Just when you least expected it...

(Clockwise from top left: 2034 A.C. II by Ponch, Beer! by Radiant, That Damn Dog by Tzachs, and Blue Lobe Inc. by Baron)

Last time around, we raised money for Child's Play, a very worthy charity. This time around, we're raising money for another good cause: Ourselves. We all use this corner of the web to hang out, chat, find games to play, keep our shared universes of RON and OSD alive, and host our files. And unless your name is Chris Jones or Peder Johnson, then you're getting all this goodness for free. So this time we're hoping to raise a little money to help pay for the AGS server bill.

The bundle is on a "pay what you like" basis, so dig as deep (or as shallow) as you think you need to [minimum payment is 1 dollar -- we have to let the bank squeeze a little blood out of us, sorry]. You'll be getting four great games for one low price. And if you kick in a little extra, anything over the average amount, you'll get access to a nice 'goodies' bundle packed with wallpapers, soundtracks, concept art, and more. It's a win/win. You get four great games and Peder will finally be able to buy the cleaning supplies he needs to wipe off all the old, stale beer and urine that CJ spilled all over the AGS server back when it was still sitting in his flat (on the floor next to his toilet, or so the rumor goes).

We're doing this for you, AGS Community. Help us help you! Let's raise the money we need to help Peder clean the server. With your help, our little corner of the web can be just a little less sticky than it used to be. :=

There seems to have been a minor error with the node.js server in charge of providing the stats data, stopping the stats from being updated properly. Should be fixed now though! :)

EEP! I've just been informed that my game, 2034 AC II, has a nasty bug. Here's a patch for everyone who has already downloaded the game.
http://www.barnrunner.com/patches/2034ACII-Hotfix.zip

The bundle should be updated with a fixed copy of the game very shortly. I apologize for the oversight. I shall have my beta testing team taken out back and shot at once. :-[

Yay games! Looking forward to playing at the weekend.

Ponch, maybe you should stop shooting your beta testers :-\ they'll learn eventually!

At least keep a couple to clean up after :grin:

Baron

Stickied.

Yeah, I'm not a mod but.... it makes me feel important to say it.  :)

Baron

BUMP!

We're halfway through the Bake Sale now, and the clock is ticking down.  How's everybody enjoying the games?  Here are my thoughts so far:

THAT DAMN DOG: I played this one first and really enjoyed it.  The canned laughter, the silly comedic situations in the... sit-com, the character development of Stephan: I thought the game was hilarious!

BEER!: High score so far 77,000, and the soundtrack is echoing through my mind even as I type this.  ;-D  I like that this game doesn't ask me to make any serious time commitment, so that I can play it when I only have 5 minutes.  I also thought the concept was brilliant: seemingly mindless speed-click game that actually really makes you think about how to solve each puzzle.

BLUE LOBE INC:  I haven't played it recently ;), but folks have been writing many encouraging words over in the CG thread

2034 A.C.II: I'm currently playing through this one (after a six month hiatus: I was an early beta-tester).  As a Canadian, I can vouch for the fact that Paige's goofy and well-meaning nattering is in fact authentic Canadian girl-speak, but the wicked and at times even dirty humour is pure Ponch. ;-D  I'm enjoying it the second time through!

So who's played any of these games?  Let's get some reviews up here in order to motivate the fence-sitters to do some downloading (nod) -there are only 12 days left!

Ghost

I got a gift of the bundle recently, and the games are well worth the money that someone else spent so that I could play them.

2034 AC 2: Ponch is a kick-ass writer of genuinely funny settings. Playing through the game (that I too at one point had the pleasure to test-drive) is like playing the manual for "How to lean on the fourth wall, then break it down, and toss confetti into the player's face, in 12 easy steps". Sadly the Canada jokes and references were lost on me; I always imagine it's a bit like East Fresian jokes in Germany but I lack the background to get the subtler ones. But the good thing is that there's actually some clever puzzles too, so apart from being funny and genre-savvy, it's also a really good and satisfying "classic adventure game".

That Damn Dog: I played through this one in a single session and loved the premise; putting a sitcom into a game and the player into the sitcom was a really cool setup. And really touching to see the damn dog not being that damned. Compared to last Sale's 12 Months In I was surprised to get such a "light" game from tzachs. Do I dare? Hell why not: So sitcom! Very chuckle! Wow!

BEER!: I never got into WarioWare but after a couple of false starts with Beer! I think I understand the fascination of microgames. I suck at many of them but that doesn't stop me from trying again... and again...
I am also using the Wallpaper from the goodies pack because it's trippy as hell. I already know Radiant for coming up with creative ways to code non-standard puzzles, and here it really gels well. It's a fun time waster and casual enough to pick it up for a short round (pun intentional).

Blue Lobe Inc.: I have not yet played it, but at least had a quick glace and I'll surely give it a spin soon.

All in all I'd like to add that the second bundle once more shows how different games can be and how unique their author's designs are. Thanks a bunch for having made this happen :)

Joking aside; I've been coming 'round these parts for more than 11 years and never paid a penny for the privilege.

I wanted to give a little back.

In hindsight I should have given $6.41 more (and pushed the grand total to $1,000.00) but I didn't check the total until after I'd submitted the payment!  D'oh!

Man, why are we wasting time raising money for the server by trying to sell amazing adventure game bundles, when we could just be selling PM spam to the forum community?!?  All we need do is put out the word that we've got a nice little gated online community with a demographic that marketers would fish-slap their own mothers to get access to, and before you know it every snake-oil purveyor and exiled Nigerian prince will be dumping cash into our outstretched coffers! ;-D

AGA

There is cunning anti spam software installed on the forums, so you won't get away with it if you're not an admin  (roll)

miguel

Ponch, you'll need the following ingredients to cure your chronic erectile dysfunction:

- illegal firewater or moonshine, proper bottle booze doesn't work (2cl);
- garlic, lots of it (peel the garlic and rub your...body with it);
- urine from 3 different goats (don't rub it, mix with moonshine (2cl);
- blood from a virgin (this is optional, it just tastes better);

Usage: mix the liquid with some ice on a shaker, add a drop of grenadine, shake it;
       prepare with a paper umbrella and 2 straws;
       drink it;

Tested product by ancient Portuguese wise men.
Working on a RON game!!!!!

Ponch

Miguel, I was with you right up to the grenadine. I can drink a lot of stuff, but why would you ruin a goat piss / virgin blood cocktail with something as nasty as grenadine? :wink:

It's compulsory, isn't it? (I loath those reimbursement pirate buddies, they want to know lotz 'n lotz, even when conducting fairly simple transactions)! Grrr!

Ponch

Teh warez don't come cheap, that's true! :wink:

Eleven hours left, people! Get the leftovers while you still can! :cheesy:

My version of Ponch's game has an erotic sequence and I'm sure this is a bug.
Working on a RON game!!!!!

Got a crunchy leftover for the spare dough I coughed up.

And thanks to you, Igor! :cheesy:

Wow! Eroticism is like an achievement in Ponch's game!
Working on a RON game!!!!!

And that's all folks! The leftover portion of our fundraiser has concluded and we hope everyone who wanted a bundle got a bundle. Thanks to all who participated and thanks to everyone else for their moral support. :cool:

Congrats to everyone who contributed to the Bake Sale  :grin:

I hope this isn't one of those torrent things I've heard about. (wrong) ;)

donkeymilk

no,i think most people are quite kind to bakesale files.

Though i'm hoping to get to play them eventually.

The first time round I found one uploaded torrent of RAM Ghost. It had two downloads. I was super proud- you know you've made your mark when someone goes and pirates your freeware game (laugh)

Ponch

Yeah, there are a few torrents that have some of my games in them too... games I give away for free on my website. Oh, Internet. You never stop being entertaining! :cool:

AGA

Torrents aren't designed specifically for warez, ya know.  Plenty of geek communities use them for free downloads; try downloading a Linux distro torrent - it'll probably be the fastest you'll ever find, because it'll be so well seeded.

These days I know (I admit I needed someone to point that fact out to me, though. I still mostly go torrent == warez). But putting a game on a torrent while it is being sold IS piracy.
So my game GOT pirated before it went freeware.

So I still feel cool. :=

The games return to the creators one year from now. You can get them for free then. :smiley:

donkeymilk

A year???!!! seems like an awfully  long time :(

The world might end before then and us paupers will never get to see or play  them.

Agreed, but how would you feel if you bought a game and are then told that one month later it's available to everyone for free? There has to be some sort of "exclusiveness" and the first sale's games have almost all made it "back into freeware" by now. Or not, but that's up to the author.
There's this huge database of quality freeware AGS games RIGHT HERE though. Should cover your adventure cravings for a good six years! RAM Ghost is pretty cool (and was part of the first Bake Sale). And there's a series of games where some guy runs around in a barn. I think cows are involved at some point. Also try Don't Push The Button. We still need someone to tell us how to beat THAT ONE.

Baron

Gentlemen, you miss the point.  Our good friend donkeymilk doesn't want just any AGS game.  He desperately wants to get his hands on at least one of the phenomenally hilarious and high-quality games included in this year's Bake Sale II bundle!  And who can blame him?  Scantily clad female mounties driving motorbikes in ass-less chaps down the frozen, empty highways of post-apocalyptic Canada; demonic canine and sadistic avian antagonists frolicking about the Schmendersons' apartment; 1001 ways to win (and lose) beer; and a sure-fire roadmap to commercial AGS success: what's not to covet?  :=

Ghost

I agree. And that is why I HAVE these games :=

Ponch

Oh, Donkeymilk, don't fret buddy. These next ten months will fly by! Those games will be free before you know it. :smiley:

Adeel

Fear not, dear donkeymilk! The world was supposed to end in 2012 but look: it's been 2 years since that supposedly apocalypse. I don't think this world is going to end any time soon unless we, humans, go totally retard and try to set off Hydrogen bombs just for lulz. :=

This makes me wonder... What if the world actually ended in 2012 and we all are living in afterlife?  :tongue:

Baron

If movies and video games are anything to go by, apocalypses tend to play out over weeks and months instead of seconds and minutes.  If the world starts to lurch into an obvious apocalypse (up to and including: meteor, zombies, ebola, WW3, famine, pestilence, floods, ice age, Vogons, Zentraedi, Daleks, drought, nuclear disaster, Sentinels, Terminators, Matrices, Apes, AIDS, bubonic plague, pneumonic plague, MERS, Swine Flu, Spanish Flu, Portuguese Testicle Syndrome, weird unexplainable vegetative off-gassing that causes human beings to kill themselves by taking over their will and compelling them to do any number of crazy or gruesome actions that induce head or organ trauma instead of just making them choke on their own tongues :P, and a direct hit from a Steve Buscemi fart), I hereby pledge that I will break ranks with my Bake Sale Brothers and release my game for all to play before you flee everything you ever knew in a last ditched and hopeless attempt at survival against all odds. ;)

6 months (maybe) ,but a year seems a bit excessive.
If it was a linux game ,i would think,yeh ..the linux world moves slowly.
Those who have the means to make a purchase  will still do so and a few months later the paupers can jump on board :)

Ponch

Sorry, Mr. Donkeymilk, but all the bakers agreed to keep their games locked in the vault for one year. But that time will just fly by, you'll see. :)

Baron

You know, P, now that it's been brought up....  I'm having a hard time remembering exactly what I "agreed" to.  (wtf)  Could we establish a concrete date so that there's no more confusion?  Thanks.

It was in the fine print, B. Lots of stuff hiding in the fine print. For example, you have yet to provide the required DNA sample that all bakers must submit to my cloning facility. These clones aren't going to make themselves, you know. :wink:

No! He used ketchup, the big wuss. If he had used blood, like the fine print stipulated, then I'd have his DNA on file and my lab would be filled with Baron clones along with my Tzachs clones, and Radiant clones, and all the rest. But he used ketchup and so my collection is incomplete! I swear! Does no one read the fine print anymore? (wrong)

Baron

I'm pretty sure there was plenty of blood, sweat, and tears in that game of mine you have on file.  Of course, there were many collaborators on that project, so the resulting clone might have one attribute of each of us....  ...like some sort of Franken-clone!  With the monocle of the Baron, but the rhythmic hips of the Ponch!  And the left ear lobe of Frodo!  And the armpit of kconan!  And the squeaky clean mouse-clicking finger of Tabata herself!!!  Now truly that would be a beast to behold. ;-D

As it stands now, I'm not sure why your are complaining about your army of cloned tomatoes.  They will be much more obedient and rather less flatulent than an army of Baron clones....

On the one year anniversary of Bake Sale II, my bemonocled pal. :smiley:

donkeymilk

I'm still here and the world hasn't ended :)
It's been almost a year since this bakesale and i'd love to download  2034 A.C. II (After Canada) by Ponch.

I have recently become the proud owner of a payg credit card but i presume it's too late now to purchase 'AGS BAKE SALE II'

Baron

Ponch will sell you anything if you're paying.  I hear his day job is selling snow-tires to paranoid survivalists in the deserts of west Texas....

I commend you on your patience, btw, Mr. Donkeymilk.  A lesser man would have long since gone mad from lack of gaming. ;-D

Ponch

Hi, DMilk. I plan to release 2034 AC II at the end of the month. I'm ironing out a few minor bugs with the game before uploading it to the AGS database. Thank you for your patience and your interest in our bake sale. :smiley:

Um, so what are the rules of Bake Sales?  Does it have to be fresh at or close to the time of starting, or can there be something well in advance (as long as it's one's own idea)?

There may be no nuts, gluten, sugar, artificial sweeteners, raisins, sprinkles or coconut. All goods must be baked day of sale! We must have rules!! Stop the ANARCHY!!1!1!!1!1!11-!11!!1!

Ponch

The rules, more or less, are that you can't use anything created by anyone else (so no RON or OSD or that sort of thing). It has to be entirely yours or protected by the rules of fair use (parody, etc). And any game made by a baker recruited for the sale becomes exclusive to the sale for one year following the bake sale. After that, the game goes back to the creator to release or not, as they see fit. Also, nothing rated "X" or anything like that. It doesn't have to be kid friendly, but it can't be too adult as we like to appeal to the widest audience possible. I had to cut some content from my first bake sale game, "The Rich Dame Who Cut The Cheese", because it was a little too racy. One of these days, I keep telling myself I'll release a patch to put it back in. :=
