A good thing (in my opinion) is to start with the originals..  The classics..  Police Quest, Kings Quest, etc.  The old Sierra games.  People have done remakes of a few King's Quest games, a few Space Quest games and Quest For Glory 2.

play Loom if you can get it. It isn't "easy" per se, but the "puzzles" are pretty....understandable.

I recommend playing any AGS game that has won an award.  It usually means they are of good quality and worthwhile to play.
Unfortunately there are good games that haven't won any AGS awards, for those you'll have find by searching by blue cup rating (which are kindly generated by the review panel--thanks guys!).

If you got through Damsel, you're on the right track.  :D

Just keep going. Don't give up.  If needed ask for a hint at a forum (the hints and tips here or just drop a post on my site (http://gamequestions.efzeven.nl/index.php) or look at a walkthrough (less preferred because of the spoilers). After a while you'll learn to think like the game maker and play with that in mind. Puzzles will become easier because you'll know what was meant by the author and nothing seems strange anymore.

Other than that, be creative, think outside the box and try everything: it's an adventure!

Try to start with the short ones. Take the ones from Ben304 for instance. Pretty short and the puzzles are always logical. Nothing farfetched or bizarre.

For brainteasers and -trainers it's a bit different. You see it or you don't. But again, practice a lot. Do braintraining and learn from the answers and mistakes. And before you know it, you play the games by yourself and without any help.

My first adventure was Leisure Suit Larry, about 25 years ago (yep, I'm that old and have been playing that long..  :-\) I couldn't solve it and internet wasn't around (the way it is today). So you just asked around and played together with friends to see what they could come up with. Or once in a while called into a BBS (Bulletin Board System for the youngsters ) to see if you could find answers there. That's easier nowadays.

The biggest problem is getting the right amount of information. You just want a hint without the full answer to be able to solve the puzzle yourself, but just a little push in the right direction. And that's why these forums are great! Just tell them what game you're playing, where you're stuck and how much info you'd like.

Is there a specific genre you prefer or is anything good, as long as it's an adventure?

Yeah, Leon's right about Ben304's games )

Take this game. It's cool and simple:

Loom is easily the easiest of them all. Then I'd say Monkey Island 1 and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, both features puzzles that are fairly logical and not too fiendish. Day Of The Tentacle is a good choice too, puzzles not too easy, but not too hard, zanny puzzles yet puzzles that make sense in this Chuck Jones-esque universe.

After these games you will be ready to tackle harder titles like Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island 2 and 3, Flight Of The Amazon Queen, Beneath A Steel Sky and Broken Sword. Maybe some of the Sierra's titles as long you remember Al Lowe's advice: Save early, save often (and not only on the same save slot!)

I think Ryan Timothy made a nice suggestion in this thread. (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=39479.msg520132#msg520132)
