Post by: on Sat 08/01/2011 17:57:47
The nomination phase of the AGS Awards 2010 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=42562.0) is started!
If you made a game in 2010 and want people to nominate and vote it, post a bit of information and a screenshot here, along with plausible categories where to nominate your game (here's a list of the categories for the AGS awards 2010 (http://www.americangirlscouts.org/agswiki/AGS_Awards_2010) and an good example (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=39830.msg524443#msg524443) of a Fyc post).
If the author isn't there to do it and you think her game deserves a mention, you are encouraged to do it yourself.

To all:
Have a look at these posts to see if there are any games that you have missed, and give'em a try! When ready, nominate (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/Newsite/Awards.aspx/Nominate)!

This thread is for FYC purposes only, moderators will remove any post which isn't showcase. If you want to comment and chat, go there (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=42562.0)!

Okies, here we go... For your consideration:

Warning: Fragile! - Chapter I (available here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1346))

Warning: Fragile! - Chapter I is the first chapter of a humorous sci-fi trilogy, where Captain Bingler (the green guy) is given a task to deliver a package to a far away planet called Earth. The game uses high detail prerendered 3D-art and it tries to be a high quality package, delivering a short but fun experience.

(http://koti.mbnet.fi/wersus/wf/promo_web.png) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/wersus/wf/promo_web.png) (http://www.evergrim.com/WF/agsScreen.png) (http://www.evergrim.com/WF/agsScreen.png) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/wersus/wf/walk.gif) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/wersus/wf/walk.gif) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/wersus/wf/pic2.png) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/wersus/wf/pic2.png)

You can check out an example of a cutscene here (http://koti.mbnet.fi/wersus/wf/soda.wmv).

Best Animation
The game has smooth character animation and includes over 5 minutes of prerendered animation cutscenes.

Best Short Game
The game is still unrated, but I think it's a rather short game.

Best Sound Effects
Warning: Fragile! received many praises for the use of sound effects.

Best Dialogue Writing
It made you laugh, didn't it? A little bit at least? No? okay...

Best Gameplay
Classical in many ways, but it was perfected under hard play testing.

Best Puzzles
Well, there wasn't any "use key on door" puzzles... Or does "use robot arm on soda machine" count?

(EXTRA: Best documentation!)

Thanks for your time :)

For your consideration:

(I think I've always had second post in those topics  ;))

DISQUIET

Best Sound Effects
Sound effects ptp88. Won silver in OROW in sound design.

Best Non-Adventure Game Created with AGS
It's mostly an experience or just a cutscene, depends on how you see it.

Best Music
Authentically beautiful music, that will at times creep you or seem eerie, but regardless will always fit and improve the scene.

Get it here! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1333)

Some important AGS people said:
Quote
AJA: The atmosphere is very well crafted and really depressing. Great job with the sounds and music! Whenever you're just feeling too damn happy, you should play this game. It'll bring you right back down.

Quote
tzachs: I got that same weird feeling like when I was playing Trilby, so that part was excellent, I love stuff like that when don't know what's going on...

Quote
straydogstrut: I really enjoyed it too, though I wasn't expecting that ending. I feel pretty depressed now=(

Quote
Pinback: At first I thought more puzzle elements would have been nice, although upon completing it I had changed my mind, as they might have detracted from what I thought were some very well constructed and immersive dream sequences.

Quote
Wyz: Well this game feels like a weird trip and is very depressing. I believe that was also the intention of the game so well done Cheesy The music is very good, without it the game wouldn't have its claustrophobic character. The backgrounds and sprites carry to its grim and washed out character. As I already mentioned I'm more the happy ending kind of guy; well I felt like drinking after it.

Quote
VinceXII: Very depressing.  Nice little dark vignettes.  It achieved what it set out to do, which was, I presume, make me super depressed!  Kiss  Nice style!

Quote
JBurger: Depressing, but I like it's setup. I wish there was an opportunity for some positive ending--he can still die, but I just wish there was something more to it than just a void at the end. Also, I like the grain effect -- how'd you achieve it? (Snazzy!)

You get the point :P. If not see my sig :D

Ladies and Gentlemen, for your consideration:

The Secret of Hutton Church of England Grammar School: Special, not made in 5 days, Edition! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1305)

(http://tom-simpson.com/hutton1.png) (http://tom-simpson.com/hutton2.png)

Best Background Art

Sure, it doesn't have Zverily like these new modern backgrounds but I hope the backgrounds do take you back to a simpler time, when pixels were wide and 16 colours were more than enough.

Best Animation

In an effort to make up for a distinct lack of RoN: Time Out, Mr Colossal made a cameo appearance doing character animations. They're not to be missed, which means you have to complete the game to see the best one! Or die from being on fire, I like that one too.

and I'm gonna sneak in this one, since it is a short game.

Best Short Game

The voters are more corrupt than Fifa if this I pull this one off, but it's worth a shot! ;)

I have to put it here, of course.

I'd like to bring to everyone's attention these three games.

For Cryptic:

Best Non-Adventure Game Created with AGS
This one may be pushing it, but Cryptic really isn't an adventure game. It's just a collection of riddles presented with AGS.
Best Background Art
I think Kelma did a really great job with these backgrounds with a very dark, interesting style.

And as for the two LN games:

Best Voice Work
LN:ED now contains voice work. Check it out!
Best Music
M0ds' soundtrack from LN:ED is really something.
Best Short Game
Well, this one's all a matter of preference. Just throwing it out there.

And anything else you'd like to nominate these for! Thanks for your consideration.

Ok well 304 is never going to do this so I'll do it on his behalf.

For your consideration:

Eternally Us

Best game created with AGS
I feel like there needs to be *some* competition for Journey Down.

Best Original Story
Although the story is heavily allegorical and not really what you could call 'plot based', the progression of events still seems fairly solid to me.

Best Dialogue Writing
While some might consider it a little flowery I thought I managed to tone it down enough this time to make it suitably enough like a play without robbing it of it believability.
And besides, if i cant win for dialogue then i definitely cant win for anything else

Best Short Game
It's certainly short.

Best Non-Player Character
For Mr Blue Zombie-Man who was dubbed 'Hurt' in the credits.
Hurt is easily the deepest character in the game. Portrayed initially as evil it becomes apparent that he does what he does simply because the universe demands it to be so.

Best Background Art
304 did it. He refined each of the locations meticulously over the course of the month and I think it's possibly some of his best work. (Did you notice that the shadows in the denial scene dont make alot of sense? That shit is *surrealism*)

Best Character Art
Best Animation
304 did it. Looks rad.

Best Programming
Programming a full game in a single room brought its own set of challenges. Not to mention the 2 rooms with particle effects that i coded.
It's a little rough around the edges due to the time constraint though.. so make of it what you will.

Best Music
This one is a long shot since all the music was written and recorded in a few hours but its a completely original score of about 5 or 6 songs played entirely by me (except the samples and stuff.. I can't play every instrument in the whole world). I think the music i made for EU is the music that makes me most proud.

Best Voice Work
I think just *having* some voice work is enough to get nominated for this one.

May the best series of electronic bits win!

For your consideration -- Wall-E Fan Game! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=41036.0)

Holy crap this looks good

Nice work

Fantastic animations and sound effects

Everyone loves Wall-E and this little fan game won the MAGS vote back in May! Here are a few short reasons why you should consider nominating Wall-E for this years AGS awards:

Best Short Game

What can I say? Cute, fun and nicely captures the magic of a great animated film. At least that was the plan!

Best Character Art

I tried really hard to capture Wall-E and Eve's personalities in a pixely style that we all know and love. If you think I pulled it off, give me your vote!

Best Animations

It may be a short game, but Wall-E is packed full of quirky little (and not so little) animations. Watch in wonder as Wall-E scoops up rubbish and moves it around, just like in the film. He even folds up, what more could you want?!

Every other award

Hey, why not? ;)

Because nominating games is fun...

Snakes of Avalon by Ascovel and Baron (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1357)

I'd like to suggest the following nominations for Snakes:

Best Original Story
The story was the main reason we created the game and I'm really satisfied with the final result - it's got a bit of Hitchcock and a good number of surreal hallucinations in it, as well as it suddenly turns more dark and personal in the middle. Most importantly, Snakes' story has got a point to it, even if it asks the player to choose between at least 3 possible interpretations of the events at the end.

Best Player Character
At the game's beginning Jack is defined by his drunkenness and his tendency to lose grip on reality. He's a kind of docile everyman that sunk his life in alcohol - something everyone of us can relate to, right? ;) But later on we get to know more about Jack's individual traits and his troubled history, including the one thing from his childhood that mattered for him the most...

Best Non-Player Character
I'm very proud of all our secondary characters - they are the ones who create the atmosphere of Avalon. But the stars of the game remain the moose and the fish - the twisted good & evil consciences of Jack, his insane super-ego and perverse (but lovable) id, the demons of his mind... or maybe some kind of snakes in disguise.

Best Music
A complex and unique soundtrack. Thomas Regin composed a variety of suspenseful and psychedelic pieces for the darker moments, as well as several cheerful and ironic motives to contrast with them (+ you can hear Thomas' great vocals during the credits). Then we have 3 classic public domain jazz recordings full of cracks and noise which we adapted for the Avalon bar's radio. Finally, Baron talked Ashley Johnston into singing "Girls Are Bitches" for the climactic chapter of the game. The full soundtrack can be downloaded also as a separate release right here (http://snakes.hardydev.com/?page_id=189).

Best Character Art and Best Animation
Baron did a wonderful job here. Snakes is full of fluidly animated hi-res sprites depicting a large number of different human, animal and monster characters. The look of Snakes reminds me of underground cartoons - full of grotesque life, perverse imagination and disregard for good looks. There are things and people melting, repulsive substances being thrown and fishes being used in most unexpected ways. And then there are the subtle emotions shown on Jack's face.

Best Gameplay
While not the most challenging of games Snakes offers quick pace and puzzles well-integrated into its story and world. There are also some unusual features I'm proud of - a feeble, unpredictable main character, who sometimes fails at the simplest tasks. There are instances of living and talking inventory. There are the real-time background changes - like the aggressive, abrupt cuts between the two parts of the bar. Finally, there is the thorough exploration of what can one do with a game set in a single, confined location.

Best Dialogue Writing
I wrote those dialogs. I have no idea how good they seem to others, but I'm pleased each character's personality seems to come through like I wanted.

Best Short Game
It's short. But not too short.

Best Game Created with AGS
Hell, why not? :)
Title: Re: AGS Awards 2010 - For Your Consideration

Well, why not...

By the Numbers (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1335)
(OROW Winner)

Best Animation
Vector graphics and motion-captured facial animation. If you've never witnessed this in an AGS game, take a look and prepare to have your jaws dropped! Yawn.

Best Voice Work
Lots of yada yada with more or less bearable English accents. If your ears are not bleeding after finishing the game, why not nominate it? (Well, it's not that bad. The combination of animation and voice acting does make it quite an interesting experience.)

And if someone still hasn't seen the making of video, here it is: Making of By the Numbers (http://www.serpentpictures.net/games/btn_making_of.avi) or MIRROR (http://koti.mbnet.fi/dima/btn_making_of.avi)

Best player character?

(http://i.imgur.com/ph26C.png) This guy. (http://i.imgur.com/9KwLI.png)
For your valued consideration, I present the great and illustrious Oceanspirit Dennis! I wish the Best Player Character award didn't have to be restricted to a single game, because OSD has taken the AGS community by storm like no other in 2010, inspiring over 10 or so games! He's what I remember most when I look back on the site's past year, and he's a character dozens of members have contributed to.

So since the awards are limited to database games, consider nominating/voting for Oceanspirit Dennis in Blades of Passion or Pirates on the Poopdeck for best player character. You should also consider Life Partner Ray in Ray of Hope and The Naked & The Ninja.

Best Player Character
He may be an abomination, but he sure is adorable!

Best Non-Player Character
Isaac Newton for the win!

Best Background Art
Jakerpot (where has he gone to?) made some really beautiful background art for this game.

Best Animation
Take a look at the abomination as he squishes on to the floor after his jumps.
Take another look and see Isaac Newton gets knocked out cold.
Faint from excitement as you see the angry farmers find their love.

Best Programming
Lots of programming go on behind the scenes to facilitate the Jump&Raise tentacle mechanism, working with the Rope Module, etc.

Best Sound Effects
TQFTHS was praised for its sound effects, a large portion of them was self recorded.

Best Music
A whole score of original music, including real recording of a female singer for the temple theme.

Best Short Game
A unique experience packed in a small but sweet package!

Robolution
(http://a.imageshack.us/img46/6505/screeny2small.png) (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1336)

In the categories of:

Best Puzzles
Where else will you get the opportunity to collect bullets from the battlefield with a huge moveable magnet, while you are being shot at?

Best Original Story
The story may not start out to be very original, but I'd like to think that it becomes more original as it unfolds..

Best Player Character
Don't be silly, this guy is so cool that I've even replaced my avatar for him!

Best Background Art
Whacky DOTT style backgrounds!

Best Music
This game works on the thematic music principle, and really tries to utilize its catchy theme with several different variations.

OceanSpirit Dennis: Ray Of Hope
(http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww158/ddq5/osd_sotu_dx.png) (http://www.filefront.com/17494934/OSD%20Ray%20Of%20Hope.zip)

In the categories of:

Best Gameplay
RPG for the win!

Best Non-Player Character
If you played this game to the end, you know who I'm talking about...

Best Music

Best Voice Work
Quoting the mighty Ponch (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=42375.msg562191#msg562191) on that one when he said:

Best Sound Effects
Raeff mixed for the sound effects many self-recorded samples including a guitar amp, a kitchen clock and a VW-camper.

Best Player Character
I think she is cute.

Best Programming
The game features a new context-sensitive GUI.

Consider this!:

One room: a journey into the creative mind
(http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1370)

For the following categories:

Best Short Game
Not only is this a game, but this is also contemporary form of art. There, I've said it. It might be short but it is captivating, puzzling, intense and ends in a wonderful explosion of colours. ;D

Best Music
This game has to be played with sound because this game is all about the music. The game contains original music specially composed to go along with the gameplay. The music changes dynamically as the game goes further.

Best Puzzles
The puzzles are challenging, innovative and are immersed in the setting.

Best Programming
Although the puzzles don't look that sophisticated there is a lot of programming that makes them behave this way. Some of them actually push the engine to its limits: for instance the drawing puzzles uses an intricate gesture recognizing system.

Best Animation
Check out the cutscenes in this game.

Oh, you might also consider this:

This odd feeling
(http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww251/FTUltra/thisoddfeeling.png)

For the following categories:

Best Original Story
Wait, do you have the odd feeling that... Yes, this game has a story which is very twisted in general but also has a twist in the middle. It was made for a MAGS where about ten unrelated but weird things had to be used in one story. This story does pull it off without looking conspicuous. ;D

Best Dialogue Writing
Apart from the spelling mishaps this game has a lot of funny or downright silly lines.

Best Non-Player Character
Meet Frank:

-Why is he in his underpants?
Well, because he got a good deal on his business suit! :D

Beautiful prerendered 3D-graphics.

Best Character Art
I think my brother did a great job creating all the characters in the game.

Best Game Created with AGS
Gotta aim for the top!

Best Original Story
Death hunting a demon, in my book that's just awesome!

Best Player Character
It's Death himself! Everyone loves Death!

Best Non-Player Character
The Demonhunter is such a great guy!

Hi,

Please consider my game Fun With Numbers (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1289) as

Best Programming
This game features an unlimited number of puzzles, as the numbers are randomly generated, as well as dynamic grid creation which is quite difficult to achive.. :D And also, auto strike features, selectable auto movement, multiple markers, and smooth keyboard control. Last but not least, you can create your own sheet pattern!

Best Non-Adventure Game Created with AGS
Probably the only AGS game that you can play it, with or without computer, since you can print the puzzle, and play it everywhere you are.. :)
And of course, if you like fill-in cross numbers, you've to consider this game.

Best Non-Player Character
Mr. Panda the narrator
(http://fwn.mazterscreations.com/image/panda.png)
Mr. Panda is the narrator of the game, beside that, he will teach you how to play this game.. and he will talk, wave, etc..
so, give your support to Mr. Panda..

Best Animation
This game also featured a simple yet fun animation of Mr. Panda, the narrator..

(..if only.. Best Tutorial/Documentation)
It was kinda sad to know this category was not in this year award.. but well, it's a pleasure to create tutorial and documentation for those not

This game is really friggin good, especially for a first game! Besides some spelling errors, the game is pretty much flawless.

TOO FUNKY TO GO UNCONSIDERED!
Fully Automatic Mojo
Multi game play modes! Multi levels! Multi awesome!

Duck Hunt shooting. Spy Hunter driving. Mario-style platform pipe action. Zombies Ate My Neighbors horde chase scenes. Myst pixel hunting frustration. My game claws desperately for such greatness while still missing the mark!

Fully Automatic Mojo is the shoddiest rip-off in the AGS database. Those games I listed were classics that stand the test of time. My game is shamelessly piggy-backing on them in what must surely be a desperate cry for help! That sort of audacious half-assery must be rewarded! Give me a reason to live by voting for me in the following categories:

* Best Non-Adventure Game (Because clearly that's the only thing I have a shot at!)
* Best Programming (That many arcade games under one hood wasn't easy!)
* Best Player Character (She's clearly not wearing a bra!)
* Best Character Art (Have you seen how tight her jeans are?!?)
* Best Dialogue Writing (Witty banter by the bucket load!)
* Lifetime Achievement In Mediocrity (This is my fourteenth AGS game in seven years and still no awards!!!)

Make 2011 My Year At Last!

Your vote will encourage me to keep half-assing it and ensure a steady flow of sub-par games that could have been much better had I only tried a little harder. Thank you, and goodnight.

Have a gander at this effort, then.

(For your consideration...)

Operation: FORKLIFT

AGS's premiere Advance Wars knockoff turn-based strategy game.

What you are ordered to vote for it in:
   - Best non-adventure (after all, it's very definitely *not* an adventure)
   - Best programming (turning a system for adventures into a strategy, and building a working combat and AI system? Hellz yeah)

Go on, have another go of it. (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1373) Battle the forces of stereotyped communism!

Good evening, friends in the AGS community and long time, no see.

Many apologies for only returning to the community after a long hiatus once again for shameless self-promotion. I just wanted to put forth a few of my own pieces from the last year for your consideration, though I realize that most of you have likely already finished all of your nominations.

Allow me to reintroduce, for those who may have forgotten them,

Kuma Story
(http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss21/SpacePirateCaine/PromoScreenshot2.gif234266118)
The 4th anniversary gift I created for my beloved, whom with I shared our 5th anniversary only just a week ago. So on the one-year anniversary of the creation of Kuma Story, I would like to offer it for consideration in the fields of animation and music (Only in the final version, where the beautiful piece by Stian Stark was replaced by my own heart-felt attempt at piano music).

Download Kuma Story here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1361).

It's not likely the best game to have come out of the AGS community this year, but I am still very proud of it, and if nothing else hope that everyone enjoys playing it.
Also, please allow me to bring your attention to...

Red Flagg: Don't Call me Blue Redux
(http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss21/SpacePirateCaine/Screenie.gif238040753)
Mid-definition remake of the AGS Classic, now with 50% the rooms but 200% the interaction, and exponentially more frames of animation!
Can you save the day in this action-packed story depicting man's struggle against nature?
Another entry in the field of animation and background art.

Download Red Flagg: Don't Call me Blue REDUX here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1266)
