Title: AVG and false positives?
Post by: Sslaxx on Fri 12/11/2010 13:37:56
This isn't a technical question, but I've been getting false positives from AVG 2011 (10) with AGS-created stuff. Anyone else been getting this? I'll note the prior version of AVG didn't cause this.

A Tale Of Two Kingdoms was getting this at one point, if I recall.

since AGS embeds things inside an EXE file it will often get flagged as a trojan because this is exactly how trojans work.

Basically the only way to fix it is submit the false positive to AVG so they can update their database.

I'm using AVG, and no trouble with anything. I've updated to every version of it since Christmas and had no problem with AGS engine versions or executables whatsoever.

I also use Avira Antivir, but from the first posts in this thread I couldn't imagine what AVG is (I thought it was some AGS Plugin or similar)

Me too  ::)

But I don't have Antivir. I used it many years ago and it sucked so badly that I decided never to use it again.

AVG never flagged any ags game or the editor as a trojan here. I've updated to 2011 today and still no issues.

Just get microsoft security essentials. I'm using just MSE and and the basic win 7 firewall on my main computer and it works beatifully. Now that I've been using my old computer again, I've remembered how much I hate these 3rd party softwares. I know many of you think that M$ is unable to release anything good, but it's actually interesting how much microsoft has improved many of it's products in the last couple of years. If I remember correctly, a new version of Internet Explorer actually has the best compatibility with HTML 5, which is almost unheard of. Though at least I'm so badly traumatised by doing web developement during the IE 6 era, that although they are slowly winning over my trust, IE will not overthrow Firefox on my desktop any time soon :)

I got a mail about a week ago where someone had kasperskys(or how you spell it :)) and it too warned that death episode 1 "behaved" like keylogger.

So antivirus software doesn't really like ags games i guess.

Personally I've seen AVG cause massive memory leaks too many times to ever recommend anyone to use it. There's a lot of viruses that slow computers down and cause less damage (base on my personal experience) than AVG.

But different users have different experiences..so I'm sure it works for somebody..somehow.

I used AVG for a good while until about 18 months ago. It just seemed to be slowing everything down so I switched to AVAST (also free) and haven't looked back.

Yeah, thinking of switching from AVG to that, here.
