Title: AGS Character packs in the works
Post by: yht33 on Sun 01/04/2007 10:59:23
Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a bunch of different characters for use in AGS (or any other tool that uses sprites really) and releasing them for your use.

I thought I'd gauge your interest in the whole thing before I go to the effort of making a lot of walk cycles etc.

I will be making full walk cycles for 4 angles, hopefully with about 10 characters per pack.

Obviously there is a lot of pirate stories in adventure gaming, so I thought I'd start with a pirate pack.

This is the sort of style I've been doing so far, I'll make all the characters in each pack in a similar style so they can be used in the same game together. Also all the images will be made for use in a 320x240 game, at 16bit color.

Let me know if this kind of thing is wanted/needed, and I'll try to get the first pack done as fast as I can.

Thanks

Tim

Welcome! It would definitely be used. We kinda need some new resources that can be directly linked to AGS, there used to be character packs and there's still things like InstaGame, but new stuff is always appreciated, and more than likely would be used by people.

Great initiative!  I hope to do that as well when my game is done.

Great idea, and that first sprite looks good. Look forward to seeing more.

Bah, no one likes pirate games...

Still that character looks very stylish. Often you expect pre-made media to be generic, but this looks really fun. I think these would be very popular.

Thanks for your feedback.

I'll get to animating then.

Cheers

I think its a great idea.

I really like your style.  Cartoony but mature.

Plus I was thinking if your animation is good then a lot of people will be able to use them as templates.   Esp if they have different styles of walking.   Slugish or goofy or posh etc.

Here's a little taste of what I've got so far.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what kind of pirates they'd like to see let me know, so far I have:
big thug (as above)
hook style captain
lady pirate
cabin boy (or stowaway)
old peg leg man
monkey
pompous pirate

Wow, that's the most impressive walkcycle I've seen in a long time. :D The secondary movement of the necklace, bandana, and face give away how much work went into this. Well done yht33, I can't wait to see the others.

Solid animation there, though the left arm in the side walkcycle looks a bit odd.  Still, this is very impressive (particularly for a free resource).  Nice work!

Shure the character packs could be good and useful, but there is always a but...
It could lead to big amount of real amateur games that all look exactly the same...

Meh who cares.  Some people were suggesting using these sets as a way to get a series of games going.  Similar to the RON games.

Ergo also that it gives a good starting place for newbes.

Ergo..........  Cough cough.

That's a really terrific walkcycle! Aren't you tempted not to make a character pack, and to just make a fabulous looking game of your own?

I can't understand the argument that good templates / free graphics are a bad thing. I think exciting graphics like this are far more likely to encourage people to make their own high quality work than a shoddy, mundane and uninspiring alternative.

Ali, I am working on my own game, as well as the character packs, and also someone else's game. So I'm a little busy, and also a little sleepy.

Still, it's always fun to animate, no matter what time in the morning it is.

Looking great! Awesome animation there too! Could you include a perchable parrot? That'd be awesome :D

It's a great idea, especially for newbies that want to look at more than just roger in their games. :)

I've just been hired to animate on a game, so things may slow down a little on the character pack front, but I assure I will finish it as soon as I can.

So far the big thug guy is 100% complete, and I've got another two almost done. Plus, just for you m0ds, a perchable parrot is also almost complete aswell.
