So, I was thinking, "MAGS games with AGSers as characters are cool... but only one month a year do we have such rules. Why aren't there more games like, say, Mittens murder mystery?"
Basically, my idea is, let's have a RON-like world with AGS forum members as characters. The only arguable point would be the setting. I have some ideas of my own:
Mittens:
- at a cosy winter resort
- at a rockin' sea resort
Other:
- AGS university campus
Well, what do you guys think?
I had an idea for 'Mittens Murder Mystery 2005' and I even vaguely mentioned it at Mittens. Basically, it was going to be set to Agia-Anna and was going to be a murder mystery... with a twist! I even scripted a fully working interface but I dropped the project when I decided to finish CW.
Personally, I have enjoyed the many games that featured AGSers and I would like to see more. But it's very important to get the characters to be recognizable in the game.
Download Who Killed Kenny Rogers from slugbicyclewhatnot.
I think your idea could work in that people would be motivated. The downside would be:
1.) Who is going to make the first game?
2.) How many AGSers are there? and how do we not offend those omitted?
3.) Personal grudges and putting words into others' mouths.
Personally 2 and 3 aren't that big of a deal. What I'm saying is that you best make the first one and others will follow suit. Don't wait for permission or community acceptance. RON probably never would have happened today if they waited for consensus.
I think it's a bad idea to get into too much self-referencing. AGS is to make adventure games with, not AGS-community-centered stuff that nobody outside us will get. I wouldn't mind a few games because obviously I'd get the references, but I don't think it should become something like RON.
Helm doesn't like AGS-references
Helm made SOL
Ergo Helm is inconsistent
Goats can be inconsistent
Ergo Helm can be a goat
Helm, there are several thousand AGSers and at least a hundred who would get the jokes... the games won't be anything that special themselves, much like RON.
And I would make the first game myself had I the time to do so. As for which AGSers are included, well, I guess that their would gradually increase.
This sounds fun, but how many people will work on the different games? Will there be one person, will there be a small team, will each AGS-er in the game draw and animate themselves etc? It would be nice with some more detailed details.
I could probably help out with some graphics if it's needed. You've seen my stuff, but I don't know what you had in mind graphically. Maybe you want to keep this old school.
Quotethe games won't be anything that special themselves, much like RON.
oh yeah, this sounds very inspiring
Hillbilly, the way I see it is that there will be several people working on the first game, and individual ones working on next games, gradually expanding the world.
I'd rather the graphics were rather old school 320*200/240, because we dont really need a bigger resolution, do we? Share your opinion.
And if people are interested in collaborating/there are already some sprites of AGSers done for sprite jams and games/, I'd gladly make the music for the project.

I'm not talking size, I'm asking if the graphics will be low-res/pixelated or hi-res/anti-aliased/vector.
Correct me if Im wrong, but I think that more people feel confident with the pixelly style.
I wish i could be famous agser to appear in one of those games :-\

What if everyone wrote their own character and uploaded the .cha file?

That aint a bad idea. But it would be good if we first see what kind of sprite shall it be or chaos shall roam the land once more... Err, I mean someone give an example or sumtin.Ã, ;D
EDIT: I'm drooling over the idea of a game like that. ;)
For some RON history:
Everyone sat around talking about it and trying to organize it, Yahtzee just made a game while everyone was not and that's how it started.
So, moral being, just make it Vel. Set it in a space station orbiting earth, that way people can get to any part of the world they need!
Either way, if you just do it and release all the art you used [and make sure the game has lots of rooms [not necessarily important rooms to your game, but things for people to build off of] it might be picked up by other people.
Eric
Maybe I will, Eric, but when I have some more time... now I'm working on the ezine and some other stuff...
Meanwhile, I hope someone beats me to it! ^_^
I think someone should make a game about SCRAMM.
I second GeoffKhans idea. Everyone make your own character. Based on how the majority of the characters look, then we can decide the major part of the art style. Maybe we can also do our own little AGS cyber home as well. Drawings. Vel or someone could then organize an AGS map.
I say the cyber homes are fictional and not real. So a space station or some other planet would be cool. Even you yourself can have differences from a normal human or what you really are in real life. For instance maybe you can fly. Maybe you wear a super hero costume. I personally would dress myself like a Sith or a Jedi or something.
Maybe Vel, you can make some prerequisites for us to submit our characters, for instance:
*Must have 4 walking directions.
*Must have a pick up, pull, drop, push animation.
*Must have a talk, laugh, cry animation
*Must have a death animation.
*Must have an animation that would be trademark of you.
*Must have a sit down animation.
*Must have an animation of you drinking out of some Blue Cup.
*Must have a run animation.
*Must have a falling animation.
*Also each character must be submitted with his own cyber home. Atleast 1 room.
*All rooms must have walkable area's and walkbehinds already done and saved in room file (CRM) format.
*You must also include in a text file some words of wisdom that you would say.
*Must include atleast 3 items that you would want to use in an adventure and draw some graphics of them being combined.
If everyone submitted something like this, there would be enough artwork and resources for people to Make games, just like RON.
All you have to do next is just find a site to host this on, pick a setting for the universe of this game and then make a way.................
Good idea Vel! Good idea contribution GeoffKhan! I am game for this. In fact, I just started drawing myself. I look like crap, but what the hell, I dont look to bad. Now I just gotta get the next 400 frames in.
This is what we waited for it sounds like a LOT of fun.Esspecially this draw yourself as a sprite thingy(if you choose that what we should do can we draw a two sprites of us two?).This could be a huge LOL game esspecialy to a regular(people who visit our forum everyday) AGSers
Joseph, don't you think that that's a bit too much work for one character for the first game? That's what I meant when I said gradually expanding. And Im not too keen on the remote planet idea... I'd rather have it on an existing place.
This aside, anyone who'd like to draw himself is more than welcome to upload his artwork, and then we'll see.
Of course, that's just my vision, that's what's great about open source projects - if you have another opinion, feel free to make your game otherwise.
True, gradually expanding the character would be good. I still think the 1 room thing would still be a good thing.
But as far as existing planets.... Remote Planets are existent, they are just remote... Besides, of all the gazillions planets out there, not all of them are named, Yet. We could give them names in a fictional world. Unless you just wanted one planet or world to work off of. :=
Just my thought on it. Vel. You mind if I make a little website with a bit of an upload area for this? I can call it Worldofbluecups.com and you and others could moderate the site along with me. It could be a contribution I will make to the community.
Sure, Joseph, but don't you think we should have something to put on there first? ;)
Well yeah. But I meant I would get it started when we atleast had some rooms and characters and possibly one game to show for it.
Sorry, should have specified that.
Mad idea, Vel! One setting could be the AGS Office - where a pee inducing frenzy took place... It could be fun to have a world map with all the places like the Mittens campsites, Eric's dad's house, the pub Ron Gilbert & Chris Jones were in...but then that would become a bit SIM AGS :P And you'd need to know a lot of its history to completely understand it.
Had to jump on the Goat Helm idea.

AGS declares itself a sovereign nation! Extremist Chris Jones and his forces have infiltrated an island in international waters and are currently building what they call "AGS Nation."
Sources have disclosed information that the nation will consist of several facilities:
Blue Cup Command Center headed by Chris Jones and his elite officers. The brain and strategic core of the new nation.
The Iron Mitten: an elite crew of strongmen keeping watch of AGS Nation's shores. They serve as police and keep unwanted trespassers off of the island.
Jolly Roger Navy: Captain Pesty and first mate Squinky patrol the shores around the island and commandeer enemy vessels, stealing valuables and spreading fear throughout the sea.
Lovegrove Arts: Production facility creating propaganda films for the newly formed government. m0ds, LGM, Grund, and ehm.. evenwolf receive orders on how to promote the AGS message to the world at large.
Training facility: AGS recruits are put through obstacles and grueling combat exercises to learn the way of AGS. Also, basic tenchincal questions are answered here.

Heil CJ!
I actually was attempting to make a AGS based game during the whole "AGS Church" thing. However, after designing the Church, Symbol of AGS Church, most of the deities (and pixelising the "Last Supper" photograph with them in it), the places- the n00bian lands, the Game Creation Caves of Initiation, the Kingdom of Ags, and the Dosbox (elevator to the land of the dead), it kinda lost steam.
I think it should be in an imaginary place. Not necessarily a remote planet, though. Perhaps something like what I designed ;D, or evenwolf designed, or even a RON style AGS town.
Babar:
Link me to AGS Church. Sounds interesting!
Yeah, I dismissed space/planet stuff because there are already so many sci fi worlds out there. I just imagine the AGS world would lead to dumb Star Wars / Star Trek/ Space Quest jokes (that perhaps many would enjoy). I think an island outside of any one of AGS's many nations would be fun. I placed it off of the UK but honestly it would be more fun to never disclose where its true location is, like Springfield in "the Simpsons."
Or RON...
The AGS Church (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=18709.0)
Shame on you, Redwall, it was your Genesis, and you didn't link it ;D
Most of the stuff I mentioned before I made up myself, not really getting it from that thread.
This sound like an excellent idea! Im keen on making my char, but ill wait until its official that this thing is coming together. I'd hate making such a handsome character for nothing 8) ;D
I have the best idea for a setting ever for a series of games like this. We could make it like Lost, with everyone stranded on a deserted island and all sorts of wacky, mysterious stuff could happen!
And every game, people would get into a fist fight, because fist fights always happen on deserted islands! I think it is a law of physics or something.
For game developers weak at story/character creation (such as myself, *ahem*), this would be superb aid. Easiest way to get realistic characters is to use real ones! Well, prototypes.
I think that if this project will become real, every member-character needs a bio. Like maybe a webpage database (AGS wiki section maybe?) where all available characters are, with their characteristics. Maybe something like
(random example of myself)
name - InCreator
type - artistic, creative, introvert ( silent artist guy randomly making jokes )
personality - messy, unpredictable, strong sense of humor, perfectionist
important points about appearance - jeans, sneakers, hairdo
etc...
and atleast one sprite of course, and CHA file.
On RON site, there's something similar, but when we're using real members, this personality detail matters more. So games won't totally picture someone absolutely wrong.
The location? Well, I never got into RON, especially since the main game area is RON town, which I can't and don't want to use in any of my games. Even though I like the characters.
Location, IMO, would be better if it's not set. So everybody could be free to add something good. But traditional places could also always be there, such as church is always AGS one, campsite goes with Mittens, bar... etc.
Difficult-to-do idea, but I like it.
