I just had a question and I wasn't sure who to ask about it. I am currently making my first game right now. I can't draw, so I am using some drag and drop cartoon dolls as my characters. I was wondering if I gave the sites credit in the credits at the end of the game from which I got the pieces to put together the characters, is it okay if I use them in my game or do I actually have to draw my characters? I'm about 40% done my game and it would be really sucky to start over again!
It's nice to ask the creators, but you probably won't be selling the game, nor would the game get back to the artist creators, but you should definitly credit the artists at the end of the game.
It's just a learning experience game, so it should be no problem.
Being artisticly challenged myself, I looked at various cartoon-y/doll sites for characters at one point, and they mostly have something somewhere that tells you what you are/aren't allowed to do with their stuff - usually a variation on "You can use it, provided it's not for profit, and you give credit where it's due". Go back to the sites, if you still know them, and check for yourself, though.
As Scummbuddy said though, it really shouldn't be a problem.
I don't really see why you would have to do it all again - as you describe it - just because you added new characters.
One option would be to simply ask around the community (like in the designated thread in this forum) for a sprite artist. It's always better to have your own stuff than borrowing from strangers. Then again, there won't be any legal problems with this, which has already been stated twice in this thread.
