It looks great, but the demo is very short though (intro plus first six screens) - hardly worth a 22MB download. Is it just me or did this seem much easier than the original? I remember the leeches as being very hard to kill without getting stung. This time I went through the level on my first try.

Helm

No the gameplay and timing is intact. It's easier because you're not 10 anymore? 22 megs because you can unlock the full game in the download if you pay the 7 euros. Worth it in my opinion.

Becky

I already have paid for it.  Worth every euro cent!

Radiant

Well, if you still have the source code of the game, then writing a Windows port isn't going to be all that hard. It looks pretty much the same; sure, the resolution is a bit higher but vector graphics are hardly novel any more, so the result is rather bland. I really don't know why the download is so large; other than the menu screens I haven't seen anything new (such as, say, music rather than a few simple ambient blips, or background bitmaps rather than a few simple lines).

Hardly worth the download, definitely not worth the money. Yes, the original is a great cult classic, but this port simply doesn't add anything.

Helm

Radiant, all the backgrounds can be either original vectors or redrawn bitmaps now. Did you check that? That's where the size went probably too.

One of the greatest games ever for 7 euros?

Sold!

Heh, i played this as a kid. Not sure how old i was but i couldn't get anywhere on it.

Run all the way to the left and jump off the cliff

Chicky

Heh, i just realised that holding ctrl and left made him sprint. I've been walking everywhere :)

deltamatrix

Just played the demo.

All I can say is hmmm. The demo didn't thrill me enough to purchase it.
When the black beast starts chasing you, there was dramatic music on the SNES version but not on this version?

I think I'll stick to the original.

I got one question though.

Does this remake include the level that occurs before the big arena and after the scene where you are being chased through a corridor with guns constantly firing until your buddy rescued you?
My old Atari ST version didn't have that level and cut straight to the arena bit.

The updated version looks pretty cool! Still, the original is great enough for me. I would've liked them to have used the time to make AW2! ;) Perhaps they will in the future!

ManicMatt

I was too rubbish to get very far on this game. (Amiga version)

Good thing my bro was on hand to beat the game as I sat and watched! (Ditto for flashback)

They did. it was called Heart of Darkness the Alien and came out on the Sega CD!

And I wouldn't call it a remake... it's really more of an update. I wonder if the artwork was rescanned or something.

Don't you mean "Heart of the Alien"?

Helm

Edmundo, rescan what? There's no scanned artwork in any of the discussed games. All vectors or pixel art or in the case of the update/remake retouched-in-photoshop-vectors.

I was amazed to discover the existence of Heart Of The Alien last year. I was all ready to call it a lost classic! Then it turned out to be pretty much crap. For all its flaws Another World will forever rule, however.
