Title: Anyone making a police adventure game?
Post by: Sonny Bonds on Wed 02/06/2004 01:54:08
Hello all!

my first post and already a thread. :D

Anyways, I was wondering.. me being a very big fan of police games like Police Quest 1,2,3 and Blue Force, I would like to know if there are any talented game makers out there who are planning on making a police quest style game? I know that there are a few games like Larry Vales and the McReed game in which you star as a police officer, but they are basically humorous games, and I am looking for real police-procedure style adventure games. a game which involves arrests, shootouts (maybe) traffic accidents and such. Hope I was understandable enough. :-\

Thanks for answering in advance. ;)

http://www.gaspop.com
http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?category=1&action=download&game=35
5.1 megs

ISN: Kill! (by Harvester)
http://archaicsoftware.tripod.com
http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?category=6&action=download&game=295
1.5 megs- Although may not be what your looking for.

Norman Cooks in 'Search for the Don' (by danny (a.k.a WIZKID))
http://wizkid.adventuredevelopers.com
http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?category=6&action=download&game=120
7 megs- its in 3d. One of my favorite AGS games. It also has some really cool cutscenes.

Ben Jordan: Paranormal Investigator Case 1: In Search of the Skunk-Ape (by Francisco Gonzalez)
http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?category=0&action=download&game=407
6 mb- although looks like it wouldn't be the type of thing your looking for.

P.D. (by Igor)

3.7 megs- Not sure but I think this was a detective game. Been a while since I played it.

Well, Pleurghburg is a classic AGS game, graphics aren't that great, but it has a good plot, and its tough.  Definitely not a comedy.

I do think Plearghburghs graphics are better than most of the early sierra games.

I think thats what it was trying to mimic. A PQ style game.

Thank you very much for the list,  I tried to d/l pleurghbeurg earlier today but it didnt work, so ill be trying it now. but to some of the links i get the message that im not allowed to see the particular web page?

But my real preference goes out to police games in which you are a streetcop so to say, uniformed and all that. ;D (Sadly enough there arent too many out there, i know. ;))

Thanks for the reactions and the list.

Please stop double posting Joseph, modify your original post. Thank you.

And welcome to AGS, please don't double post. There's link that says modify when you edit your posts, use that to edit them to add more.

Thank you.

Right. Story, plot, characters etc and programming done by a friend Dan (originally the game was his, I offered to help out on some art)
I'll be handling background and character art (however credit goes to Petteri for those 4 people in the screenshot above)
That screen was finished on Sept 30th of 2003, and currently there are 12 completed backgrounds. I'm sure i've missed some important detail or something :p

TK, why have five out of eight screenshots featuring the settings panels? And of the three remaining bg:s, two are the same....
somebody needs to sit down with their mspaint a bit more :)

Well, no-one's complained before... :P I'll put up some bg artwork if I'm bored enough.

Well then it's high time I started!

Bah dum tish. But seriously, he does have a point, the Quit, Save, and Load screens don't look so different that they all need to be represented, and not show any of the character or background art of the actual game.

If I had something to show, I would. Play the amost-official tech demo thingy while waiting.

Very nice screenshot Privateer Puddin! could be very interesting! :D

BTW. I've played the McReed game just 2 days ago, and I played it all the way till the credits, (or at least when I held the bartender under gunpoint. ;D)

Oh, god, how I've wanted to design a Police Quest game that actually relates to Sonny.  PQ4 was okay, but anything after that I don't count as Police Quest.  I've had a few ideas running through my head, and I'm a fantastic writer, though I'm horrid when it comes to creating graphics.  I was thinking "Police Quest:  Sonny's Return".  Not only does the title show the character's back, but it also relates to the story in that Sonny has to come out of retirement to solve one more case.

Bonds, you asked about a remake of PQ2... if you check out www.freewebs.com/skimbleshanks/, the template section, you'll see I've been toying it that idea for a while, and was looking for a new interface - check out the "Experiment" template. If you ever want to remake PQ2 and find the interface interesting enough to give it a go, let me know, we could work on it together. My credentials are short and sweet - I remade Larry 2 (although it still has two unsolved bugs... damn.)

I would love to redruM, but sadly enough I have no expierence or skills in game-making whatsoever. :(

But I would like to see your interface expirement though, but the link says it has exceeded its bandwith limit, so ill be trying to check it out at a later time.

(thumbs up for the click'n point Larry 2 though, I also got that game downloaded. ;))

I'd be happy to dip in a helping hand with the production of a PQ2 remake, as Tierra doesn't seem to be remaking it any time soon.  Of course, it won't be on a drastic, gigantic scale, as I'm trying to get my own game off the ground (Evil Dead: Groovy), but I'll help any way I can.

Werewolf Productions has been working on a Pq2 remake off and on for about two years, but has only comparatively recently started going full-force as it were...

Actually, as I'm involved with Anchorhead right now (although it IS going at a slower-than-desirable pace), it would only be a worked-on-as-one-has-time project... though a sweet one.

And Bonds, don't let a little thing like no experience stop you. If it comes to that, your share could be no more than scan PQ2 to EXHAUSTION, see what happens when the player does ANYTHING; what triggers what... you see, lack of experience doesn't have to be an obstacle.

And try my website after the 9th, that's when the bandwidth resets.

Yea you're right but you mentioned scanning? I dont even got a scanner. :-[ but if there are really simple things which needs to be done, I guess i could help?

Anyways, will check the link out after the 9th. ;)

When he said scan, he meant go through the game, very slowly and try absolutely everything, see every action and reaction

Aha, I thought it had something to do with importing special graphics or backgrounds in game, forgive my stupidity. :D
