to win the awards! 8-0
For my part I managed to release 3 different games this year (2 for MAGS, one not) which has been a great year for me as a very-much-still-learning gamedev. Despite my bigger projects moving very slowly, I was able to practice and grow in so many different areas thanks to MAGS.
Speaking of which, I feel like this has also been an amazing year for MAGS in general. Every month it felt like there was a really healthy number of entries--so many I couldn't play them some months--and I wouldn't be surprised to see many MAGS games from this year represented among the eventual nominees. (nod)
On the whole, this year has been a fun and vibrant time to be an AGS player and developer. I look forward to the nomination and voting stages as an excuse to play more of this year's games. :)
Quote from: cat on Wed 01/01/2025 18:01:22Step # 1 - nomination time!

Not that anyone's likely to be misled by this single line, but...yeah.
Nominations are now open until Sunday 02 February 2025 (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/awards/nominate/)
Go play the games and then nominate your favourites!
Okay, it felt like work, but I dutifully nominated all the great games. Too bad I couldn't nominate The Phantom Fellows and The Adventures of the Black Hawk. Is there nothing that can be done if the authors have forgotten to enter their game in the database?
Please have a look here:
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/adventure-related-talk-chat/127942-ags-awards-2024-add-your-games-to-the-database/msg636668116/#msg636668116
Please do it, AGA! 8-)
By contact I mean the author should write a PM to AGA.
So, do it Paul! :-D
I've contacted the Black Hawk dev and asked him to do it too!
I don't have an actual release of my own this year, but since I've been doing videos of MAGS games lately, I could expand that into this: once the nominations are published I'll make a list of the games and try to play and record as many of them as I can to try and raise awareness and give people a chance to get a look at the nominees even if they don't have the time for proper playthroughs of their own.

I think that would be very nice. This year has 10+ of full length games releases, and very few will have had the time to play them all. (Not to mention
@FransisKransis , who always releases something big and complex just a month before nomination time. ;) )

Thank you so much my friend! I really appreciate you and I'm happy to say, thanks to you,
@heltenjon and
@Postmodern Adventures and of course to
@AGA I am so excited to say The Phantom Fellows (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/adventure-related-talk-chat/127942-ags-awards-2024-for-your-consideration/) is now in the nominations :)
Thank you all so so much for embodying the spirit of community and rallying together to help me, I am grateful for you all!

I couldn't agree more. The quality this year (2024) is epic overall. This will be suspensful (nod)
Quote from: cat on Wed 01/01/2025 18:01:22Step # 1 - nomination time!

While you're at this, people, please also go to the game's database page, find the box marked
Public opinion and click on the link marked
your votes. A game needs at least five player ratings to get those nifty orange cups. Although comments are nice, ratings also help. (And ten years from now, this will be a reminder for you that you've already played that game.) For those of you who don't like to write comments, the rating page allows a comment, but does not require it. Thus voting/rating is done anonymously.
How are you getting along with nominations? The first votes have already arrived, but we need many more for a meaningful result.
Is the nomination page working alright or did someone have technical difficulties?

I'm personally waiting until closer to the deadline, so I can make a more informed vote. (nod)
(Since I would've had more time to play through games and think things over.)
I haven't managed to play many games this past year. Will nominate once I get a few more down, hopefully this week or next
Same here. Taking some time to play games this month. (nod)

Same with me.
I nominate the ones I've already played, then edit when I've played something else good.
As
@heltenjon has pointed out, you can modify your nominations until the deadline. So you can already nominate the games you have played so far and change your votes when you play more.
However, it's totally up to you how you will do it :)
I'm glad there is interest in the awards and people are playing the games :-*
And voilĂ ! :)
As you might have noticed,
@AGA and
@tampie85 made a shiny new website for AGS and migrated it last weekend! Hooray for that!
While nominations are still ongoing, there is now a new URL for them:
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/play/ags-awards/ (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/play/ags-awards/)
Could you please verify that your can access the page, see your nominations and modify them?
And if you haven't nominated, yet: There is still a week left to do so - we could really need a few more people nominating!
Yes, I can access and modify my nominations. Everything looks good.
Nominations end this Sunday!
We need more votes, especially in the "Short Game" and "Best Character" categories.
"Best Character" currently has only 2 valid nominations (i.e. only two characters got the required 5 votes). If this doesn't change, we might not do this category next year.

Yep, works fine here. All is there in more beautiful and better. Just clicked on the "Submit" button to test and all seems fine (nod)
One side question that has been answered but I forgot: What category does the puzzle enjoyment go in?
Thanks for testing!
Puzzle is now part of "Gameplay".

I will have my votes in by Saturday morning, my time. I still have a couple of games to power through.
One thing I noticed today is that I no longer seem to be able to vote for more than one Best Character from the same game. It accepts the two of them, but when I save and revisit the page, only one of them is there.

But Best Character is the most important category there is (see sig file below)
I cannot find Stormwater on the list of games to nominate. Is it perhaps automatically blocked because of the demo release the year before, called Stormwater - Early access? I don't really think it ought to be.
I remember nominating Stormwater this year so it was definitely there before, but I cannot see it now either.
The game was added on the 31st of December so perhaps something went wrong with the cutoff date/time stamp on the new page?
I've contacted
@AGA so I assume he will have a look at it soon.
Since we had a few technical issues, we will extend the nomination period a bit, so watch out for updates here.

Really sorry about this! Kastchey is right, we only used the date, which caused the cut-off date to be 31/12 00:00:00 instead of 31/12 23:59:59. Stormwater was added at 31/12 05:36
It's fixed now. It is the only game in the database added on 31/12, so no other games were affected.
That's partially on me too, something about best avoiding last minute deadlines.
Anyway, thanks guys! :)
The nomination period is extended by one week.
Nominations are now running until 9 February
This gives you one more week for playing the games. You can also head over to the MAGGIES (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=74177.new#new) thread and play last year's MAGS winners as they are also possible award nominees - two birds with one stone!
AGA and tampie85 are still working on the best character issue. We will let you know when it is fixed.
When I click on "Select an option" for "Best Non-Adventure Game" or "Best Short Game", all the games are appearing...?

This is because the game categories historically haven't been very well curated. So we made the decision to only filter a limited number of very obvious categories, like commercial / freeware.

This should work now. The nominations were stored properly, it's just the second instances were just filtered out when filling the form with stored nominations.

Congratulations! If your game was not nominated - don't be sad! Many, many more games got votes but we can only have the top 5 continue to the final voting.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to play the games, make a decision and nominate games for each category.
Thanks to
@tampie85 and
@AGA who handled the technical part of the nominations and added lots of fixes and some awesome new features for handling the awards behind the scenes. This allows me to give you a few stats:
* 40 users have nominated, this equals to 4.82% percent of users that have been active in 2024
* In total, 1034 nominations were done.
* The category with the highest average number of nominations per person is "Best Freeware Game" with 4.45, followed by "Best Game of the Year" with 4.15
Voting will start this Friday, so get playing those games you haven't, yet!
I will also set up a poll for the ceremony date, soon.
Something you may want to consider is adding the awards to the calendar at:

Congratulations to the nominees! I see that five or six games are dominant through multiple categories. It will be interesting to see if the awards will be shared among these or if one runs off with a cartload. ;-D
While I've nominated most of the ones that made it through to the final voting round, I've also given votes to some others. So to honour some more creators and games, here's a list of games I voted for (in one or more categories) that didn't make it to the finals.

Congratulations to all the nominees.
Parallel to the AGS Awards, we also have MAGGIES. For anyone who doesn't know, this is the vote for the winner-of-winners of MAGS, our monthly forum-based game jam.
Voting for MAGGIES is now OPEN, so please head to the thread, play the games (they're all fairly short) and vote for your top three:

Voting has started!
Play the games you haven't played, yet. Then go to the voting page and help decide the winners:

Voting is open until Sunday 9 March 2025 at 23:59 GMT
Again, as with nominations, only users who registered in 2024 or earlier are allowed to vote.
Voted!
I haven't finished all the games, but if I change my mind after doing so, luckily, I can change my votes.
It was a lot easier to decide here, when some of my odd favourites weren't elegible. The nominations do give an impression about which type of games have the best chances of reaching an audience.

@Ponch this comment made my day! But given the number of commercial-quality games released this year, I'm just absolutely thrilled that my other two games (MORT and Bad to the Coral) still got noticed.
A crowded field of great games is a wonderful problem to have, so I'm not complaining in the least. :-D

This year's client is open for testing! When you have a moment, download the below version, give it a try, click around, see if you can get anything to break. Linux build might need a fix, so I can reupload the Linux version later if someone needs it for testing. Let me know if you want to test with Mac, too.
Please do not use this client for the actual ceremony! There will be a new link provided on Sunday.

A bit of information for people new to the party:
We are going to have an online ceremony where the winners of the AGS Awards are revealed (a bit like the Oscars, we even have silly jokes and costume changes!)
To get the full experience, there is an interactive AGS client that will show a stage with presenters and screenshots of the games and you can be part of the audience (and may be called to stage if your game wins an award). If you can't or don't want to run this client, there is always the option of joining via IRC using the client of your choice. I will post more information about this on Sunday.
And if you can't really make it at all, you can read the results here in this thread after the ceremony is over. Usually there is also someone recording the ceremony.
I did appear on the stage when I entered.
All seems OK to me (nod)
I also remember being kicked out several times, last year. And then the .exe file disappearing.
So I had to download again, and the same thing happened.
For what I remember, it was Windows that blocked and deleted the file.
Is there a way to prevent it from happening this year? Like, having Windows accept the .exe file or something?
What I can suggest is whitelisting the file in advance in your antivirus program, or Windows Defender if you run it, so that it doesn't quarantine the file. I can make the client available for download on Saturday evening or Sunday morning, so that you have the time to set things up.
I downloaded the test client for Windows and was able to connect without issues and click around the stage and faff about with the settings. No crashes or weird bugs for me (except that I appeared on the stage for some reason instead of down in the hall/dancefloor).
One thing I noticed is that the `music_credits.txt` file doesn't seem to have been updated in several years. Since 2021, to be precise. Not sure if it even makes sense to have a list of the tracks from previous years, but the ones for this year should definitely be there. (Unless this has already been take care of for the "real" client, in which case forget I said anything!)
The client works fine for me!
Quote from: Kastchey on Fri 21/03/2025 07:12:53Let me know if you want to test with Mac, too.
I know it's a little late in the game but if you see this in time, I'd be happy to test the Mac client :)

That's a good point. Generally, the main purpose of the avatars and music credits file was to provide licensing information for the open source version of the client, which hasn't been open sourced for a good few years now. There isn't a lot of information to include since I now only ask the Best Music & Sound nominees to (optionally) provide a track, but still, an outdated credits file isn't looking great.

Quote from: TheVolumeRemote on Sat 22/03/2025 20:14:11I know it's a little late in the game but if you see this in time, I'd be happy to test the Mac client :)
Unfortunately, the latest on Mac is that we haven't been able to get the Mac version to work properly this year :( I hope you and anyone else who has a preference for a Mac client have a backup machine that can run either Win or Linux. Apologies for the inconvenience!
It seems to be working for me, but like Laura, I appeared on stage rather than down in the audience.
Yes, that's normal if you're the first person to join. No worries about that :)
I had a surprisingly difficult time getting the Windows zip extracted. No matter which link I tried or which browser I downloaded it with, I kept getting an error with the line "Error 0x8096002A: No error description available" when I tried opening or extracting the file. I have no idea what's going on, but downloading and extracting the file on my old computer (which still has Windows 7 installed) fixed the issue.\\
EDIT: soulstuff on the AGS Discord server reminded me that Windows can't open rar files without a third-party program, so that's solved the mystery.
Darn, was looking forward to attending tomorrow, unfortunately my household is Mac-only. Good luck everyone!
@vga256 You can still join via IRC client or watch a stream of the ceremony. Some people will also hang out on Discord or the other AGS IRC channels.
I can't see the characters I sent you...
I did add them to the test version, but I indeed cannot see them in the final client, so it is possible that we made the final version from the previous commit.
I'm sorry for this misalignment, but this is also why I ask everyone to send the resources early. The last 2-3 weeks prior to the ceremony are typically reserved for testing and fixes after the nominee content has been added.
I won't be able to attend due to other commitments but best of luck to all the nominees!
Sorry to hear that you won't be able to attend, RootBound! If that helps anything, you can always drop by for a moment and leave anytime you need, or join via IRC.
Last call for presenters and streamers... The ceremony starts in less than 2,5h, so if anyone can help, let me know!
And to publicly answer the question I got in a DM, yes, nominees can be presenters too, as long as you don't present a category you are nominated in.
See you there soon, everyone.
Only 1,5h left!

Does presenting require video/microphone and is it done through the client? I can likely present for a category I'm not nominated in :)
It's done via typing - you can even prepare your speech in a text editor and paste it line by line.

Thanks to everyone who made a game in 2024, played the games, nominated, voted and attended the ceremony!
Big thanks to
@Kastchey and
@Dualnames for organising and running the ceremony and to
@AGA and
@tampie85 for doing the forums/database part (and creating an awesome new tooling for the awards)
See you next year!
Congratulations to all nominees and winners!
And thanks Kastchey and Cat for the wonderful ceremony!
Congratulations to all those who won an award, the nominees, and those that had that passion to finish their game!
For the Best Demo Award, I totally got confused... first by the win and also by the fact that we were two (laugh).
So I didn't know what to do and I didn't want to encroach on Ramorama talking.
So I'll say it here:
First, congratulations to my fellow winner
@Ramorama (nod)
And :
Thank you so much for voting for my little demo.
It's a real honor! (nod)
One little quick shout-out to the Tech Forums guys:
You not only help us with our games...
You literally save our games!
So thank you for your time, kindness and patience.
Thanks to the people who made this ceremony possible.
And thank you so much, fellow AGSers for making this community what it is!
Cheers! :)
From my side I would like to, firstly, fire Stan, and secondly, thank Dualnames for running and co-hosting the ceremony, as well as all the people who helped us with the awards presentation for the same.
You guys don't even have an idea how much easier you make it for us just by presenting an award or two. Thank you <3
You did a great job with the awards. Also, congratulations to all the winners!
Holy cow, I won in both categories??
This is so amazing. Thank you so much for everyone who played and voted for MORT and Bad to the Coral. It was an honor to be nominated alongside so many professional games, and to have my hard work on both games so appreciated.
Seriously, this is awesome. Congratulations to all the other winners, thanks again so much!
Great ceremony, as always. Thanks to all the fine people who put it together and congrats to all the winners! :cheesy:

@Rik_Vargard I'm sorry again, that I talked too much on stage. I thought there was enough time for both of us to write.
I was also confused like you by the win and by the fact we both won an award for the best demo.
Next time, I try to keep myself short so other winners also have enough time.
Here again, congratulations to my fellow winner
@Rik_Vargard! :)
I'll make a post about your demo on Bluesky and social media as well!
Update: aaaaaaaand... posted! :)
@Ramorama Hey, I'm sorry if my words made you think I felt bad about anything; it wasn't my intention at all. And I didn't.
Your demo came first so you popped up on the stage and started talking, and while you were talking I got popped up on the stage, and I was in front of you while you were talking, so I moved away and again, I got totally confused. (laugh)
I could have waited and then ask "Is it my turn now?", see?
And in my head I thought that we had to move on and that I'll post my thing on the forum and voilĂ . ;)
This is just my second time at the AGS Awards and I guess this doesn't happen very often, and how do you organize something like that if we're not supposed to know we won? (laugh)
I do really appreciate your gesture to post about my demo on your socials. Must be why I got those new few visits and downloads, so thank you so much for that! (nod)
So! Let's just be grateful to all those who voted for us and enjoy the fact that you and me are the Winning Team of the 2024 AGS Demo Award!
Cheers! :)
Hmm...I don't see any games in the site's 2024 Awards list (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/play/search/&q=account-no-filter:checked;ags-award-winners:checked;year-2024:checked;newest-releases:checked) and none of the winning and nominated games are tagged on their creators' forum profiles.
