Title: An OLD favourite is now FREE
Post by: Nellie on Tue 05/08/2003 11:34:14
For THOSE of you who HAVEN'T heard the news, Revolution SOFTWARE has given the SOURCE code of the classic BENEATH a steel SKY to the people at SCUMMVM, and made the game FREEWARE:

www.scummvm.org (http://www.scummvm.org)

The game can be DOWNLOADED in both the floppy DISK version or the FULL CD version (with SPEECH) from the scummvm downloads PAGE.  It will run on all SYSTEMS that scummvm RUNS on and the annoying scroll LOCK bug has been ELIMINATED.

Be vigilant, citizen!

Aye, I downloaded it too - It's a dream to play it on the PC, after being used to the Amiga 500-version... God, I hate disc-swapping...  :)

I really LIKE this ONE. Just gave it a PLAY THROUGH and I was SURPRISED how MUCH I didn't REMEMBER. I ALSO recalled the CYBERSPACE parts to be much HARDER and LONGER. I think the GAME in WHOLE could be a little LONGER as well. And the INTERFACE is sometimes a little BUGGY.
A REMARK about the BACKGROUNDS as well: After watching HELM doing his PIXEL by PIXEL DITHERING and ANTI-ALIASING I see some FLAWS in these ones. The SCENES are SUPERB but the COLOUR reduction and sizing DOWN seem to be made VERY automatically.

Has REVOLUTION made any other ADVENTURE games?

They made Lure of the Temptress, then B.a.S.S, then Broken Sword 1 and 2. They also made In Cold Blood, which is an action-adventure. They're currently working on Broken Sword 3.

MachineElf (TAFKAV), are you making fun of Nellie?

And AGA is right, Revolution is of Broken Sword fame, shame on you for not knowing!

He's not making fun of Nellie, that's what the text is like in BASS. You see, every character has tourette's syndrome and feel the need to SHOUT every few words or so. Strange.

Ah, they're by Revolution too... It was too long since I played them. I would love to see them ScummVM:ed as well as my machine ain't to good at playing those half-oldies through DOS anymore.
The reason why I asked was that the interface is nice but buggy, so I guessed this was the first adventure game they made. And almost right I was.

DYDO: I'd RATHER say shame on YOU for not RECOGNISING BASS-speech.
But I won't.

Also have you who've played the talkie version noticed how the text and audio in quite many places differs? Seems to be recorded in quite a rush as well.

I got this a couple days ago (it was posted on #ags topic), and hadn't played it before. I went for the cd version download (which I guess is just added voices), and I must say, it's a wonderful game. It's a must play, and it's free...so really you can't argue with that.

I haven't finished it yet, but the puzzles have proved intelligent, so far, but not automatic (in other words, you might have to explore a bit before you fully realise the purpose of an object). The voice acting is fairly good, and the dialog has some very funny moments.

Call me dumb, but... The files I get when downloading the CD version seem not to work. They´re *.dnr and *.dsk files... What shall I do? ???

You have to download the engine, it gives all the directions in the readme.

The point and click adventure is dead. No two ways about it. It is no more. So f*ck that, lets make the ones we made FREEWARE!!!!!

The best thing with BASS is the quote

"Be vigilant, citizen!"

I finished it yesterday; it was good and all, but I thought that it could have been longer. Not neccessarily in terms of gameplay, but I felt like I wanted to see more of the city. Broken Sword was immense tho, so I'll forgive them ^^

It's 'Be Vigilant', I don't think 'Be Vigilant, Citizen' is ever said... Correct me if I'm wrong (oh and post a screenshot or I won't believe you, I may even call you Lie-y McPoopoo)

BASS was a cool game. We had a demo when i was little, and so recently i went to look for the game. I saw it in a budget stall at a computer shop on holiday, but i didnt have much money (well, it was either that or Grim Fandango). I tried looking for it where i live, but i couldn't find it, so i decided to go abandonware...

But now its free... so i can now enjoy the full talkie version. w00t.

the name, Beneath a Steel Sky always got me to deeper thoughts... Once i actually thought bass was the game Another world(which is a great game for me), tho i havent played Bass, i have played the beggining of AW and i somehow love the whole thing about it.

I too just bought BASS from ebay. I wanted to play the full talkie again because my disc broke. I knew BASS was free now, but I didn't know the talkie was downloadable. I even looked on google- Beneath a Steel Sky free voice talkie download full and stuff like that. Nothing, just the floppy version.
Oh well, now I can enjoy BASS again on a CD rom.
It is a very cool game, I would rather pay Revolution then get it from some person, but whatever.
And yeah I did notice different speech in some places.
I remember by the lift talking to lamb, you say something about a sandwich being tasty and all of a sudden
you hear an old man say
"Welcome to the gap robert."

I certainly remember it as "Be vigilant, citizen" , AGA. Perhaps it's not in the game but if it's not, it must have been in the funky manual which had lists of escaped prisoners.
