Underrated! (a thread on unacknowledged talent)

Nikolas

I wouldn't say that wretched and Mordalles are underated... They are just not active (anymore) in the AGS forums. But their games have 1000s of downloads, each one, and each game has been praised to no end, unless mistaken. Mordy has come a long long way since Mordy 1, to Mordy 2, duty and beyond, and I *think* he is preparing something else. Wretched games have always been a favourite which get 20+ pages in the hints and tips. He just stoped producing AGS games, some time ago.

I'd say the same thing about Kinoko, the person who brought me here! She made cirque de Zale, famous game, I imagine, in it's own right, but she's no longer active in these forums, so very few people remember her. And cirque is quite an old game made in 2004, or 2005, so many many games have been produced ever since.

So here's to Kinoko from me! :) (and to spam it further: kinokofry.com ! Visit it, you'll love it! ;D)

Buckethead

I think SSH and leon are unrated.

SSH:

has written more modules then I can imagian I would need. And he's always there with some clever codes when needed. He updates his blog nearly each day (if not each day) with nice and usefull content and takes time for everyone. Has taken care of picks of the month since I can remember.

Leon:

Does lovely reviews! Makes walkthroughs of games in no time!  :D

And a link to prove it! :)

Thanks GG, this got more traffic to my blog than it's had for ages...!  ;D

And I think I sing myself quite enough to prevent me from being unsung, but thanks for the mention, Bucket!

I love your modules too Andrew, and your blog... despite the rather bitter comment about DITR.  ::)

Um, Ghormak and Gilbert for all their great contributions.   And let's not forget the Golden Greek Period:  Butcher, Helm, Spyros and then that other guy with the long hair.    And the early Abstract Period:  Scid, Las Naranjas, and Capt. Mostly

Also:

Dark Stalkey, Cornjob, Ionias, Rodekill, [eric], Phil, Chrille, 2ma2, Grundislav, and yahtzee may not ALL be underrated but they don't get nearly enough credit for drawing so many users to AGS.  Also, Roy Lazarovich.  Night of the Hermit was one of the most newcomer bringing games for many many months.

Even Visy deserves a mention for Lassi Quest.   Just showing everyone that a game COULD be made had a major impact.

Has anyone mentioned Mods? He's made music for like every fifth or so game out there.

And really, most names in this thread are simply people you think rock, making this just another buddy-thread...
Yes, I'm just grumpy I haven't been mentioned :P

And they deserve recognition for what, exactly? Appallingly bad games? Using paint like an armless monkey? Being "funny"? Chronology?

I wouldn't rate them at all.

When I was a little kid we had a sand box. It was a quicksand box. I was an only child... eventually.

Thanks Andail! Two nominations in the last AGS awards was a very warming recognition for me :) It's sometimes hard to recognise people who work behind the scenes well & I guess in a forum/community kind of way we're all a bit wary these days as to how new people percieve it, but I think you've helped shaped the community in a fantastic way throughout the years.

And how could we forget the Mittolympics? :D Eric the same, but that's more moderater related, and all the moderaters do fantastic stuff! And then there's the invisible people like AGA. Does he post anywhere? I'm sure this place isn't that big!!! :P strazer, Darth & Ashen do fantastic jobs too, despite him being inactive... And of course teh Gilbot 30000 Cheungbot, who's been here forever, and seems most faithful (& helpful) - but quiet!

Then there's CJ. I remember when every fifth thread was a praise CJ thread...you just don't see enough of them anymore ;) CJ has gained good recognition but no reason not to say so yet again, yay CJ!

As for developers & people just being creative I think its hard to not just say everyone :p I guess its a bit buddyish but I would say Phil Reed, Helm, Rodey, Chrille, Spyros, Linus...they were all very prominent people in the early days of AGS being recognised. Pessi too, and the recent mutant monkey thread serves as nice recognition of him! I even found a sketch of the monkey earlier today and the "brain" driving out of the door lol...hmm! Ghormak & Scid too, and earlier developers like Kandyman, MillsJRoss, Mike Doak, Abstauber & especially Andrey Biglari, who gave me a lot of motivation & excitement about the prospects of the AGS engine. Also the expressionists like Las Naranjas & Captain Mostly... mentalists actually :P There are a lot of other people from this community that I respect and would choose to recognise, but I don't think anyone else here would follow, they did not accomplish a great output - but they had the motivation which I think should always be recognised too. People like Rich Thurlow, Gravity, Da j3zzo (dekker), Joey Diperla and Scott he's your buddy Scummbuddy.

Lately some of the people I think are unrecognised are the people determined to have a great output & put a lot into each thing they...put out. Dualnames, Akatosh, ProgzMax, Snake & Ponch. These guys persist! I think every game made by a new developer here or someone with one or two on their list should deserve more recognition, but there's so many to name at that point!!!! I think the AGS ladies should be well recognised too, Marion is achieving great things as is The Ivy & is was Kinoko...so did Yufster at one point. But they get Yahtzee style recognition simply because they're female ::) That's the...innuhhnet. I think Gayry Magintz is underated too but he still hasn't done anything with AGS since Mittens Sweden I'm sure :P I think most of the AGS musicians are underrated too. Scorposer & Petteri are masters of MIDI and Nikolas is a walking ogg! But scorpy does not get that much recognition...but should do once Day of the Jackass 2 is out!

Anyway I hate these kind of threads cos when I say one name I want to say a million more! And then emo types get all worried that their name hasn't been mentioned :P And I feel bad for not saying everyone's name, so I'm gonna leave it there! LOL.

Could you add that to the thread?

m0ds

Not yet very easily, I'm afraid :( But it's on my todo list!

Thanks, I found my donation dossier btw when looking for Mutant Monkey stuff, when do I get my new one? :D

m0ds

Hahaha!! Cool! Um....  ???

All donators will recieve a copy of the demo on CD sometime this year, so you have that to look forward too ;)

Nikolas is a walking ogg!

Well, we're talking about the underrated, and I hope for the sake of God that no one thinks that Nikolas is underrated. Let me remind you that he hasn't been on a game that hasn't been a total ags award buster. Check his profile. Good men talk, great men just leave talking to others.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

HENCE exactly why they are underrated!

I think some of the female game makers are underrated... some people may think that their games are popular just because of the "OMG! Girl!" factor, but actually Cirque, Spooks and Nanobots are great games.

Stupot

I found Fovmester's Frank the Farmhand and it's sequel to be charming and enjoyable.  The first one caused a bit of a stir over the R word, but they were well designed and colourful and if I remember rightly, the music was pretty good too.

And considering he done it all himself... twice... perhaps these games deserve a bit more recognition.

It's true that Captain Mostly made many crap games (don't know about LasNaranjas...), but he also made two good ones, namely both entries in the Vegetable Patch Extreem Turbo series.
Sadly, the second part isn't very well balanced and is often more frustrating than fun. But it sure is very unique.

It's interesting: while RLatBtAT is very much crap (despite some nice ideas) and still has a cult following in this forum, the VPET series is much better but went by nearly unnoticed.

So my nomination for underrated talent is the "late" Captain Mostly.
