Title: A WW2 adventure....
Post by: earlwood on Mon 04/08/2003 03:24:29
I allways wanted to make a WW2 adventure game...but how exactly could I do that without making it an adventure? If you have any ideas please they will greatly appreciated.

Wah? Aren't adventure games supposed to be, to some degree, an adventure?

LOL! sorry about that, I meant an action type game : P. I don't want it to be a total action shoot em' up.

Well, do some reasearch on espionage in WW2. I'm sure you could get some good ideas out of that.

Well..."WW2 Adventure" is a rather large topic.

Do you want it to be about the war specifically, people affected by the war, people fighting in the war?

Trap's espionage idea would certainly play into the adventure game genre very well.

I know that some time ago someone started a thread on the morals of making a game about WW2 and Jews. I think this could be done rather easily and it would make an excellent adventure game. Escaping from a ghetto and finding your way to America game. BUT, it would have to be treated VERY carefully. Some people, including me, are very easily offended by fiction stories about the holocaust. In my eyes there are enough REAL stories that still need to be told...it is the one place that I feel fiction is ALMOST unneccesary. I do however feel that fiction, if done properly, can still educate people.

I would recommend perhaps finding some memoirs of soldiers if would like to do it from that point of view. Don't forget that stories about POW's would need to be treated with the same delicacy as the holocaust.

Personally I think espionage is probably the easiest and "least likely to offend"-way to do things. Then again, it is your game and you can do whatever you want :P.

I think you should narrow your question a little more...then perhaps we could help out with advice more.

What about a war comedy?

There are various war comedies around, like Richard Hooker's MASH, Joseph Heller's Catch-22, The film Three Kings, Larry Beinhart's American Hero, Blackadder Goes Forth, etc, etc

I loved catch-22. I just read it...and it was the only book that I have read for school so far that I enjoyed.

I think a adventure game along those lines would be pretty entertaining

Catch 22 isn't a comedy. It's a stunning indictment of American miltary establishment. Or something.

AGA's right. And the Three Kings is definately not a war-comedy either.

I dont know. there are many parts of catch-22 that are certainly comedic. the entire section major major major major for example...or the fact that the military refused to remove the dead man's stuff from the tent, (mocking american military beucracy) are examples of this.

however, lets not drive this thread off topic...its about a fellow wanting to make a WWII game. lets not fill it with posts about the literary qualities of catch-22.

Espionage! thats a great idea, trap! I think that and a POW story is just about the only way to do a WW2 adventure, but  the POW has been too many times...I'll get on the story right away(and I'll take a look at this catch-22 thing too)..WOOT!
