Title: Animation options.
Post by: Squinky on Sat 19/07/2025 00:09:40
Hey folks,

I've used AGS before but it was a really long time I ago. I'm getting the itch to play with it again but there is one element I'd like to figure out before I start.

Animation. Back in the day I did pixel stuff very badly. I can draw ok, but I just don't have the patience to do pixel by pixel animation. Has anyone used these newer programs to add in bones that allow you to animate easier? Would you recommend them? Last time I looked they used flash style art primarily, and I had troubles cleaning edges.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I bought this (https://www.humblebundle.com/software/pro-animation-bundle-software?hmb_source=&hmb_medium=product_tile&hmb_campaign=mosaic_section_1_layout_index_1_layout_type_threes_tile_index_1_c_proanimationbundle_softwarebundle) recently, having never tried Moho before. I haven't put much into it, but it seems simple enough to use.

I've looked at this a lot over the years. Thanks for the link. Seems about the best deal out there.

Appreciate the help.

I used an older version of Moho to animate the characters in the first AdventureX Kickstarter. Nothing terribly impressive, but I was just trying to get to grips with the software: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/adventurex/adventurex-2016-the-narrative-games-convention

I encountered a few glitches with the old version. But it was pretty good, overall, and all about skeletal animation. There's also Adobe Animator. And I know everyone thinks Blender is very complicated (because it is). But it's free and much less unfriendly than it used to be, and I use it all the time for 2D animation. You can do traditional frame-by-frame drawing or rig the characters with a skeleton:
