Title: 3d backgrounds vs Painted ones (Edited with screens)
Post by: Jade on Sat 02/07/2005 09:47:30
Hi,
i'm tring to make an ags game with rendered backgrounds...well...the programs i'm using is "Vue d'Esprit 4"...a good 3d scenery maker. I would like to know your opinion if this's a good idea because i've seen that mostly of the games here has painted bgrounds and they look very nice!
The resolution i'm using is 480x640(or something like that...) and i think the game size will too big...what do you think?

Ultimately, it depends on your vision of it. It's your game - if you think you should use 3D, or work better with it, go for it! There's no "right or wrong", "better or worse", only well- and poorly-executed.

A technique that has been mentioned before, which you could try if you like, would be to make the whole room in wireframe and then color it manually. I don't think I've seen that technique used before.

As for the game size, don't worry. Once you import the backgrounds, they're all the same size, be they 3D or painted. Depending on your choice of color depth, of course. But you'll find that ZIPping it will make it amazingly smaller - it compresses very well.

And why is it that you wanted to use painted backgrounds again? These 3D renders are awesome! (Unless you can draw even better ;)).

ThanksÃ,  :)...actually they are a bit edited with photoshop...but some of them are pure 3d renders.
I made about 25 rooms(some still need work on the particulars like hotspots object etc...) so far...and the game is already big...46mb!Ã,  :-\

Nevermind the size, I've got to play this! It looks very nice and intresting. But if you plan on having speech and digital music, you will need a generous host. ;P

Hey! Slightly off topic (but related, nevertheless) I've been thinking of using that same program myself, how hard or easy is it to create usable backgrounds with it?

Vue D'Esprit is a very friendly program...you dont need to be a 3d modelling expert to create beautiful backgrounds. You need only some imagination. ;)

To largo: yeah...i'm planning to use music and sound effects on my game...its the part i like the most. :)

I'd hate to be rude to Vue and its users, but might I suggest Bryce?
Vue is a great program please don't get me wrong! It's just that a lot of folks 'just' getting the 3d pre-rendered idea might want an Alternative.
I find BRYCE  to be a whole lot quicker and that could come in handy, considering the fact that the game creation process doesn't just consist of backround art. There's the programming to think about. So, using Bryce could cut down(impressively) your production time...and with a little Imagination, one could even create better Images.Once again,no offence to Vue or its users.I'm only creating awareness.Thank you.  :=

Which would you say is easier to use? I just tried Vue, but I had a lot of problems making it work with my graphics card, so it always crashes...

Well,Bryce is fairly simple and does not have a steep learning curve.Although in fairness to Vue,it doesn't have some of the new features. But still,I've been able to simulate almost every new feature there is in vue and most anyother 3d software.
I started using Bryce 2003 and here are some results if you're interested:

Let me know if you need any help getting started.

Take care Friend.

I'm fine with any kind of graphics, given they have atmosphere and fit with the characters (or the other way round), like yours.

Well done, looking forward to playing your game! :)

I really dig the graphics of the game XIII ... wich has cartoonish-3drenders!

BTW... I'm making my game pixelart, with 3dcutscenes. I'm using Wings3D, for all the modelling, and animating it with Poser.

I worked with Bryce for a long time, but it is in many ways limited, so I suggest if you go for realism, to get Vue, if you can affort it.
