Title: Backgrounds and sprites for practice
Post by: Alcookie on Sun 15/08/2010 21:49:35
Hello all, I've been looking into developing my own games using AGS (nothing commercial, just between friends and for fun). I'd like to have a try and coding a simple P&C before I start a proper project. However, I am hopeless at designing sprites/backgrounds so I was wondering if there was anywhere that I could obtain some simple 16 bit backgrounds to test.

Thanks.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I wasn't too sure where it should go.

If it's purely for testing purposes (i.e you aren't going to release it) then you could borrow some of the work from the Background Blitz comps in the competition forum.

If you were going to release it then that might annoy the artists and it would make your game look disjointed.

If you just want coding practice, do you really need 16-bit backgrounds?  The Insta-Game resources (http://www.sylpher.com/ig/) were made available with exactly this purpose in mind, but they're in 8-bit indexed color.  (I'd suggest maybe it would be helpful to have 16-bit Insta Game resources, but given that the existing Insta Game resources don't seem to have been added to or updated in more than ten years, and were only ever used in a handful of games, I suppose this isn't likely to happen...)

Isn't there a thread where people donate backgrounds etc that they don't mind other people using? My search kung fu is weak right now though so I can't find it. Maybe it was all just a dream.

Personally, I like to create everything myself as much as possible, even if it looks crap. Just scribble out the basic layout of a background in MSPaint or whatever and you'll have something to test with.

Thanks for the help. These are not for publishing, merely for coding.

Can't go wrong with Reality on the Norm (http://www.realityonthenorm.info/index.php). There's a whole zip of backgrounds (http://www.realityonthenorm.info/downloads/resources/res-bkgd-krysis-090315.zip) waiting to be used.
