Title: AGS Game Ratings Drive
Post by: Stupot on Wed 03/04/2013 01:33:52
I've always been guilty of playing games and then neglecting to rate them in the database.
I notice I am not the only one. It's kind of dusty in there.

Well, no more!  I've just spent the past hour rating and commenting on 10 games which I had played but not rated.
You should do the same.
How about, over the next week, everyone takes some time to rate 5 or 10 (or more) games? If you're busy, do one a day for a week.

Now go... and rate.  Become a serial ratist!

Someone should make a plugin to do the rating in-game ;) :P. hehe.

I'd love to become a serial ratist but I don't have the attention span or puzzle solving skills to finish most adventure games, I've only ever done Wadjet Eye games and even then I needed walkthroughs quite a bit. So I can't rate games without finishing them...

...but most AGS games of any quality have online walkthroughs!

My excuse is that I'm lazy.  Try to shoot holes in that!

Challenge accepted! I'll spend all night giving all the Barn Runner and Oceanspirit Dennis games 5... no, 6 cups! Thank you, Stu, for showing me the way!  :-D

Then you could start by rating all non-adventure games made with AGS :P

Excellent topic Stupot! I've done my bit and just rated some games.

Thanks for the prompt, by the time I've downloaded and played a game I'm usually so far from the game page that it doesn't occur to me to rate them. I've just rated four games and left comments, will try to be more proactive in future.

I guess this is something I should think about for AGSA.
I've already added a feature that stores a value in a DB whenever someone downloads a game when they are signed in to their AGSA account.
So I guess I could make it so when the player has marked the game as "finished it" or after a certain time has passed it will prompt the user to rate it in their notification bar/on their account page.

What would be nice (for both AGS DB and AGSA) is if you could get a list of all UNRATED games and be able to go through some of them.

I rated Resonance and Cat Lady recently. And even posted reviews for them.  (laugh)

Anyway, that made me wonder if Demos should be rated and reviewed separately from full commercial releases, because there is a huge "Download Demo" button on game page, and no "Buy Full game" button.

Is there a way to see the games I've downloaded, Peder? A list with the links to the gamepage would make it easy to find and rate the games played in the past. All aboard the Band-Wagon!

I just realised this wasn't what you were asking for, but: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/yourated/.  However, this probably was: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/unrated/ (and luckily only took five minutes to do since I'd already done the other one).

Ahh both of those links are really useful. Nice one AGA.
One question though, does the 'you rated' list take some time to update? Because only one of the ten games I rated yesterday has appeared on that list.  All the others are games I rated previously.

I'd actually accidentally left some random user's (get8p (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=14087), someone who happened to have rated recently) user ID in the script, rather than it picking up each user's user ID automatically.  So it looks like get8p rated some similar games to you!  It should reflect the correct data now?

The bakesale-link http://agsbakesale.com/ should be removed from the database, because it now leads you somewhere else.
Saw it on the database for to "visit games website" (Escape the Barn and Zombie Attack).

Not on the AGS site no (not that I know of at least, you'd have to ask AGA :)), I've implemented this feature on AGSA..

Yes the second link was what I meant, although the first link is very useful too!   Ashamed to say that I've only actually rated 13 games so far (quite surprised by that, but I guess mostly I reviewed the games on my blog rather than rated and commented on the AGS games page.)

But just to be awkward...

Having a list of games that NO-ONE has rated is of course very useful, but also could we have a list of games that have been rated, but not by enough people for the average rating to be shown?  (I think it's 5 ratings?)

Useful list! Seems I rated 48 games till now. Usually I rate as soon as I have completed the game. However, I recently started to write detailed reviews in the game's thread instead. Maybe I should also rate those games?

Rating, and pasting your review into the comments field, would be helpful.  A lot more people are likely to see your opinions if they're on the main site than if they're hidden away on the forums!

Yes, but currently I mostly write detailed reviews also with feedback for the author and frequent spoilers. That's not something I'd like to post in the database. So I'd have to write a different comment.

By the way, now that you are in a list creation spree: The recent comments only shows the last 5 entries, would it be possible to get a list with more than that? I'd like to read the most recent reviews people made because of this thread and I wouldn't know how to find them.

So far I rated ad reviewed every AGS game I ever played. Some even twice! Maybe two or four even three times!

But the total number of games I played could be more impressive. I barely played anything from 2012.

Crazy feature suggestion: Maybe there's a way to integrate the game's comments with the completed game forum thread comments?
One way, for example, would be not to allow creating new threads in the "Completed Games", and automatically create a thread for each new game entered to the database.
And then allow adding comments (and rating) from both the forums and the game page and synchronise between them.
If this could be done, it would be super cool...

No, quite simply.  SMF is not easy to use, and that is really not something that could be pulled off with anything less than crazy amount of effort.  Sorry!

Even excluding that, what happens if someone has already posted a release thread, then posts adds their game to the database?  What I thought I would add was a link to the AGiP, CGA and Hints threads for each game, if the game's author wanted to add them.

I may be a bit crazy. I've just left a comment, but don't see a place to rate the games (only the AGS panel rating).
On the game page, just beneath the list of details (to the right of the screenshot) is a little box marked 'public opinion'.  There may or may not already be some stats in the box, it depends if enough people have rated it.

Same here, man! I was actually too embarrassed to bring that up. (Since the "new" :-[ snazzy game's page design) Every time I wanted to (quickly!) rate a game after finishing, it went something like this:

Look at game's page:
...see AGS rating (or not yet) - don't vote here - OK!
...read Player Rating Website: not enough votes yet - OK! - but I want to vote - follow link - mostly 404 error (and yes, I do realised it's two sperate categories - NOW!)
...read 'Public Opinion' box, but only up to the 'not enough votes' part - ...BUT I WANT TO VOTE AND CHANGE THAT!!! = vicious circle
(I swear I miss that 'your vote?'-link EVERY single time! - and yep, I'm an idiot!)

Still, my point is, people not using our forums frequently (and me!) might very easily miss the vote option. Is there any way to implement a 'quick vote' bar for numbskulls like me? When logged in, you could choose the amount of blue cups on mouse-over (Similar to the faded out/solid 'AGS Panel Rating' bar). We are (still) 'point and clickers' after all.

edit: ...to clarify: not only for thick dudes like me, but to ENCOURAGE voting, primarily!
edit2: This is only an 'issue' if a particular game hasn't received enough votes yet! See 'Public Opinion' box text.

I have reworded the voting bit to be far more obvious.  I have vaguely considered adding some sort of context based AJAX thingamabob that lets users do certain things, but don't hold your breath.

Okay, the database will now show a game's GIP, CGA and Hints threads, if you edit the page to contain the thread ID.  There's no sane way of automating this though, so games' owners, or members of staff, will have to update it for each game.

That's because I forgot about the old comments.  Comments used to be stored by name, rather than user ID, which meant that any comments made before the new site went live in January weren't being picked up.  They should be now though?

In terms of automating it, could the thread author put something like [DBID=1234] in the thread title to get it automatically linked to the games DB?
Title: Re: AGS Game Ratings Drive
Post by: AGA on Fri 05/04/2013 16:59:59
Well theoretically.  Given the game's author is going to have to go to the games page to look up their game's ID, then tab back to the forums and type that ID into the topic, it doesn't seem like much effort saved versus going to the game's page, clicking 'edit' and pasting the topic ID there.  Sounds like exactly as many clicks made, and effort expended, either way really!

I went though the list of my games today and added the thread numbers to them. It was not a lot of effort. I know, people like Ponch will have to do much work. Still, I think it's not too much to ask for.

On another note: Now that we are currently so active - wouldn't it be nice to add missing screenshots? On the mainpage, out of the three randomly chosen screenshots often only one is available. Is there a way we could collect them and upload them to the db? I guess most of the authors aren't active anymore. The same is valid for broken download links...

I checked and found that RAM Ghost is marked as not yet rated on its database page, but doesn't appear on the unrated / not much rated pages either. So at least one game managed to slip through the security net! Alert!!!

Naturally, only the authors and the rating staff can alter/fix the screenshots, but if people would like to help by taking screenshots and uploading them to a reliable host, we could do the rest.

I know, right? Gah! If only I had legions of minions to do these things for me. This is why I still don't have an entry for Barn Runner on the AGS Wiki. I need minions for my internettings. But who can afford to hire wiki-minions in this economy? (e-minions? iMinions?)  :=

Thanks, AGA, for doing all of this. It must have been a lot of work. I can only assume you have legions of minions. I'm very jealous. :cheesy:

It's actually more straightforward than that.  If I'm given GAMEID.jpg and GAMEID_thumb.jpg for a game, I can just stick them in the right directory and the system will use them.  Much quicker than updating the database for dozens of games!

GAMEID.jpg should be the full size screenshot, and GAMEID_thumb.jpg resized down to 320x200.  So if people want to give me these for their own games, or any other games they see fit, I can do that.  We don't strictly speaking need the thumbnail either, it'll scale them in the browser if it has to; it just takes a lot less time to download a small thumbnail than a full size pic.  It someone ends up doing more than a couple, it'd probably be best to zip them up somewhere, rather than spending ages doing save as for loads of images.

would png also work?
Title: Re: AGS Game Ratings Drive
Post by: AGA on Fri 05/04/2013 19:08:56
Nope!  The system converts all formats to jpg (because converting more lossy formats like jpg or gif to png would be silly), and as such expects local screenshots to be jpg.  png would of course be preferable, but there are already too many lossy images out there.

I might consider keeping pngs as pngs, but converting gif to jpeg, but the image rendering code is quite complicated, so it might take a while.  If you want to provide png AND jpg versions, I may use the pngs... eventually...

But I have lots and lots of games in the database (and still no AGS Award! Curse you, AGS Community! When are you going to stop playing these games with my heart and let me love you?!? ). Do you charge extra for inserting all my screenshots? Or do you farm that out to your minions? Do you accept personal checks? Or do I just put money in my DVD drive slot? How does this work exactly?

Okay, the database will now show a game's GIP, CGA and Hints threads, if you edit the page to contain the thread ID.  There's no sane way of automating this though, so games' owners, or members of staff, will have to update it for each game.

That's great, but there's a small malfunction. The thread IDs are zeroed every time the game database entry is edited.

If you're editing the games page anyway, would you mind making the second line (e.g. "by Herculanean Effort Productions" on this page (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/435/)) to link to a list of all games by that particular producer? And I think the list of credits would look better if the lines "foo has worked on 743 other games" were shown in a third column to the right, rather than as intermediary lines under every username. Just my $.02.

I just realised the edit page was accidentally returning the same value for all three thread types, because I forgot to update the variable names when copy pasting (roll)  Which meant if you only entered one or two thread types, the others may have been overwritten by the other blank entry each time.  Should be fixed now!

Would it be possible to have the AGS Panel cup rating in this list as well? I wanted to help rate a few of these, I just want to make sure I play the games that haven't been rated by the panel yet. Two birds, one stone.

Edit: There was also an argument ages ago about people complaining about the AGS Panel ratings vs User ratings. Quite a few wanted to be able to sort the games by user rating. A column realignment would be required. I'd love to see the orange cups side by side with the blue cups (perhaps a smaller cup graphic is needed).

The main trouble with that is that (AFAIK), MAGS voting doesn't require games to be in the games database the way the Awards do.  So while some of the winners may be available, any 'view MAGS winners' list is going to be fairly incomplete.

Or just start the list a year ago or up until the point in time where we have the first game missing (and the author unavailable) even? And a new rule to MAGS that the game needs to be uploaded to the AGS games database, I don't see any harm in that either!

I definitely think MAGS games need some place to go - now that there's not even an MAGS game category on the site anymore.
Title: Re: AGS Game Ratings Drive

I'll look into it, once my hand is back to coding form.

There is still a MAGS category on the site though...  I think the search function is a bit broken and isn't returning them.

MAGS has been going for 12 years by the way, almost certainly a majority of games aren't in the database.  There are 136 games in the database, of probably 400+ games overall.

Apparently users no longer set the category themselves.  It's just 'uncategorised' by default.  The category is set by the Rating Panel when they get around to it.  I should probably change that, because it's a bit of a pointless bit of admin.

I don't mind that mags games have a unique designation since they are part of a specific ags competition that has been going on almost as long as ags has been around.  It's a fair point that mags games can continue after the competition, but is it really important that they are no longer designated as mags games?  Now, if doing something like a checkbox to add on information to games would make organization easier or more efficient I would say fine, do it, but if it requires considerable re-working of the code for the database then I can't imagine why it would be worth the trouble.
Title: Re: AGS Game Ratings Drive

The coding isn't complicated, it's just going to require a lot of human effort to actually set all the MAGS games as such.  I've half worked something out that should do at least some of the work automagically though.

Okay, so I'm getting somewhere.  With some PHP and MySQL trickery I've managed to convert the crazy flat file data storage of the official MAGS site in a proper database.  Where possible I've tapped into the forums and games databases, to pick out the authors' and games' IDs, but it hasn't always been possible.

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/mags.php.  The vast majority of the authors are registered forum members, and I've put a link to their profile where I could find it.  If someone can work out who the other handful of people are, I'll add that info too.  About half the games have a link to the relevant game's page, but a lot of them are either stored in the database under a different name, or aren't in the database at all.  Again, if someone can add any of this info, I'll update it.

I think in future it would be a good idea to have MAGS voting tied into the games database the way the AGS Awards are.  It would be a lot less effort for the people running MAGS to update the site if all the information was fed from one source.  More easily updated too.

Title: Re: AGS Game Ratings Drive

When you click any of the "Rated 0" games, it shows that it was not rated yet. So that, I guess? Or maybe the length, content advisory and genre was set, but not yet the cup rating itself.
