Title: Adventure game without dialogue
Post by: Mehrdad on Fri 15/09/2017 12:39:53
Hi

Is any chance for success an adventure point and click game without dialogue or any word ? Do you know any famous games or ever AGS games ?

I guess it depends on exactly what you mean "without dialogue" - would you count pictorial representations as not being dialogue, or just a different form of dialogue?  If you're not interpreting that point too strictly I guess "Machinarium" is a very good example of a game telling a story without using words.  There was a game based on Hamlet that I think had no dialogue too.  If Machinarium meets your criteria then it is definitely a good example of it being possible.

Strange that you should mention this in the week I have decided to try something along these lines! :-D

As for AGS games specifically... none spring to my mind straight away, maybe someone else will remember one?

Good point for Machinarium . But this game didn't tell any story .It's similar a puzzle game .There is many animations that haven't any word like "The Red Turtle" . This animation is 80 minute without any word :

Is any example adventure point and click game with great story ?

One of Ben304's games was dialogue-less, wasn't it?

Also from what I hear in Dropsy you only speak in images, though I'm not sure that's true of other characters in the game as well.

I'm pretty sure there are quite a lot if you go looking...

Anyone else getting a malware notification on this thread? I believe it's to do with the hosting Mehrdad uses, persiangig.com?

Also thanks for the reminder to watch The Red Turtle :)

It's weird that you mention Machinarium but not the biggest game from Amanita Design. The Samorost series doesn't have any dialog, not even words in the menu and has been around for quite a while!
I recommended looking that one up as well ;)

Samorost
Spoiler
I wouldn't call the Samorost games adventures. They are more like hidden object games, or "find the right sequence of clicks to finish off this screen". I just played 3 a couple of days ago and gave up on it, totally annoying, that one.

Samorost 3 is a bit too complex to work without words, sadly.

Thanks guys for intro. Yes I agree Samorost is similar to hidden object .I now remember to Neverhood game . But that hadn't real story and had some sound speech too.  I'm looking for an classic adventure 3rd person with great story only with image as dialogue less or any word.

I don't think that exist. Great story and words simply go together. Without words, the story is only as good as the person interpreting the images. And even then you can only provide basic actions that lacks the intricate storytelling what usually makes a story so wonderful.

Sure enough you can have a story only told by images and music, but it'll never be truly great.

The first game that comes to mind for me is Fire by Daedalic Entertainment.
I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

I hate this game so much. Anyway, on topic, the Rusty Lake games. They could fall under Hidden Object, though.

They're room escape games rather than hidden object games. But yeah they are brilliant. And a good example of adventures with no dialogue (I class escape games as adventures).

I was just about to suggest that one myself :D

Also: the games "Limbo" and "Inside" have no dialog. Debatable I guess if they are "adventure games" or not but the puzzle-solving aspects make the comparison viable I feel.

Platformers. Video game genres do have weird names.

Thanks a lot for share link games .I'm wonder that more than 90% of them are in comedy genre.

Thanks for mention of "Limbo" and "Inside" . I add "Another world" to this list too. As there is not any word in this three games. Honestly , this games is more than a platformer . If we choose "Cinematic platformer" for them so we have to add "Blackthorn" to this list as "Blackthorn" haven't any story as "Another world" have it.

"Another world" tell to us a real easy story with cut scenes and so on. I agree that it have actions and player dead into the games  . But in my opinion it's not a platformer game. And inevitably we must stick adventure genre to it too.
But there is a important question : What is degree of immersion "Another world" in tell story in compare with classic point and click games ?

I'd also put "Limbo" and "Inside" up for this same kind of examination. If personally feel that both games are set against a background with a rich, complete story being told but, as all the exposition is visual, and revealed little by little, the story itself is open to a lot of interpretation by the player. I felt I mostly understood the story of "Inside" but could only really guess at "Limbo". And then the author of the game(s) sometimes reveals the full story later, but this does not qualify as a part of the no-dialog experience. SOme would say this is lazy storytelling while others would say they enjoy this kind of story more, or at least enjoy it sometimes as an alternative to having the entire story explained to them. I probably fall into the latter category where I do enjoy this kind of experience now and then, and if it is done well, but wouldn't want it every time I play a game.

Yes I agree, "Inside" had great story . I remember when it finished I stared to monitor for a few minutes without any reaction . It hadn't any music even . There is many different explicate for end of this game by peoples in forums.

Gobliiins series (by Coktel Vision), while they do have some text, hardly need any. Everything is expressed by faces and motion anyway.
