Can anyone recommend me an AGS game that makes good use of music? I normally play with the sound off for variuous reasons (either I don't want to wake the baby or I don't want to wake my boss, depending where I am ;) ). So, do any games make really good use of music, by which I mean not necessarily that the music is the best ever, but rather that the music is dramatic at dramatic moments, peaceful at peaceful places, etc. ???
DSs byzantine demo.
KQ2VGA. It is the best music in an AGS game ever. It was so good, that I know most of the tunes and often hum them.
I thought Apprentice (http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?action=detail&id=250) had the best music of any AGS game I've played so far.
I'm playing Pleurghburg.
EDIT: I guess the music's not midi, but what I mean is, it's relatively simple but succeeds in sounding like *music* rather than the battle cry of an electric kung-fu pidgeon (which is the best I can do).
Best of all it's tailored to the mood of the scene. Dangerous or exciting exchanges have dramatic music, while unremarkable or travelling sequences have gentle but tension-maintaining music.
It uses music much better used than some professional games, like 11th hour.
(P.S. Does anyone know how to *say* Pleurghburg? Should it be plurg-burg pr ploor-burg or something else?)
no. not even chrille :p
Sylpher's little ISO game has mighty delicious, soothing music. Won't wake anyone up!
Roger Foodbelly.... Too bad you have to wait for it though ::)

I always thought it was "player-burg", a town for adventure game players or something.
player-burg? I wish I was cool enough to live there.

I'm playing Pleurghburg. The music is midi, but it avoids sounding like 80s synth
That's because it's not midi :P.
I believe the music for Pleurghburg (which I pronounce, and it seemed most at Mittens did too as 'Plurg-burg') was in XM format.
But I'm also under the impression that Chrille was going to release a MIDI version too... Oh hell, who knows!
Actually, I usually think module songs sound rather 80s-ish. But that mostly because a lot of people use really old, cheesy samples. If you have a good midi card, it doesn't sound 80s-ish at all.
Tierra's KQ2. I really enjoyed the music and it should be heard. I love the music from the Library.

Heh. I've always pronounced it "flea - berg"
Also Apprentice had good music. And KQ2VGA.
"Plurg-burg" to me... And the music really fits the events... The old morgue really freaked me out...
To teh Finnish people: lausutaankos se ihan "Plörhböörgh" silleen niinkun amerikkalaisittain, ärrä vähän piilossa? ;D
I always thought the first g in pleurghburg was silent. So "plørbørg", or "plurburg" rather.
Fiddlesticks! Everybody knows it's "PLEER BLURGER".
I think Apprentice and PB had really great music. Also that short game, wassitcalled? ....The Journey Home. That had good music. Well, it was monkey island music. But I mean the part in the cell. Was that some sort of iMuse?
I thought it was Plorg-burg.
Just wondering: What does everyone think of the samples used in the Pleurghburg music? Most of the samples were chosen by yours truly, so I'm kind of curious.. I'm starting to wonder if I really helped Chrille all that much :-\
Oh well. Not my problem anymore :P
The Journey Home had nice music. I don't think it was from Monkey Island, but it had a similar style.
The best music I've heard so far is probably from The Find demo. It just seemed to fit wherever it was.
Yeah, Pleurghburg(Plurgburg, indeed.) has some terrific music - It really sets the mood for the entire game. (I actually got more frightened out of just hearing those tunes than playing major parts of GK2... Hehe.)
But shit, DarkStalkey's Byzantine is a real close runner up - That score also gave me the creeps - In a good way, of course.
The Box that Ate Time.
The music is just perfect.
When it actually plays (hint: never load game).
that game load this is because of the oldness of the version of AGS... (shakes fist at young whippersnappers etc)
Anyhoo, I hate to be the one to say it, but Larry Vales 1 probably had the best use of music in any AGS game I've played so far. And let's face it, if there's a lasting AGS classic, it's gonna be LV (that rhymes!)
Thanks pesty!
I think the music in SOL is probobly the most autmospheric and just felt right compared to any other game. Which is why I tried my damnest and failed to make something similair to it for Iso. :)
In general however I like games with more ambient sounds rather then a soundtrack. It really brings out a game when you are say in a park and you hear the birds chripping...and kids laughing...and clowns destroying pancakes...
Or in a creepy house with loud floor boards and strange bumps..Though a game with no music at all gets really dry so it's just a matter of balance I guess.
