Title: Another use for AGS
Post by: [Cameron] on Wed 29/09/2004 07:04:18
Hello all,
My idea for another use of AGS is movies. I was wondering if it would be possible to make movies with AGS. Would anybody be interested in this venture or would it fail miserably? If people are interested i would wish to start a small company making films with AGS.
Regards,

Alec

It is possible to make movies with AGS, its just like making a large cutscene and you could pretty much do anything you like.

If done well it could be interesting, maybe starting with a short series could help you get started, and see if it's worth doing.

A full movie length production would be hard to pull off, I'd imagine keeping people interested would be hard, but I guess the story would be the key.

It has been done, deltree made a 45min movie using characters and screens from games like double dragon and golden axe.
it is on the games page, but the links don't seem to work.

I may have a copy of it somewhere, I'm not sure but if you are interested, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Edit: the download mirror works, click the download link after clicking the mirror, then there are lots of files in the index, the game is in 13 separate downloads and each episode is a standalone game. It's available in french or english.

I've done one movie, never released outside #ags. neither has my game. But don't ask for them if you aren't prepared for weirdness.

I'd be interested in seeing some AGS movies as long as they were scripted well and not overlong.

I was making a game but because it had no interaction at all, I quit making it. I'm thinking of making it into a movie.

Deltree (god knows where he is) made a ags movie. http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=2826.0
The rest of the parts were french, but now the whole site is down. :'(

Eric: GREAT idea. I mean, since it's been done before, I guess it isn't original but... who cares! Sounds like heaps of fun!  I'd be interested in helping in a smallish way if you were to start something.  It could start a whole new wave of thing-making here ^_^

This is along the same idea of the AGS episodic series OsUltimo was working on before he left the forums. It would've been like a weekly TV show, with voices and cameos and guest appearances, etc. It was pretty funny. The thread is somewhere down in this forum.

Whew. For some reason that previous avatar always made me uncomfortable.

God damn it, Alec, now you made me look stupid! >_<

I don't even read people's names anymore o_O I just look at familiar avatars...

Heh, is pumamam still going around in CJ-esque disguise? I, luckily, still read names and wasn't caught out.

Going slightly OT, Kinoko: What about those without avatars? :p#

edit: I enjoy the idea of using AGS to make movies, they would have to be animation heavy however, to attract the majority of people (think of the intro to Full Throttle)

I think it's a fine idea, but if one wants to make a "film" in AGS, one should also include "video" feature - pause, play, fast-forward, stop and come back again, that sort of thing. Those may be harder to implement, methinks.

Perhaps it could be implimented like chapter stops in a DVD, using save games.

Not while a speech is displayed, it can't. That's a bit of a harsh limitation. Unless it's well coded so it doesn't actually use Display or DisplaySpeech, nothing can be clicked while someone's talking. Also, fast forward and fast rewind would be nice, Media Player style, but how to do that?

Just remove the mouse function...

Savegames are BIG.

It seems people are interested so I shall continue with his venture. The postitions are now opening. If you are a Coders, Writers, Artist or Musicians and you are interested in working on films using AGS please e-mail me at TheChosen13@antisocial.com . If possible please include an example of some previous work.

Alec

But you haven't done anything yet in AGS have you?

You haven't even started the knightsbridge chronicles, don't start a new thing unless you either finish or abandone your old thing is my advice.

Guis are blocking, how about having a clear gui be pause, and char speed variables as the fast forward etc...

Mr.C
Thanks for the advice, Knightsbridge Chronicles is definatly still in production so this venture shall be halted until further notice. If you could lock it until a better time that would be good.

Alec

LostTraveler: I say use GameSpeed as the fast forward, and you can have diifferent speeds, much like most DVD Players. 2X speed (GameSpeed=80), 4X (GS=160), 8X (GS=320), 20X (800), 60X (2400). Eh? Eh?

As for rewind, I have no idea how that could work. Perhaps with chapters, as was suggested. As for the Pause GUI, have it clear, except something indicating that it's paused, like a little green bit of text "[][] Paused" (Those brackets are the Pause symbol on VCRs). :P

Heh, that would be awesome to see the dvd player stuff, interactive menus would be easy.
Rewind would take so much scripting its not funny so chapters would be the best bet. Maybe someone could make a movie template in there spare time.
