AGS Awards 2015 Ceremony beta
AGS Awards 2015 Ceremony beta 2

This has several bugfixes and all of the core features, including all the sound I intend for it to have.

There are a handful of mostly cosmetic things I'd still like to do before tomorrow, like finishing the intro, fixing the irc window, and adding a few more joke animations. Then I also keep forgetting to get more than just a screenshot for the voice, music and animation nominees. So make sure to update tomorrow rather than using the beta.

Let us test the clap system.

AGS Awards 2015 Ceremony alpha 1

Still a few things I need to do, but the core features should all be working.

All sound is still conspicuously missing, but that's a metaphor for the long wait.

I await you in the Grand Hall, where breasts and awkward rehearsals will be served.

Now we're cooking with gas!
Is that definitely 20:00 GMT, or BST?

I can confirm that the test build is up and running. Also, with no one to stop it, I have stormed the stage and declared myself ruler of AGS. It could have been prevented, but everyone was too lazy to test but me.

Life will be harsh under my new regime, but you have no one to blame but yourselves. :=

It was a glorious tale of my rise to power and the unavoidable culling of the unbelievers, Adeel. Only those present who would bow to my authority were spared. As you can see, there were few survivors. :=

BST of course, since that's the currently active timezone.  I've edited the thread title.  Not really a distinction most people make in my experience, GMT just means 'the time in London' to most of us!

I was just double-checking, not being a smartass. I know some people use online time-zone converters. Plugging in GMT will give them the wrong time. And for me it might mean the difference between deciding to stay up late or get up early.

Ooh I can't wait! :-D
This will be the first AGS Awards Ceremony that I've ever attended.

How long do they usually last?

By the way, I tested the client, and it works perfectly.
Although I'm curious about that Password feature. It doesn't seem to do anything.

The password is for if you want to log into an existing IRC account. It should work. The unlock code is to lock away the naked avatars until we're ready to... use them.

Fair enough.  Would be a bit weird for an online converter to offer the option of seeing GMT times when it's not active, but who knows!

Generally around three hours, though it depends a lot on how snappy the hosts are at keeping things moving.

Is this going to be a lesbian/breasts all over the place awards show? They removed it from the ceremony last year in an effort not to alienate female AGSers and those in general who felt it was a bit much. They had a more R rated after party to cater to both camps. I'd like to know in advance so I can decide whether or not I will attend the show.

GMT is without the daylight savings adjustment, BST is summer time. During summer, Britain uses BST, not GMT.

We weren't planning on it, but now that you make that suggestion...

We'll save the breasts for before and after the awards.

I included no lesbians, but I will consider it if you can prove the ones you submit are authentic and not just acting for the camera.

You need me.

Taking over the REAL ceremony will require getting up on stage again. If you can see your way clear to appointing ME as Minister of Truth once again, I could have a ramp installed, but purely because of my unique interpretation of the fire codes.

STUPID QUESTION ALERTAWOOOGAH AWOOOOOOOGAH!!

Are the awards going to be on both the client AND IRC? Or just client. I only ask as I'm at work until 10 pm tonight (wont be home until 11 ) meaning in gonna miss 3/4rs if only on Client. (unless someone wants to build a windows phone app just for lil old me ). :-D

I can't connect. Is there more I have to whitelist in my firewall other than the AGSAwards2015.exe? Like some irc.exe process running wherever?

edit: alright, restarting the .exe after whitelisting did it! Looking good. Thanks Jack!
but it's so empty, let's have a warm up already! ;-D

Weird, never had that issue with that avatar. Will check it out.

EDIT: Can anyone tell me whether they are still seeing the host, winner, clear, panel buttons on the top middle of the screen (like in Ponch's screenshot)? I can't reproduce this issue locally but it appears for others in alpha and beta 1. These should only appear for the host, and I'm hoping I managed to fix it in beta 2.

Is it just me or is anyone else having problems connecting? I'm running the release candidate that Jack's just posted. After selecting my avatar, I get stuck on a progress window that just says "Joining channels..." (with a randomly positioned random avatar next to it).

Or am I just here too early?

EDIT: I'm afraid it eventually crashed:

Jack, it's the client at the link "AGS Awards 2015 ceremony client" in your posting from 19:42:07. Is that not what we should be downloading? Or have you linked to the wrong version?

I have the same problem with version beta2. I was able to connect fine with that version earlier today.

UPDATE: OK, RC1 is working for me now. I was running it through winsetup.exe before, but this time I ran it directly. I don't know if that was the reason for the hang/crash, but if anyone's having the same problem, try running the game directly rather than through winsetup.

UPDATE 2: Nice show, and everything went smoothly! Well done all.

A very nice ceremony (considering the fact it was my first one :P), certainly was a lot of fun to watch read all of the reactions. :D A pleasant background tune as well.
Congrats once again to the winners!

Good news, Myinah and anyone else interested. I recorded the entire thing and uploaded it to YouTube.

The production quality isn't the best. FRAPS crashed once and there might be some brief background audio later on.

Enjoy!

[embed=640,360]http://youtu.be/V2abzsMvJxA[/embed]

And thank you so much, everyone, for the AMAZING award. Thank you, selmiak! I really wasn't expecting it. TBH, I wasn't very prepared at all when it came time to accept it because I never thought we'd win. I can now say I've made an *award-winning* game. That's so amazing!

Also, congrats everyone who got nominated or won. I threw out a big thank-you on Twitter. It was a wonderful evening and it went so smoothly that Jack should really be congratulated too.

Congratulations to the winners and to all the nominees! And better luck next time to all those who should have been nominated but were overlooked.

Disheartened to see the gratuitous tits return (I mean, even from just an "is this the best we can come up with?" point of view), although at least that was only after the ceremony itself had more or less wound down.

Congrats to the winners! And big thanks to everyone who voted for Cornelius Cat :)
Also congratulations to Mess Goblin for winning MAGGIES!
Sadly, my favourite games of the year (Jacqueline White and The Visitor) didn't win any award.

The client was amazingly stable, I didn't encounter any crashes or issues. Good job on that! Still, I was missing a few features from last year (scrollable chat log, different speech colors, showing character name on hover,...). As Snarky, I was also very disappointed by the tits in the end. It was just so pointless and tasteless...
I was also a bit sad that MAGGIES and Innovation/Lifetime achievement were not announced during the ceremony.

I'm looking forward to next year, with even more great games being made!

Some thoughts on the ceremony...

Good points:
-The fact that it finally did go off, and that the client actually worked without serious bugs (I had my doubts for a while!)
-The move to high resolution and Direct3D support was a good call, and made the text in particular easier on the eye
-The semi-transparent chat window is slick
-I liked that the pace was considerably quicker than in previous years, though that was partly because there were few acceptance speeches
-A couple of the new background music tracks were very nice
-I liked the subtle animation of the AGS logo screen

Not-so-good points:
-I question the wisdom of rewriting the client "from scratch". I saw no major additions or things that last year's version couldn't do, and a LOT of cool and useful features and bells-and-whistles that were missing (e.g. not being able to use IRC /me actions, not being able to control what way the character was facing, no way to see the name of each person, the program not updating to show which categories had been announced and who the winners were, lack of music cues and the more elaborate nominee presentation from last year, etc. etc.), so this was in many ways a step back. I also experienced a number of smaller bugs, including stray characters showing up in walls, and already logged-on people not all appearing when you join. I look forward to the release of the source code to see what was changed under the hood.
-Relatedly, of course all the delays and last-minute cancellations, as well as the short notification for the final date and time.
-The snafu with the host not having the winners for the Innovation and Lifetime Achievement awards or the MAGGIES.
-Some minor mistakes from inexperience, like pausing the ceremony in the hope that the winners of an award might drop by to accept it. (Last year at least, nominees were contacted especially in advance over PM or email to remind them of the ceremony, and if they didn't show then well, they didn't show.)

I would hope this has taught us that we shouldn't put off preparations for next year until the last minute, and that we need stability so the organizers and developers can work together and with the community.

Some thoughts on the ceremony...

Agree across the board.

I'm glad that the ceremony finally came together, and thanks to the people involved, but in the larger scheme of things this year's awards were a bit of a...well, a bit of a shit-show, to be honest. Almost five months late simply isn't acceptable when most of the hard work (preparing the nomination process, the voting process, tabulation, etc) is already done. We sat on the results all that time for the sake of a bit of fun that most of us could probably wouldn't miss if it we didn't have it.

Next years awards (and I'll be putting my hat in the ring to help out come the time) should be over and done with by the end of February (or early March) at the latest, with a working client to go into testing at least two weeks before awards night. If we can't get a working client by that time, or we simply can't find anyone to do it, then we should go straight to IRC.

On the other hand, if Jack would like to start working on the client about, oh, I'd say, right about now, to implement all the features Snarky pointed out that this years client lacked, we should be right on target. :P

And lose the tits.

...

Congratulations to all of this year's winners!

I missed the first hour, sadly, but was able to catch the second half of the awards.  Thank you for choosing Rogue State as 2015's award winners for Best Programming and Best Non-Adventure Game.  AGS changed my life by making game development accessible in the absence of a formal education in programming, and five years later, seeing Rogue State on the stage alongside such fantastic titles has been a humbling and proud experience.

Good work, Jack.  Especially due to having to pick up the hosting last minute.

The one comment I would make is that traditionally the awards ceremony had +m (moderated) mode on most of the time, which allowed only those with +v (voice) mode to speak at any given time.  It makes things a lot less messy if you don't have dozens of people talking across each other, and especially not talking while the award winners are being announced.  Normally +m would be removed temporarily after the announcement of each award, to allow people to applaud for a minute or so before the next announcement.  Perhaps this doesn't look as messy in the visual client, but if you're trying to keep a text log (which I'll upload soon!) it looks quite chaotic...

I purposely left it out (though I might use such modes for other things in future), and I quite liked the result. It may be chaotic, but I think this way is more fun.

Hmm... I could also set that mode during announcement and have the chat temporarily flow through the command channel, that way we can still carry on whooping it up in the client and the IRC users can get only the nominees.

If whoever is organising next year wants me to do the client again, I will indeed add the missing features from the old client, and there is a bunch of new ones I had in mind but didn't get around to.

That's an interesting idea, I wonder why no one's ever thought of that before (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=44841.msg600338#msg600338)? Oh, right! That's exactly how it had worked since 2011, before you decided to rewrite it. :-\

Here are ye 2 missing awards

Lifetime Achievement - Peder Johnsen, for his services with AGS archives, hosting (agser.me) and many other contributions over the years. Little explanation is needed, so well done Peder!

Innovation - ddq (Drew Wellman), AdventureX 2015 Live Stream*

*Although not quite so specific to AGS itself as previous winners, ddq/Drew did a fantastic job providing AGS folks and others the chance to watch talks and demonstrations about AGS games, tutorials etc in HD quality with excellent audio and very few, if any, faults along the way. He came from america to do it and was totally on the ball at the event. Sometimes it's not all about the engine (as lifetime achievement often isn't) but also about the innovations and ideas people have outside of the engine, for the community, and how they execute them. There was positive feedback about the stream and clearly something AGS folks want to experience again (in some capacity, not necessarily AdventureX, but thats where this one happened!) Well done Drew!
