Title: Adventure Game Insanity
Post by: Sam. on Thu 24/02/2005 16:52:34
have realised that adventure games drive you mad. I was recently playing Full throtle and needed to open the chest in mos room. I got stuck so i left it for  a bit. I forgot all about it. I was working in my garage when i saw a crowbar. now, this is absolute truth. i oicked up the crowbar, took it up to my room. only THEN realising that it wasn't real life. fortunatley i was home alone, so nobody could mock me. You can all mock me here beacuse, in my mind, you are not real people as you live on the internet. Anybody else done anything crazy whilst playing an adventure game?

Well, there is something known as "Myst Madness" (because I just made it up).
It's a syndrome where the afflicted person runs around in their house, turning light switches on and off in every combination to see if anything happens.

There's also KQuilabriumalimic-syndrom

I got this while dying for the 400th time playing Kings Quest  :-\

Heheh...happened to me as well. I want to pick something up, so I move the mouse cursor over the object. Then I realise that this is real life.

I don't really get this with adventure games, but I get a very bad case of it with two other games. Jet Set Radio - basically a rollerblading game where you "grind" all sorts of objects and places. After playing it for a little while, I'll be out in the real world and I can't stop myself seeing all sorts of places to grind, like chimney stacks with spiralling metal twirling down them.

More recently, I've been playing a fabulous game called Katamari Damashii, where you're basically rolling a ball around on top of every conceivable object and picking them all up to make an even bigger ball. It's AWESOME, I can't recommend enough playing this game. Anyway, after playing that for awhile, I just find myself looking at EVERYTHING and imagine rolling it up, and how bits of things would seperate...

Heh. Nothing so drastic as your experience, Zooty, but after playing Gabe Knight 3 or System Shock 2 I often look at the world in dirrefent, "3D" terms. I am more aware of what makes stuff 3D.

Oh, and then there are the times when I wonder about saving my game and then doing stuff like kissing a girl, or jumping in front of a plane, or something similarly stupid. Not to mention the times I think, "what should I do now? USE it, PICK IT UP, or something else?" And not to mention the amount of times while in a dialog the possible responses seem to line up like in adventure games. ALso, don't forget how aware I am of the items in my pocket, and...

...

...I'm sicker than I thought. Good God!

Katamari Damashii Rocks!  No game out there like it.  Can't wait for the sequel.

On topic (though not an adventure game):  I've had dreams where there are these arrows, and they tell me how I should move my feet, and I can't stop or I'll die.

Then I woke up and realized I needed to quit playing Dance Dance Revolution.

I've done the SAVE thing before... You know, consciously thought I should save my game.

Also, another big thing with me is constructing things. For example, if something falls behind my desk or something, instead of lifting my desk, I'll construct a grabber thingie out of stuff lying around my room to get the object.

And I usually always have my backpack on me whenever I leave the house, even if I don't need it. Because I never know what kind of things I might need to pick up and put in my inventory.

Apparently I'm even worse at handwriting than I am at typing.

I knew I had the Adventure Disease when I looked at a lampost, and thought "I bet I could use my whip on that, and swing onto that roof."

Whenever play a PC game, or watch an iPod comercial, I can't rest until I can work out how one would implement something like that in AGS.

I were addicted to the sims a day or two, and when I went to the toilet, I were thinking that my "Toilet" bar got green. Same thing when I ate. Crazy.

Oh, I had the Sims Insanity really badly last summer. I became hyper organized- "I will wake up, eat, clean, bathe, go to work, come home,   eat, have fun, and sleep"

And I'm really bad about collecting an "inventory." I buy coats with lots of large pockets and carry around everything you could ever want. I'll have gum, cough candies, bandaids, notebooks, pens, hair brushes, medication, keys, wallets (I had two in my pockets for the longest time), loose change, a bottle opener, paperback novels, scripts, and on and on all stuffed into my pockets I might not need a certain item right NOW, but who knows when I might need it in the future?

And I've combined the keys, the wallet and the bottle opener into one item, as well. Oh dear.

By the by, where did that "You know you've played too many adventure games when..." list go?

Oddly, iI've never had this with adventure games. I HAVE had repeated stressful dreams about stacking pills in Dr. Mario, though, and I've looked at real-wrold objects thinking "I could SO grind that" after I played too much Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.

On the other hand, I am a voracious packrat, and maybe adventure games are to blame.

Amazing. Just today I was pressing the "open door" button on the train and I thought to myself, "I suppose I should make a check in rep_execute to see whether the train is moving AND the buyttons is pressed, and then check to see if thge door is open"... and I went on for about 15 seconds more before I realized this wasn't AGS.

Actually, I had a dream the other night where I was both IN an RPG and creating it in AGS at the same time, walking around and finding things I need to fix, better story elements... Id been working solidly on my RPG for days at that stage. Last night, I had another dream that I had finished my game, and was getting people to beta test for me while I went on some wild adventure.

I also have the thing where I try to work out how actions/movies/ads can be done in AGS. All the time, actually @_@

Amen, brother! And all that rot. I too am guilty. o.o

When I was little, I collected EVERYTHING. And I mean everything. If it was loose, I would take it, and use it. For example, instead of merely taking something from the other side of the table, I would rig up a net/lasso to catch it. Keys still in the door? A grappling hook'll take care of that! And why use the door when you can lever open a window instead? I still have that same urge sometimes. I hate easy.

Also, when I'm doing stuff, I have an inner status line which I murmur.
"Pick up soldering iron."
"Use soldering iron on circuit board"
"Go to tap."
"Run hand under water."

Man. I'm so messed up. And I still carry around useless items.

Oh, and one last thing. If something you are considering is totally futile or stupid, do you say to yourself: "That doesn't work." out loud?

Not to mention my undying urge to climb to lofty and dangerous places JUST because there's a tiny glint, and a mental tag saying: "Shiny"!

And making a 'Magic Map' in my head so I can go to places I've already been quickly!

And thinking I have to get an obscure item for someone every time I ask them a favour.

And keeping all chainsaws out of gas.
It's all true. All of it.

I sometimes suffer from Advinsanity.

Worst case wasn't related to adventure games though, but to Max Payne 2. I had been playing it for hours in one go, with cinema-mod (more bullet-time +100% more awesome in other ways). Try guessing how I was moving for the next hour after I stopped playing.

I've also been known to bunny-hop and side-strafe in public.

Well, this isn't Adventure Game related, but eh, it's not completely off topic.

After playing Grand Theft Auto games, I tend to have strange urges to smash into cop cars and pedestrians whenever I see them.  Luckily, I don't drive.

I've never had this happen with an adventure game. But almost 100% of the time after I read a good book. I'll find myself playing the narrator in my head as I go about my day.

Kind of strange he thought as he pressed the Post button.

Adventure game? Nope.

But who else has created a new map for Duke Nukem 3D in his dream while sleeping? And more complex map that I could ever make, though I have some skills at this.

Oh hell, it was so clear. Just as I would've really used Build level editor.

I remember waking up and looking at the walls in my room. And wondering how could Duke have such a texture for walls, before realizing that I'm in reality now.

Em, this happened, when I was away from computer for 2 weeks.

And once I got pretty great at Wallies (ollies off the walls), I started looking at large vertical surfaces thinking: man -- I bet I could Wallie  up that and THEN grind that ledge.

Thnakfully, I can't even stand on a skateboard, otherwise, I'm sure I'd either be in the X Games or dead.... Yeah, probably dead.

This is not so much with adventure games, but more with the Windows environment.

Every time I stuff something up, I think of the "undo" button.

I reckon it's the greatest thing since Monkey Island.

It's kinda sad though... there actually is a save button in my life... hovering above me... always... Sometimes I try to press it, but it's too far away.  So all you adventure game makers better make the save button reachable by the main character, dammit!  There's also  a quit button, but I desperately hope no one knows about it.

Yeah had the tony hawk syndrome, maybe still have it and much too my surprise I havent broken anything.
I can hear the Ka chin sound effect when i do something really clever or witty :)
And then again I pretty much live the point and click life style.
I dont like the save button cause sometimes things just need to done right from the begining ;)
Last but not least, that undo thing doesnt sound so bad cause man oh man ill undo all those sleeping
late mornings!
