Title: AGSers World Map
Post by: Phemar on Mon 25/07/2005 09:14:01

World Map (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/worldmap.php).

Just wondering what's been happening with this thing - it's been offline for quite some time now.

Anyone know anything about this?

I remember CJ talking about it not being very well made and useful blah bla bla and don't have the time to make it better.

But I just have an idea, at least for XP users, that we can install Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/), and pass out .kmz files that hold your locations (better yet, someone hosts a most updated version of the kmz file, which every AGSer can add his own location to it and send it back).

I'm thinking that maybe the maps page should take advantage of the new Google Maps API.  True, Google Maps doesn't have the whole world in detail yet, but neither did the old map system, and more detail will be added for more places in the world as time goes on.
I'll take a look at the API and see how hard it'd be.  All the images are sent from google's servers this way, so the AGS server isn't bogged down.
Good idea?

The AGS World Map was taken down because all the image processing was causing a high load on the server CPU; since then the forums have grown and consumed more power, so there's not really any chance of the map coming back.

I like the idea of using Google Maps though -- so long as the API allows us to code it so that people can add their flags easily then that could well be a good way forward (the old maps were getting rather too crowded anyway).

Ok, well AGA and I started working on a map... it is starting to work, but there are a number of bugs to get through.Ã,  One major one being that IE refuses to work with it right now... if you can access it then you can see it here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aga/map.php), you'll need to zoom in a little to see the person markers at the moment.
If you want to add yourself now you can do so here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aga/map.php?action=add), the data will be kept for the final version.

You could get driving directions to my house from downtown Houston with this thing.  I mean, literally, aside from my driveway, every road you would need to know is on here.  I really didn't expect my street to be there since it's so far out in the middle of no where...Google really knows what they are doing though.  I can't wait till they update the maps for my area and I can zoom in on the Smurfmobile (ask me and I may elaborate/send pictures).

Edit:  I just discovered how to find out who lives at each flag lol.  Nice work.  My compliments to the chef.

Sweet Stuff! Good job Scotch/AGA....

I have a suggestion: Is it possible at the most zoomed out levels to have some kind of flag marking if there's any people in that country?  like there's like a lot of people in the UK, for example, but you don't know until you zoom in closer.

This is way better than the old map. I like how you can see the persons avatar above where their flag is. This rocks my socks.  :)

Hmm. Can't quite work out why that is. I'll see if CJ can work it out, it was him that got it to work with IE in the first place, him being a silly person too.

It's still in /aga/ because scotch decided to go public with it before we were certain it was working perfectly and ready to go on the main site. Over-eager young scamp that he is.

Well it was working :P it just needed some beta testing, and still does, like we probably wouldn't have noticed the bug that broke it just then without a load of people entering data.
I think it works pretty well now, there are just a few enhancements that I'd like to make to make it run faster in IE, and to cit down the load on the server a bit.

If people are happy with it now then I guess I don't need to do anything special to improve the performance now.Ã,  Links to the main locations would be nice though, and fairly easy, I'll get on to it!

Edit: http://adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aga/map.php ok I added some links to where people mostly are.

Oh man.. I had a cool idea for the map: how about landmarks to where the respective mittens/brittens/gloves gatherings were held? :)

And also, games people have worked on the speech bubble! Just a thought... I'd like to get the other idea done first, though :D

Also, kind of an anoying glitch is when you click on a person's mark, and the map scrolls to center it. when it finishes scrolling, the bubble with the person's name disappears!

We did have that idea (marking AGS meeting locations with special icons)... I would have implemented it but I don't know anything about mysql and databases, AGA did that side, and two people working on stuff like this is a bit confusing.

I guess I could have just added them to the html since there are so few.  Oh well.

Mine is accurate down to basically the position of my computer desk. I figure if someone's obsessed enough to come all the way to Japan to find me, I owe it to them to make the last bit easier for them.  I mean, that's a pricey flight. Hell, if a fellow AGSer feels like dropping in, they can feel free to - I'll even take 'em to lunch. I could use the english-speaking company.

Then he tried to kill me.  Well, in my dream he was some sort of demon that wanted me dead. Sorry for double posting.  I'm hoping AGA or Scotch could help me with this. I contacted CJ but he told me to post in this thread and ask them for help since they wrote it.

Since i switched my screen name here on the forums i ran into a little problem in the World Map.  I was Dark of Night and switched to DOMINO, but when i went to move my flag as DOMINO, it just left Dark of Night and added DOMINO. I don't want to have 2 flags right by each other. Would it be possible to remove the one i don't want.  I thought by adding my new flag that it would automatically delete the old flag.

I'd appreciate any help on this  :)

Right, Dark of Night should be gone, and only DOMINO remaining.

I actually fixed the code so things like this would be impossible. Unfortunately though this doesn't apply to people who first signed up to the map before I added the feature. Shouldn't be able to happen to more recent sign-ups.
