Title: AGS credits database
Post by: SSH on Fri 31/10/2003 14:04:05
When looking for help, advice or just knowing who's done what we can currently find out who was in charge of a game's production, but unless you load every game reach the end to get the credits it can be quite hard to find out who has helped with what.

What do people think of starting a credits database so that for each game you can find out all who contributed, and also so that for each person you have some idea of how much they have contributed to games and who is worth tapping for help on music/anim/scripting, etc.

Maybe its a silly idea, but I was just looking at the IMDB, with its lists of everyoe in the credits and envisaged somethign similar. However, I don't have a host or mySQL to offer, so someone else would have to pick up the project and run with it.

I have a host, and MySQL, but I can't programme PHP, if someone wants to make it, I'll host them, no problem.

More than one word: it doesn't list every AGS game...

I don't think a new page is needed, won't a modification to the games page be enough? CJ, can you make it so the more information page includes something like this?

Barcik: that would be fine, although a more sophisticated set of search options should go with it
Jannar: There are hardly any AGS games there, and Chris Jones's credits are more than we ever imagined. I didn't kno wthat he played Tex Murphy!

I presume Jannar is suggesting the database should be modelled on mobygames, not that everything be put there.
Of course submitting everything to mobygames is an option, but I don't know if the people running mobygames would be happy with that.

I always see great ideas like this that just never seem to happen.

This in part is the reason:
QuoteHowever, I don't have a host or mySQL to offer, so someone else would have to pick up the project and run with it.

Might I recommend something...

SSH (or someone else), collect and compile the list of credits that you are speaking about, just all of the data. Put it on one simple HTML page, just text. Maybe even put it in a Windows Help file that can be downloaded.

Then, AFTER all the real work is done, someone can write a PHP/MySQL database for it.

Sorry if I sound like I'm being a jerk, I'm not trying to be. It's just that when someone recommends something like this it tends to die away. Perhaps what I'm recommending is actually what you meant?

On the EZBoard a recommendation was made for a database of Adventure game puzzles. What a GREAT idea!! Does it exist? No. It's a lot of work.

How about changing the topic of this post and trying to get everyone to post their credits here. It might make the collecting job less of an effort.

Yeah, It's just to register a new game, and such.
The more games they have listed, the happier they are.

Those AGS games listed, are AGS users listing them there.

I think it's a good idea SSH

I'd be able to make it, but I'm too lazy :)
