Title: Any contributions for Demo Quest?
Post by: Hollister Man on Wed 12/05/2004 03:28:38
Okay, I have been the "art director" for some time now, and have come to a point where I have to say "help!"Ã,  Please, don't take this as just another "help me" thread, though.

The update to the demo has already been storyboarded, and we're working slowly but steadily on.Ã,  As with all projects, the art is pretty much the hardest part.Ã,  See *this* thread (http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=13855.msg167386#msg167386) to see a trailer.

We already have 5 new rooms for Act 1, in addition to the original rooms from the previous Demo Quest.Ã,  With the new game, we're trying to include a taste of the eclectic mix of artists, writers, and musicians in the AGS community.Ã,  Also important is the history of adventure games and AGS.Ã,  Thus, some screens will have an AGI 16 color feel, and others will remind us of classic Lucas games.

For this reason I ask for help.Ã,  We have several artists who are very talented, but everyone has a style they're comfortable with.Ã,  In addition to their continuous work, we also want to include your art and music.Ã,  Even little things, like sound effects or objects will be appreciated and credit given.

Right now, we've got a jukebox that will include a mix of original music, classic game music, and hopefully some from the favorite AGS games.Ã,  We'll need to populate our imaginary version of the Forums with creative "avatar" like characters, sentries, and probably even some smilies. ;)Ã,  We'll be adding areas with Roman, French, and just plain strange architecture.Ã,  We'll need backgrounds of forests and paths, classic and new, from 16 color to 256 color Sierra style.

In short, this game will be about the community in one way or another.Ã,  It needs your input, your style, your gifts to make it better.Ã,  You can IM me, post here, or send me an e-mail if you might like to contribute.Ã,  Make sure to include the name you want to be credited as.

I can do some SCI EGA style screens if you want. Of course, heres a sample:

It doesn't have all the detail I originally wanted to have, because I stopped work on that one and started with a version for AGS with 16-Bit colours.

Wow, I'd love to use it.  Of course, there's always little things needed to make it fit into the game, but I'll put it in my game folder for future use.  Thanks!

If you'd like to make some in a similar style, PM me, if you would. :)

I had an idea that the demo quest could be a trilogy...

you could have different lands... like storyboarding land... where all the graphics are pencil, and through learning about the game creation process of writing the story and making graphics... the world becomes less sketchy and makes more sense.... all the characters stop talking in predefined "may name is bill" responses with masses of spelling errors...

scripting land where you learn about different scripts (like we do now)

and any other number of possibilities... i think done properly would be funking awesome...

I agree with Mr C... we are here to TEACH people, humour is woven into that second....

THOUGH if i can see merit in your process and what you are trying to create then i  am willing to create graphics, both backgrounds, character art and animations.... also i write some mean dialog (as in good... not nasty.... [tough since i made LJE, thats prolly all people think i do])

Triple, he sent me an IM too. ;)

As I posted on the other side, it is going to be muchly educational, hopefully moreso than the preceding DQs.

Thanks Scummbuddy, I know its a steep request for a lot of people.  Even one standing pose is tough to get right (at least for me, I ended up trashing my try at him, I remembered after I posted)

I orchestrated the Demo Quest music a long time ago and I guess I never posted it. You can use it if you want.

http://cygnes.homestead.com/files/adventure.mid

I always thought it was weird the way that was written for what seemed like an orchestra, but all the tracks were set to 'piano'. Ah well, I hope this is better than the original at least.

Wow, that's really great!  We've got a new theme song this time around, but we'll definitely use this as well.  The only thing I noticed is that there is an instrument that kinda overpowers the rest sometimes, and seems to be overloading my crummy speakers.  I don't have a decent MIDI program, though, so I couldn't check what it is.  Maybe I'll pass it off to one of the guys in the team that does music?

It's like StarWars meets Zelda. Nicely done.

I know that beginning is from Space quest, I used the theme song from it for a fake newscast I did in Jr. High. :)

Yeah, it's the SQ4 theme. Nicely re-done, however. But wouldn't a more fitting theme be a mix of SQ, QFG, MI, GF, etc.? Some kind of well-put-together montage?

Basically, we'll be using a lot of different themes and other songs individually, (I'll prolly see if Quest studios is still around)Ã,

This one will prolly be used at the end of the Demo-demo we're preparing, and possibly in the sanctuary or castle areas.

We're discussing a Brittens release of the Demo-demo.Ã,  It won't contain all of the original areas such as the factory, due to the fact that the entrance to the factory is no longer on the "broken curb" street.Ã,  It will, however, contain some brand new eye and ear candy.Ã,  On the educational side, it will definitely contain explanations of the "extra frames" animating background technique, scrolling GUIs, custom animated backgrounds (not running all frames in sequence), and the Educational GUI as promised.Ã,  All cursors and inventory items will have a "hotspot" as well (like AGDI's KQ:RTS)

Yeah, it's the SQ4 theme.

No way! I guess it'd be good if I actually played that series.

Collectibles are great, any clues as to what it is?  Maybe we can work it into a puzzle

Sorry, but isn't that midi just the whole of the SQ theme? Did you rework it or did you just claim you did something with it? ???

i havent really thought about it, ill think of something though. Does it just need to be an item sprite?

The SQ theme was used for the original DQ game, and Sluggo didn't know that it was the SQ theme.  ;)

Yeah, an item sprite would be fine.  Make sure its something that could be connected failry easily.

Didn't I just say that? :P Pay attention, Ultimate Cheese.

Yeah, uh, well at least I reorchestrated it (which after hearing the original, it needed anyway). And I added an ending so it didn't repeat endlessly.  ;D

Yes, you improved it, don't get me wrong. :) It's good, and it should still be used as teh DQ theme, for nostalgia's sake. :P

If ya need some sort of crazy styled room I could make a background :P ... Check out some of my previous posts for examples.

Your rooms aren't crazy, just different.  I like 'em.

If you need a cartoony background or two, all you need to do is whistle. Or quote my reply.

*whistle*

If you want HB, I could always use a line art room, to go from concept sketch to full function during the game.  That would be cool (I had to type 'cool' three times to spell it right, Good Morning!)

How about using one of those backgrounds from that
Concept art to fully functional background thread?
That would be cool... and show what the AGS community can do...

I like that idea, but I'll have to ask Andail.  Good thought!

Better ask the artist of the picture.
But don't pick Ben's background, I've already reserved that one!

I meant the original line art, and I will surely ask the artist for the final.

I think I should still have the MAX files for the area I was making... the 3D funky lights and blue force beams thingy hallway area, right-hand side door of the entrance room I believe... as well as a room that led from one of the doors in the hallway that I don't think anyone ever saw. If anyone wants those to actually use or just for fun, I can pass them along. I don't know what you guys are doing with Demo Quest, making it into a real Quest seems cool... though I can't help thinking what we really need is "yoga for dummies & become an AGS guru in 1 hour" two-for-one combo on DVD or something.

Sure, although I have no 3d program (wait, I have blender on my Knoppix box, would that work?)

You're talking about the media wing, Relight.  Actually, those files would be great. :)
