As I was cruising the Net, searching for an answer to a question I had about Delphi, I stumbled upon a forum. In there, I saw a little thing I think can be useful in the AGS tech forums. Each thread where the problem was solved had a little 'SOLVED' icon by its name. I think that adding such a thing to out tech forums, if it is possible, will make it easier to search through the heaps of old threads. I think moderators, or perhaps the ones who started the thread, should be able to check a thread as 'solved'.

What do you think?

Sounds like a good idea. We do have the Tech Archive forum to move solved and useful threads to, but perhaps we should label all threads like you suggest.

The problem of course is it creates more work for moderators and/or thread authors.

how about a moderator editing a post and changing the topic icon to a thumbs up to indicated it's been solved?

Surely it'll be just as easy for the author of the original post to do that when he's got an answer that works for him... no extra work for the mods, and aside from a little extra forum etiquette to learn, it shouldn't be hard for the authors. Perhaps it could be added to the forum rules. When people start seeing it, they'll get it!

People are also supposed to write descriptive subject titles. It's a good idea in theory evolve but I don't see it working out.

Ishmael

Adding to the rules something like:

USE DESCRIPTIVE SUBJECT TITLES! ALL UN-DESCRIPTIVELY TITLED SUBJECTS WILL BE DELETED!!!!!!!!1!!1!!!!!!!!1!![/u][/i]

And if some brat keeps using un-descriptive titles, delete the new theads as they come up, untill they learn... :P

You can always try to add rules that people will follow, but it's just human nature to be lazy and not read them (which is what most people around here [mainly new people] do anyway)

It's a good suggestion, which some people already do, and it's good etiquette, and can be taught, but people still won't do it.

To be honest, it doesn't bother me too much cause it's fairly obvious when something is solved, and if it's not, the person will bring the topic back anyway if they need more help.

I think if giving technical advice to people is such a hassel, maybe you shouldn't be in the business of giving advice. Sure some people can ask silly questions that they should have picked up in the manual or something, but it will always happen. You can advise these people politely and they will usually respond in a polite way and maybe do a bit of reading.

Being polite is the ONLY way to treat people in the tech forums, when was the last time you saw CJ write RTFM STFU NOOB CUNT. Even if you really want to scream at them, treat it like a real JOB, a lot of tech support people round here would be fired if it was a job.

It's good Etiquette to include a SOLVED in your main post, and the more people use it, the more it will catch on, but it's silly to expect everyone to do it, some people may just forget, including any of us.

In conclusion, I think people just whinge a bit too much about stuff, or are just perfectionists that need other people to live up to their own standards. It will just never happen, just learn to be happy with the people who respond well.

and just remember, it is possible just to ignore, instead of living your life to put down others that are behind in your knowledge.

Barcik

So... any conclusions?

I suggest poeole just start editing the title of a post, or changing the icon to a "thumbs up". If many people will do it, then it would be easy to implement over the whole community.

Actually from now on, I'll try to change the icon to a thrumbs up if the goal of a thread is archived in the tech. forum (currently I only did one). Let's see if it's a good idea.

Pumaman

The problem with the thumbs up is that some people will start their thread and choose that icon, which could make it confusing. I think adding [SOLVED] to the start of the thread title would work well - if people saw it being done on other threads, they would probably do it to their own threads too.
