Title: Adventure game interfaces: Research!
Post by: on Mon 08/05/2006 19:19:21
Hi there.

I hope this is not too forward of me, posting this here... but, as an avid adventure gamer curious about the thoughts of fellow adventure gamers, I thought I'd give it a go!

I'm doing an Honours research paper on adventure game interfaces and I've set up a questionnaire for comparing the interfaces of the demos of "The Curse of Monkey Island" and "Escape from Monkey Island".

It would be great if some of you here would answer that questionnaire for me; if you're interested, you'll find it at http://mm.up.ac.za/Questionnaire.zip (it's an 180 MB ZIP file including both demos and the questionnaire). If you already have the demos / full games, you can get the questionnaire by itself from http://mm.up.ac.za/Questionnaire.pdf.

UPDATE: Please put your answers in a text document (using MS Word or Notepad, for example) and then e-mail it to me using the address provided at the bottom of the questionnaire.

Thanks in advance, and I really hope my research can do something worthwhile for the adventure gaming community!  ;D

Are we supposed to post our answers here or mail them to you?

Ah, yes, I forgot to mention that...

Please put the answers in a text document (using MS Word or Notepad, for example) and then mail it to the e-mail address provided at the bottom of the questionnaire.

Thanks for the interest!

I'd be happy to help but am not going to download 180 megs for it. Why not post a screenshot or two and describe the interfaces? IIRC one has a simple verbcoin (which is ok as long as it has keyboard shortcuts, and extremely annoying otherwise) and the other has the weird 3-d walking interface that I found awkward and inappropriate for an adventure game. Imho and ymmv, of course.

I don't think the two Interfaces you chose are the best examples of Adventure game interfaces. Many didn't like the Verb coin, and the EMI "interface" is almost too much like non adventure interfaces. I don't think you are studying adventure games at there best. look instead at classic Scumm (monkey Island2 Fate of Atlantis) and Sierra's Kings quest are two good ones to study. but it is your work, these are suggestions only.
