Title: Ags awards 2009 - For Your Consideration
Post by: on Sun 10/01/2010 15:24:18
The nomination phase of the AGS Awards 2009 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=39829.msg524343#new) is currently under way.
If you made a game in 2009 and want people to nominate and vote it, post a bit of information and a screenshot here, along with plausible categories where to nominate your game (here's a list of the categories for the AGS awards 2009 (http://www.americangirlscouts.org/agswiki/AGS_Awards_2009) and an good example (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=28928.msg378349#msg378349) of a Fyc post).
If the author isn't there to do it and you think her game deserves a mention, you are encouraged to do it yourself.

To all:
Have a look at these posts to see if there are any games that you have missed, and give'em a try!
When you're ready, go there (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/Newsite/Awards.aspx/Nominate) to nominate!

The following demo is for a largely experimental adventure game still in-the-making. One of its main purposes was to get a reactions from a larger number of players so I can keep improving the whole game based on them. I hope its nevertheless fun to play and the cliff-hanger at the end makes you want to see what's going to happen next.

FRANTIC FRANKO DEMOOO-O-O

Go on then..

For your consideration my friends!

The McCarthy Chronicles: Episode 1

The game was largely an exercise in really getting to grips with the AGS engine (in preperation for the big project) so it's not perfect but may i humbley suggest it for the following catagories.

Best Original Story - Having never written an adventure game before I battled with gameplay/story elements for a while. I think its clear I really chose story far more often than I should but at least the story is there!

Best Dialogue Writing - I think the dialogue in McCarthy is certainly a strong point. Although I may have let narrative voice slip a little with certain characters, other characters really shine through (Victoria for instance)

Best Short Game - Well if there's a catagory for it i might as well put myself up for it...

Best Player Character - I consider McCarthy to be something of an 'Anti-Trilby'. McCarthy is self-deprecating and meek with very little confidence in his abilities. Its difficult to judge his progresion from the first episode but I think he'd like some recognition for his efforts.

Best Animation - Mordalles' work on McCarthy was stunning and I think he should be rewarded for that.

Best Sound Effects -  As a sound engineer I tried my best to make the sound effects 'fit' in with the atmosphere. Whether i succeeded or not is debateable.

Best Voice Work  - I consider my cast to be one of the best ever seen in an AGS game. They did excellently despite my poor attempts at direction  ;D. Tabitha's and James' actors gave stand out performances.

Best Programming in an Adventure - Technical excellence was a goal from the start. There are very little game play dynamics which required any advanced coding but some of the graphical effects were quite complex (mainly the puddles)

Thank you for your time, may the best game win.

First of all: Thanks Bicilotti for hosting the competition!

So far, I see lots of very nice, short nominees. But didn't we have any longer game worth an award?

What about Cold Meat  (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1210), the adventure of lazy, Heavy Metal and Fastfood-loving Pete, who has to deal with zombies that beset the new fastfood restaurant in his town?

It's sure not the best looking game but one of the longest in 2009 (if not the longest- correct me if I'm wrong) and has lots of qualitites:

Quote from: kaputtnik on Sun 04/10/2009 20:20:23
I seriously recommend everybody who fancies some full length amateur adventure puzzle solving to give this a try, you won't be disappointed, I guarantee you. And I will furthermore fortify this with a short list of things that make this game worth YOUR time:

- good characters!
- good music!
- good puzzles!
- good font!
- good length!
- okay graphics!

See? It's good!

So, I nominate it for the categories:
Best Game Created with AGS
Best Gameplay
Best Puzzles

For Your Consideration, I propose two of my games this year for the 2009 Awards.

For category of Best Music I suggest my MAGS entry Mr. Danger's Contest.  All music (and sounds) were made a capella by myself on my trusty PC microphone.  I got some great feedback from it (and some not-so-great).  It was a very different type of music :)

My other game recommendation for nomination comes from Murran Chronicles 2: Talons of Terror.  While the graphics were a bit lackluster all the feedback I received on story, writing and puzzles were great.  So I submit Murran Chronicles 2 for :

Best Original Story
Best Dialogue Writing
Best Puzzles
Best Short Game

Thanks!

Categories:
Best Gameplay & Best Innovation- for the innovative investigation mode.
Best Music- All original compositions.
Best Original Story- For mystery lovers.
Best Non-Player Character- All characters in the game were well rounded individuals with distinct personalities.
Best Dialogue Writing- Dialogues derived from the NPCs personalities.

And thank you for considering...

Well, I actually released a game this year! And I'm damn proud of that! So I'm nominating it! For your consideration!

The hunt for Goldbeard

(Thanks Leon for posting a walkthrough btw :))

Here's what I am nominating it for:

I've heard some negative comments on the puzzles, and I believe there's a bug I haven't gotten around to fixing. So ignore that and focus on the topics I'm nominating the game for.

Vote for me and you shall have cake!

I don't know if commercial releases participate... but the game's free demo can be found in AGS database and quite a few of you here have bought and played Downfall too. So please consider it for nomination in following categories:

-Best Gameplay
-Best Original Story
-Best Non-Player Character (I'm really proud of Agnes...)
-Best Background Art
-Best Music

And what are the possible strengths of this game?

Well I thought I might as well get on the band wagon...

Danny Dread is On Call

-Best Non-player Character  (For Noname the Clown)
-Best Music
-Best Animation
-Best Short Game

Why do I think it deserves these possible honours?  Well, I just plain like the Clown.  The music is awesome, thanks again to Mods for his contribution, syncing in with the cutscenes.  And finally the animations, while small in size this game boasts an impresive 50 or so animations (I admit I can't remember exactly how many).

Why not adding some more short games (besides I haven't finished anything else last year) ;D
So please consider

AeroNuts

If you haven't played it yet, here's your chance ;)
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1238

Best Programming in a Non-Adventure: For this very polished and hopefully fun arcade mode.

Best Innovation: For mixing two classic genres into one

Best Sound Effects: Even though you might not have noticed it yet - this game has a lot very well balanced effects. It's been quite a task to choose explosions, engine sounds and gun fire effects without annoying the player.

Best Music: I think Andrew did a really great job here and it fits the game perfectly.

Best Player Character: Hooray for Elfie McMillen ;D She's still my favourite.

Anyone remember these two short games? One about ok, the other one not so ok - but both coming with some catchy tunes. So, I´d like you to consider my first two games for nomination for Best Music.

I did both soundtracks mainly with an emulated WASP Synth and wanted them to match the comical graphics of these games.  Also I tried to write melodies that won´t leave your head for a while without being annoying.

So ....  Firstly, the short game Re-Agent Orange.
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1125
(http://erdbeertelefon.net/sites/default/files/re-agent-orange.png)

And also, the not-so-good because done in a haste MAGS game Alpha Dog.

By the way ... where is Ben? I think all the games he did this year should be nominated for Best Short Game and Best Music... at least.

Unfortunately I don't remember many new games I played.

One of the Gepard's projects could be nominated for Best Programming in a Non-Adventure.

I'd like to nominate Atapi (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1171) for best innovation. I know the system of the communication with the atapi is based on a really old game, but I think it was the first AGS-game with such a feature and it felt fresh and unique!

I'd like to suggest nominating Downfall in the Innovation category. It may be considered a subtle thing, but the alternative choices you can make during the game are really well done and done in way that is different than the usual be-good and be-evil paths found in a some adventure games and many RPGs. Like in real life the choices aren't always that much about right or wrong, you are not given all the information that you'd like to, yet the consequences of your decisions can be devastating.

I loved composing it and was especially proud of the repetition of musical themes with different styles and instrumentation to subtley alter the mood.  I found the battle music for the final fight very exciting as well.

Best Game
Best Gameplay
Best Puzzles
Best Player Character - lovable, bluish, lazy hacker-doggie-dragon creature
Best Character Art
Best Animation - there's quite a lot of it in the game, maybe not perfectly smooth, but to me style and ideas matter more
Best Music
Best Tutorial and Documentation - the readme's are a perfect fit for the topic of the game
