What AGS games do you play?

I was curious and have been thinking. It's not a serious matter, just an interesting one :) (for me at least).

How many AGS people play the AGS games being made? Do you play all the games? Do you only play games that appeal to you? And what are the games that appeal to you? Does reviews help by those that have played it and posted them in the game thread? What type of game do you avoid? How do you select which games to play?

Anarcho

I play maybe a few a year.  I feel kinda bad about that, but I guess making games appeals to me more than playing them.

Plus, DOOM RULZZZZ!!!

Erenan

I play all games created by people whose efforts I admire and whose previous games I have enjoyed.

I also tend to play MAGS games.

I play games that appeal to me in some way. When a game is advertised, if something about the story or graphics (it's generally one of these two) catches my interest, then I'll try it out.

I also occasionally randomly download new stuff that has been released by people I'm not really familiar with. Many of these I play once and then delete. Some others hold my attention a bit longer.

I try to at least look at every new completed game to see if it's interesting to me.

The games that appeal to me are the ones where effort can be clearly seen from the description of the game alone.  A nice detailed story with fleshed-out characters and a solid plot tells me you've done your homework; respectable visuals (not necessarily great) tell me you take pride in what you do.  Following the posting rules is also an indicator that you're serious andnot just wasting my time.

I typically avoid projects with descriptions like "I made this in an hour lol" and such.

Not to say that graphics have to up to par with MI or KQ (I did download and play through PMX,) but you have to put SOME effort into it.
If your pictures look like something from my wife's 3yr old preschool class (a la Chicken, Bang Bang Your Dead,)Ã,  then I won't believe you put any more effort into the story, puzzles, or gameplay (especially if you can't even spell the name of YOU'RE game correctly.)

Also, I don't play horror games, not that I can't handle the gore or that I'm easily frightened, I just don't like the premise.

If I download a game to play it, the puzzles and story have to be logical and keep me involved.Ã,  I don't have a problem looking for hints if a puzzle is especially challenging, but if I say to myself, "Why the crap would I do that?" when I read the solution, then it usually doesn't waste my valuable hard drive space too much longer.
"Why didn't I think of that?" and "Wow, that was very clever!" responses, and I'll keep playing.

If I find something particularly interesting, then I'll look for another game by the same author.Ã,  Otherwise, I'm looking for anything that catches my attention.

I always check all the games in the "In Production" and "Completed Games" forums, but I see a lot more I'm interested in in the IP page than the CG page.

EDIT: I know I used YOU'RE incorrectly.

Nikolas

The last game I played was:

I need a wheee....

How lame of me...

I generally play large games (since I have broadband), and can afford to download them, because it means better grahpics, and mainly more and better music. Not that mOds midis are bad. No way! But for me entertainment was the ending sequence of The Prodigal with the video and the music by the Shadowplay! And the rest of the game was very well made.

I do pay attnetion to graphics and audio. I have to say that I do. But I'm not judgemental and don't care about low resolution or anything like that really. And of corse I care for the good game play and good story, but these usually can only find out after you have started playing the game :-/

Nostradamus

Back in 2001-2002 I used to download every released game and play it.
If a game looks half-descent I'll give it a shot, but now I don't download games that are PeNiS award material, or games that look like no effort have been made on them on any field. And sadly there have been a lot of those this year.

I think when you're a fresh member you download and play every game that is released. Members are very productive; at least 2 games are released a week. However, the majority is crappy.
I tried to played every release, but now I only play the good ones. I spot them by looking at graphics. If the graphics are good, then the maker cares more about the game and puts in extra effort, methink.

I agree with that point of view!

Jessica Plunkenstein is a game with rubbish graphics that has an excellent story, voice acting and dialogue.

Louigi Verona

yes, but generally what jet said is true. Generally.

Drowps

I play award winners, anything by Yahtzee and Ben Jordan.

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

I'm playing, alphabetically, ALL the AGS games I have in my hard drive, including the newer ones and OROW ones and MAGS ones. I have most games made with AGS, excepting the really, really, really old ones that no one knows where to get anymore. I'm down to "C". Whee!
Reach for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

Kneel. Now.

Never throw chicken at a Leprechaun.

Nikolas

I would expect that from you Rui! :D hehe...

you're exceptional! :)

Dan_N

Good luck with that, Rui.

I tend to play all those horror ones (5DAS, 7DAS, Notes, Pleurghburg, Lost in the Nightmare, Notes, etc.).
Also ALL the games made by Yahtzee with AGS I've played. Even his first RON game. He's just THAT good.
Also, full length games, although I can't seem to find any that are really worth playing. The Uncertainty Machine runs to slowly on my computer (bitch bitch) and outside of Pleurghburg I couldn't find any really GOOD ones. Damn!

Radiant

I've looked over the main games list once or twice and picked out a bunch (esp. if they have creative descriptions, like SnailQuest or ATZ), but generally since the list is so huge I only play games that people recommend to me. So far that has included Apprentice, Larry Vales, RLBAT, 5DAS/1DAM, Cirque du Zale, anything in a MAGS that I was involved in, and possibly some others that I forgot at the moment.

I've heard quite a bunch of suggestions over at Mittens (and have probably forgotten half of them already :) ) but haven't had the time to play those yet except for the Trilby game. Speaking of which -- Helm, where do I find DreamWeb again?

Louigi makes an interesting point... I know there are a few games with poor graphics that are still interesting to play (those would be tricky to find, except by word-of-mouth) - but are there any games with good graphics that are actually boring or badly designed?
In other words, how far can you judge a game by its cover?

nihilyst

I usually play all the games that are released. But I don't complete most of them.

m0ds

I keep an eye on the completed games forum, so that I know what people are talking about at Mittens and at other times. If a game is particularly hyped up, or looks pretty damn good - then I'll download it and play it. I get stuck quite easily on most games though, so I've seen very few AGS games through to the end. More recently I've been playing through some of the releases, and sometimes I like to play the smaller games. I kind of feel bad about not playing so many games, but I really don't get much time these days. I may have more time from now on though, we'll see :)

Tuomas

I usually play a game if people say it's good. Does that make me a mainstream follower or not, I don't care. That or then I go to the thread and play some games that appeal to me in a good sense. As people say, once you present your game it should have something to say for itself. Just to make it interesting. Oh, and good graphics usually catch my eye.
