Guys,
It is with great pleasure that I can formally announce that AGS and the WME engine are to join forces. This has been on the cards for a while, and as it has become clearer that there are simply too many game engines for the adventure game creation market, it makes sense for us to consolidate.
Mike Hunt, author of Wintermute, said "This is an extremely exciting opportunity for both AGS and WME. By joining forces, we can ensure that people get the very best game creating experience".
By taking features from both engines (such as AGS's lack of 3D character support, and WME's lack of MP3 support) and merging them together, we can create an engine that caters for the lowest common denominator, and satisfies everyone. It will also finally put an end to the perceived "rivalry" between engines that can be seen on both forums on a daily basis.
I hope you'll join me in my anticipation of this exciting development, and we hope to have the first version of WMGS ready for testing within the next month. The website and forums are undergoing some changes to reflect this.
Regards,
Chris
Wow, sounds like a pretty good idea. Is AGS/Wintermute going to remain free?
But what has Wintermute that the AGS 3D plug-in doesn't have!? :=
It's a big relief to see CJ is announcing this, i've known about this only for a matter of days, but even that has been hard to not say anything!
Great news. Sortof.
I prefer the acronym WMGS to AGS :=
..that's it, we're done.
That's it, I'm switching over to LASSIE!
WINTERMUT 4 EVAR!!
So that's why you held Wintermeet.. It all falls into place.
WMGS? Hmm...that will definitely take some getting used to. Chris, just don't let them change any of the good stuff. I don't have a problem with a merger...just I'm kind of nervous that things that I have become so acustomed to are going to change.
Oh, and... What will the meetings be called now?
Good stuff.
Love the new forum look!
Mike Hunt - heh.

WinterMittens, obviously. Which again, makes sense. Just how long has this merger been in the planning stages for?
Awesmoe! Now if only we can persuade the people from NAGI, ScummVM and SCI Studio to to the same, then we'd have Real Ultimate Power, not to mention a snappy acronym like SNAWS.
This is truly exciting news for both communities. Of course, I've known about this for a few months now, having been approached by CJ and Mike to be the lead tester for the new system back in November of last year. It was some pretty stressful work to begin with, but after we all met up at Wintermeet to work on the final few details for the alpha version the quality of the new system has improved rapidy. The new system lacks so many exciting features not in AGS and Wintermute that puts the current two systems to shame.
It's going to be awesome. And if you find any bugs in the new system, I'm the one to blame
Truly now, we have reached the Golden Age of the amateur adventure game creation engine era.
My only gripe is the colour of the forums, but I assume that all the odds and ends will be worked out later.
I personally cannot wait!

I wouldn't worry, Earl.
There's going to be a new set of forums.Ã, It's not fair on the Wintermuters to join us, and it's not fair on us to join the Wintermuters.Ã, Scotch is setting up the new forums on an independent server right now.Ã, It should be up by the end of the day.
The same goes for IRC.
EDIT:
Will the new engine come with an 3d editing dealie, or will we have to buy Maya or 3DSMax or whatever to make the 3d stuff in? Assuming there is an editor, will it do both backgrounds and characters?
And more importantly, how easy will it be to use? I can barely manage 2d. In Blender3d, it took me four hours to fail to make a cube.

lol yea, that user test sucked big ones man, were not havin that on the new forums r we?
You just made me quit using AGS. For a couple of reasons:
1. The new forum look sucks. I don't want to spend time on a forum that looks SO bad!
2. I think merging Wintermute and AGS is the stupidest idea of the year! >:(
You should really think before you do something as stupid as this. With all respect, Chris Jones, this is really ridiculous. I feel bad about this. I really like this community and AGS but this is too much... :(

No. But there'll be a new one. I've seen a draft version of it, and it seemed to quite suitable to keep trolls out of the community but not to hinder the potential productive members.

Don't be too early in your judgment, Pablo. If you sit down, drink a blue cup of tea, take a nap and think about it, you'll notice that this is the best thing that could ever happen. It can only get better. 1 + 1 equals 2, you know?

Ten out of nine Cuppits agree with you.
Don't worry about the merger guys, the software is already really great and quite solid and we'll forget that the two communities were once apart in a couple of weeks.

What color will the new cup be? Ã, Will it even be a cup? Ã, Considering the (currently unlinked) Russian flag icon in the title bar, we're not going to have to change the bluecup to a redcup, are we?
In this WMGS, we are just augmenting the two engines by making them one, so I could still go about making a 2d game with a text-parser quite simply, correct?
QuoteWhat color will the new cup be? Will it even be a cup? Considering the (currently unlinked) Russian flag icon in the title bar, we're not going to have to change the bluecup to a redcup, are we?
Why not just place a red toque on our current motif? That should appease our new friends.
As it's actually a Czech flag, we'll be keeping the cup blue. Velvet revolutions, blue velvet.
It's an indicator of how joyous this event is.

Sorry, Puddin', but I completely disagree with you! That kind of thinking is just stupid! What's wrong with you people? Merging these two engines just is NOT a good idea!
Pablo, why is it so bad? All you're saying is that it's stupid. Tell us why or we can't agree nor disagree.
This is the most brilliant news. For a long while I've secretely been contemplating switching to the WinterMute engine, since its scripting language seems so much more intuitive than that confusing Interaction editor. Not to mention the walkbehind and pathfinding tools. So this is just perfect.
May I suggest though that the maximum resolution is raised to 1600x1200? 1024x768 is far from enough for a modern day adventure game. And also, have you considered joining forces with the TADS developers to replace the current parser functions in AGS?
CJ, this is truly a great day in adventure game history.
Pablo, What do you mean it's not a good idea? I mean, hell, that's what all sane people here on the board have been waiting for for so many years! What a happy day it is :D
Finally the forums have the slick script-kiddie look they always deserved! The avatars of some guys also look strangely better. And while this is exiting news, we have to accept that Wintermute was just plain better from the beginning on, I even wonder why it took so long for them to take over. Congratulations.
Yes...The Evolution is here. AGS has finally grown up. :)
Love the white letters on the black background. Awesome!!
Hey, how come we can't download or view any games right now? :oWill we be able to soon? >terrible need to check games growing<
The first announced game is here -> http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=25854
it will 'launch' with the editor
I've just realised (it's taken me a few hours for the shock factor to wear off, thanks for not inviting me to Wintermeet).. HARDWARE SUPPORT for the graphics.. You don't realise how thankful I am for this merger.
I am quite welcome to this merger. It seems development has been heading in that way already, so it's a good idea to speed up that process. Can't wait to try the new version :=

Don't worry. Can you say Hostile takeover. You never know what card CJ has up his sleeve.
I had heard rumors this was coming ... but I just didn't believe it.
Oh well, I suppose it was inevitable.
With the collapse of Amulet of Kings (yes, it's been officially cancelled) I suppose it's no wonder this happened too.
Sigh ... it's a dark time for the world of Amateur Adventure Games.
I'm dyin', just dyin' over here.
But seriously, the darker background does wonders over in the Critics Lounge.

I'm sure next year the new leaders of the WMGS will just buy out sludge... and make it free, too!
This is now the ultimate power in the underground adventure universe!
Well I guess that Sludge wouldn't have survived by the impact of the almighty WMGS anyway.
In comparison, Sludge will now be inferior to WMGS in every aspect.
Bye bye Sludge, I won't miss you anyway!
i suppose that rumour about grundislav switching to wintermute is gonna be true after all, eh? :)
Nope, as there won't be AGS or Wintermute anymore.
Brilliant idea! Absolutely fantastic!
I've always wanted to make my own ram-eating hi-res rendered adventure games! This is something thats gonna be kickass.
OMG! WTF! AGS!11Ã,Â
AGS and Wintermut! Simply amazing. Now I can begin work on: MIGTA, IJGTA, S&MGTA and many more...
So the new engine name is Winter Game Studio. hmm very "cool"
Hmmm thinking about WME. I might want to look into it as a development tool. It's so much better, much more modern... ;)
Can't you include TreeMagik G2 so I can have it for free?
PS. I know your true plans are to make this commercial, I just know it !!!
What Pablo said made me think through this again. Ofcource it's great to have all the new features and new community members etc. BUT what about the true essence of AGS? Will we have to start being nice to people, and stop banning people for asking intelligent questions?
To be honest, I'm a bit worried...
I don't feel any need to explain my own opinions to you people! I just think this idea is stupid! Now leave me alone you bunch of fools! Go make games with your new WinterAGS or something! >:(
You cutie innocent AGSiess... you've still not realized this have been a "coaction" act (now that's a good euphemism) over CJ by the Wintermute Army! We're more powerful than ever!! Now WME has showed its true face!! Check it!

Be afraid!!
Well I'm gutted to see this happen, although I somehow knew it was on the cards.
What most of you won't be aware of is that, while some of us were down in Brighton a few weeks back, Chris actually went missing for 8 hours...
Now, I don't won't to be the one to point any fingers, but I'm pretty certain that Andail's housemates were big Wintermute users (Some may even say fanatics), and I strongly believe that they somehow 'got' to Chris, and forced him down this route. Whether they had some dirt on him, such as his 'relationship' with the SCRAMM team, I don't know.
This is quite a sinister turn of events, and I think we should all be very careful as to what we say around Chris. Personally, I think there should be a vote to see if we even want him at this year's Mittens - It would be like inviting the wolf into the chicken hut.
If anyone wishes to discuss anymore 'affirmative' action, I suggest we organise a secret meeting place with codes phrases and handshakes.
Who's with me?
Next time CJ changes the forum he should do it properly. The bottom copyright banner is far too wide.
This can only end in one way...

The world is changing, face it. Coalitions and multinational companies are the norm for game engines. Imagine all the (shareware) features we'll enjoy... It was good to merge the engines or Mahjong would dominate the world...
LMAO
The new homepage is great. More people should be that honest about their product.
;D
hang on, is this april fools or what?
No. CJ is usually dead serious when it comes to stuff like this. Or atleast he wouldn't go to so much trouble to prank us. He's a lazy bum. Only does what's neccesary.
Wintermute sux teh peen! AGS does too! I boycot!
Good-day, infidels!
I never even heard of Wintermute, but I do have a bad feeling about this. Dunno why, though.
I guess I'll just wait and see what happens, leaving a "backup copy" of AGS on my hard drive, just in case.
Until then, it's all anticipation.

Agreed. Quakers don't celebrate this day. He's not kidding.
Seriously, why are people so against this? I see mostly new members apalled, though in theory it should be easier for them to change over, since they are not as used to how AGS is/was as the older members. Personally, I am looking forward to getting my game out faster now that I don't have to animate in 2D.
I think this could be a nice thing. I don't know anything about wintermute but a merge just means more right? At least I hope. The main thing I'm concerned about is this: Why can't we access the site right now?!?! I need to browse already made games! I need to look at screenshots! I need to find these people's webpages and make funny faces at them! WHY?! WHY?!
That is all.
What do you mean 'already made games'? The new engine is not ready yet. Privateer Puddin' has a beta version of it with which he's making the Drugbust 3D version to be released alongside the engine to demonstrate what it can do. And other things.

Slashdot effect. Everybody is downloading the combined beta version. I suggest you try again every thirty minutes or so, you'll probably get through quickly.
I actually downloaded the beta last night and now I'm working on my new game... "Monkey Island Grand Prix"
I decided to use the build-in 3d Vehicle Animation Mashine Plug-in (Also known as VAMP) to make the ultimate racing simulator. You can choose between LeChuck, the 3-headed monkey, Stan and other racers. It will have a race track in every Island that ever apeared in MI. You can choose between 16 vehicles like: Whoop Cart, Sea Monkey, Sloppy Barber, Voodoo Doodoo and more.

I mean AGS games. "Short Games" "Medium Length Games" "Full length Games" etc. Ones that've already been mad on AGS and we used to be able to browse through by category. They're gone! I can't find them! >pants< I like to check the games most recently added to the vast amount listed by AGS, but since they're merging the site wont show old AGS games it seems. I'm not talking about WMGS games, I'm talking about AGS games.
just go www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?
CHA! Thanks! (it wasn't linked on the main page, so I couldn't find it) 1000 thanks!!
umm, I decided not to post in here earlier cause I felt this was all a joke cause:
1st. The forum and website got changed not long after the date turned into 1st of april.
2nd. Why only change the front page? and leave everything else as it was?
What I mean is, it looks like it is just 1 file changed (easy to delete and upload last file). And if you go on www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php you get the old website with the menu and all and all of the links are working as they did on the 31st of march and its only the "home" link that is changed..
3rd. Why has noone announced it on the Wintermute forum? Yes I saw the post linked in a post above here somewhere, but it was not started by any of the crew there. ??.
Well anyway, I guess will find out in not so long if it is a joke or not, so I guess I'll just wait and see........
And, I will not use this new engine! I will continue using the last AGS engine if this is all true......
I guess MAGS and all other competitions should be closed then or?
How would this be if this is not a joke (something I do believe and probably allways will believe).
Sadly it's not a joke. There has been talk about this here and there for a while. I'm not sure that I'll be sticking around either. It's really a sad, sad day. And I had just about completed Emily Enough 2! Screw it, I'll just make a different game.
Why on earth would the competitions be closed, Peder? The Sprite Jam, for instance, has nothing to do with whether or not we involve wintermute - although, we might start seeing more 3D entries.
Seriously, I think you guys are trying to find excuses as to why this is a bad idea, instead of being rational.
As for myself.. I was against this at first, but now I find it exciting!
I managed to get the beta in #ags a few days ago, woo! :=

This may not be true, but it is not a joke. In truth, the developers of TADS and HUGO put this out to distract us, so we wouldn't realize they had shut BOTH engines down to facilitate the return of, I quote, "REAL adventure games".
HoN
I was hesitant to post, I know how it's kinda pointless in discussions like this, but every year it strikes me how many people fall for this. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the effort, it's original every year, but you know...come on. I haven't been around thát long, but I've read CJ's infamous April 1st posts. Like the AGS shareware, remember that one?
Ah well I shall refrain from further judging until tomorrow.
yeh but this actually seems real.
Of coarse it's real, after all, April fools ends at midday, and it is 5pm in england where CJ is. I have the beta, and am halfway through making the first RotN game with 3d characters. Its bloody fantastic. I can actually use different angles to create mise-en-scene. Atmospheric, yes. Thanks to the WMGS team.

No, MAGS is a monthly competition to make a small but nice game within certain strict rules. We may have to change the acronym, but that won't change the concept.
The cool part is that certain competitions that traditionally had rather few entries (such as Puzzle Time) will be reinvigorated.

Whether this is a joke or not, I can't see everybody happy in either situation. Some people seem really excited. I wonder if maybe they'll keep AGS and Wintermute the same, but then make WMGS a whole new engine. That would probably please the crowd anyway. You guys are too easy to fool, of course it's an April Fool's Day joke.
Watch, at the end of the day or a couple of days from now everything will return back to normal.
The same thing happened with the shareware version of AGS. It was made to be so believable that it couldn't possibly have been a joke even if it was on the 1st of April. It is a joke and I have my final word on that. A very good one at that though, I'm not critizising it but it's not the truth, just a wonderfully crafted prank. :)
Yes, it was an April Fool. I really didn't expect anyone to believe it, given that it said things like
QuoteBy taking features from both engines (such as AGS's lack of 3D character support, and WME's lack of MP3 support) and merging them together, we can create an engine that caters for the lowest common denominator
and
QuoteAGS does not include experimental support for real-time rendered 3D characters. Extensive research has demonstrated that the use of 3D characters in adventure games can be linked to the development of pancreatic cancer, as well as other health problems in later life. For your safety, these features are not used in AGS.
So, for the 1 of you that did fall for it hook, line and sinker, consider yourself fooled :P
I apologise to the people whose posts I deleted because they revealed it was a fool early on, but I have to ask you this:
Once you realise it's an april fool, why do you feel the need to post "April Fool LOL" or "Haha good one"? Surely it's more fun to play along, consider yourself smart and see who else falls for it, rather than spoiling the fun?

Once you realise it's an april fool, why do you feel the need to post "April Fool LOL" or "Haha good one"? Surely it's more fun to play along, consider yourself smart and see who else falls for it, rather than spoiling the fun?
Because I know, that some people don't consider things like this fun. Maybe you think it's no big deal, I, too, think that way. But I know that others don't. So I gave a little hint for those, who didn't understand the April Fool, either because they don't have things like that in their home, or they just didn't realize it (although there was this blue "April Fools Day" label on the calender on bottom of the page).
But it really was a good one! One of the most sophisticated April Fools I know.
I'm wondering how you gonna top it next year :)
cheers

Yes, it was an April Fool. I really didn't expect anyone to believe it, given that it said things like
Aahhh, Pumaman admits his deceit... but if he is really devious, then his earlier statement was in fact true, and this one is the deceit! Layers upon layers, muahahahah!

Yes, just like thingy said! I could see people were getting worked up over it so I spilled the beans. Also, it showed I is smart. ;D
Also ... for those that didn't realize, my proclamation that Amulet of Kings was cancelled was also part of the joke.
Amulet of Kings is still in production.
Here in Spain April's fool is on 28th of December, so, for the first second I thought that the wintermute Army was hacking our page.
Then I realised about the day and I decided to complain about the skin of the webpage to have some lauhgs.
It's been funny ^_^.
Yeh, this was fun. Obvious, but fun. :P I also kind of disliked that some people spilled the beans too early, though. But still it was a funny joke. :) Now please, CJ, bring back the old forum look. These colors hurt my eyes. :D
Late last night I sat here waiting what will Chris come up with this year :=
And then someone rammed onto IRC and asked what's wrong with the forums. A really good one CJ. Shall we see how long this thread fools people, or does the previous one hold it's lead in the record?
And, are there any statistics on the download spike, for people who didn't believe the rumor but downloaded the most current version of AGS anyway just to be on the safe side?

I really thought this is serious because i saw this... LoL
Was sceptical due to the april fools date... Then I went to check out the WME site and founf no mention of it... Thats when I knew nothing.
Rather dissapointed cause drug bust fighting looked awesome!
Well I preffer AGS instead of the WMGS... would just be wrong!
I got the WMGS gag pretty soon, however..
It took me half a day to realise Darth was joking. Ã, With all the fooling around, the Amulet of Kings cancellation was so subtle I completed believed.
As for the spoil sports, it's just mean. Ã, Not everyone reads at the same time as you, so please, don't ruin it for everyone else. Ã, It's like giving away the ending of a film to the people queueing up to see it.
Congratulations on another successful Fooling, Mr. J. Ã, You sir, are the king of the jesters.

WEll it's funny as the WME forums don't have these colours. They have these kind blue-ish colours Ã, ;D
Plus right now, there is some kind of war there at the WME! God knows what ;)
My first thought was that a really strange virus had struck my computer. And I do confess a very quick questio nover MSN to Helm, who kindly did not respond. The rest of the day went by trying to shop for a Sofa bed Ã, :P
Anyways, I have to admit that CJ has humour! And tons of it apparently!
Well done Chris!
*Applauds for perfectly excecuted aprils fool joke*
I was seriously scared! :P I was actually considering leaving the community ;D Good one...
CJ, this was funny ;D
Yeah, it was really. But, please, give us the old look back ;D
cheers

The old forum look is coming back at midnight.
I was fooled for about 5 minutes, when i kept clicking on my AGS Forums Tab, then i looked at the date and i was like, oh...this is a good one, and played along.
The only thing i am gonna miss about the current color scheme for the forums, is how everybody's avatar seems so much brighter and viewable. Other than that, i miss the blue.
Oh, yeah, I forgot I'm on GMT +1 here ;D

Except it isn't like that at all.
FINE! :P Next year when CJ claims that the AGS engine has a virus that crept into it and all our computers will blow up, I won't say a word! I will let you all writhe in torment!
It kind of is. Posting "lol april fools" in an april fools joke thread is stupid.

My favorite quote from this thread:
Quotebut who the hell is Mike Hunt??
;D It's always funnier when someone doesn't get it!
When I came on the site yesterday I did fall for this April fool's joke after I had read the posts, despite the obvious signs that pointed that it was a joke! Glad now that I didn't post to air my disappointment before I realized that it was. I even searched AGS on Wikipedia to see if it had been updated!!! I thought it was quite amusing though, how I actually fell for this joke (as if CJ would make such a ghastly background colour & title without saying first about the merger) and I'm sure if a few of the other members were honest did also. ;D :D ;D. What about Drugbust though? I suppose that was part of the joke but from the screenshots and demo it looked really good!
I knew it was a joke. I could tell by a lot of the content on the main page.
I might have been fooled for a minute or two, but then I realized what day it was.
Obviously. I can't believe people always fall for these same kinds of jokes even after they remember it's April Fool's.
I mean, I did, but only after some people were trying to convince me it wasn't... xD
Well, I wasn't fooled that easily, not only I knew it was April the first yesterday but the change of everything was all too sudden, plus when there was nothing you could go except for the forums I thought "This can't be for real, it's got to be an April Fool's joke".
Sheesh, I can't believe that so many of you did fall for this. (shakes my head while rolling my eyes)
Maybe they're all joking about falling for it.

Maybe or maybe not.
Maybe you're joking about NOT falling for it

The forums and the information page... That was just so over the top already, there really wasn't any chance of this not being an april fools joke :P
Anyway, anyone who thought they're so smart, failed to play with the rules and post "HAHA this is April Fool, I knew this!" are real April Fools.
Kudos to those who falled for it, and to those who didn't but played along. You made a great thread and a good laugh!
Not-kudos to those who were just dying to prove themselves smart by revealing the joke :(
Since when did intelligence amount to having a calendar?
February 72 in 1948, according to mine.
Wasn't a bad prank this year. I got fooled a few years back when CJ announced that he was stopping making AGS [edit: or was that the shareware thing instead? I forget] . After that I've always been wary of the internet on April the 1st... It is indeed a scary place.
Bloody hell, the one weekend I was not here but home fixing my brother's computer you people go and do this >:(
Ok I admit I went to #AGS after I saw the new forum look, which I then commented on ::) and asked what the f**k is wrong with the forums. Ishmael I recall linking me to this thread, but I really didn't read it until now. Though I would surely have been fooled pretty bad since for the last 10 years April fools day has been so irrelevant for me, I don't recall even noting the day until now. Thanks for bringing the habit back to me :)
I stated that I had a "bad feeling" about this, and that I didn't know why.
That was solely for the purpose that I can now prove I didn't fall for it. And that's what apparently many others should have done instead of reveiling the whole thing.
However, that was a great one. I must admit I would've fallen for it if it wasn't for the "new main page." I was in a hurry and therefore couldn't think over what I read. And the game cancellation--I did believe that. Well done, involved ones.
Applause.

I didn't fall for it, but I liked watching it unfold.
I must admit I got a bit of a shock when I first saw the forums. :P
All in all, a good jape indeed.
Harhahrahr! You fools me all :D I missed the front page, doh! Did anyone take a screenie? Funny that it fooled some people though! Hehehe! I knew the instant I saw the post that this was just another CJ-naniggan...ol' AGS with its April Fools legacy ;)
Not nearly as clever as FoY on the iPod tho :P

Darn, I missed all the fun (but was very amused reading the whole thread now). :)
Did anybody store the "WMGS" homepage as HTML or JPG or whatever?
Great one! I will have to annoy Mnemonic to get the MP3 support in WME now though... ;)

The April Fools homepage is still here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/wme.htm
I could bring back the WME forum skin and take a screenshot, but I'm too lazy.

Indeed, impressed I am. ;)

I captured that when I created the official "WTFH I didn't read CJ's thread and started my own" WME thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=25864.0).
[EDIT:]
"You can also...override and customize build-in methods."
What??? How???

I'm developer, I understand that. Fortunately you had some slav...*hem* friendly users, which did the job. ;)
Wait, after that homepage some guys did NOT get the joke? LMAO... well, must be the ugly design which made them skipping it.
Wait again - actually *I* did that design some time ago... :o
Cheers!
My, I almost died of laughing in reading the whole thing!
Yes, I was worry though!
I really didn't fall for it due to the following reasons:
1) I did find strange in reading WME to completely take over.
2) AGS is an excelent tool in developping excellent game such as Prodigal (from Trisk), I took part of the beta testing. If you haven't tried, I highly recommend it.
It's good I read everything before!
Well April fools, your birthday is on April the 1st.
Oh well, happy belated brithday!
