You're welcome.

EDIT: What is the problem with exe files?

EDIT: I have downloaded and scanned the above exe file. It doesn't contain a virus. It's safe.

Your registry is corrupt. Thats the only thing I can think of that would prevent you opening installer exe files. Try my advice in the underdogs thread.

Don't open it directly in Firefox, save the file to your harddrive and open it from there.

I have 5 steps for you to get Beneath a Steel Sky and any other game you desire.

1. First, you must throw out all the crap software that came bundled with your most likely Dell, Toshiba, Gateway, or equally manufactered computer. Also get rid of crappy Norton which makes your computer barely useable.

2. Take a computer class, you obviously have no idea what you're doing.

3. Once you take a computer class, get a real firewall and anitvirus suite such as AntiVir and ZoneAlarm.

4. Make sure ZoneAlarm doesn't block common ports and programs you use.

5. Download whatever you want and run it! .EXE files are the meat and potatoes of any windows program. You can't NOT run them, unless you are using linux... And I most highly doubt you are.

I said I DON'T WANT THE TALKIE FILE.

Did you even bother to look at the link?
There is a version with 7.3 MB available ("Beneath a Steel Sky, Freeware Floppy Version (7.3M)") and it's zip so you won't have problems with this, as you said you can handle zip, right?

Yep, I can handle .ZIP files all right, but it's not working without the use of the SCUMM engine. I am not downloading that! But anyway, the file I downloaded had SCUMM already in it.
how else were you expecting to run it?

I don't know actually, I just can't open .EXE files.
You can, otherwise you wouldn't be in windows right now.

To download and run EXE files, you'll have to press 'Save to disc' first, and then open it after it's downloaded.

He's right, Norton is rubbish and takes up far more resources than nessasary, and restricts far too much things.

What do you mean "I am not downloading that!"

Is there anything wrong with ScummVm?

And as Dan said.. how else are you supposed to run it?

Anyway, Beneath a Steel Sky is an awesome game!
And to play it without sound and speech??? :o
How DARE YOU? :P.

Do you have your speakers turned on? Are they plugged in? Does your computer have a sound card?

How... dare... you. How friggin' dare you. You post a thread asking for help, and when everyone jumps on board to give you a bloody hand you spit it back in their face. You don't even say "Oh, that didn't work, is there anything you can suggest?"

QuoteI am not downloading that!
Why not, you'd be able to play the game then.
QuoteTake a computer class.
...Said to someone who could probably teach a computer class.
QuoteNorton is not the problem, nor is it to blame
Ummm, yes it bloody well is. Norton is a shit adware program that boggers your computer right the hell on up. I doubt it even really is finding any viruses, it just wants you to send them your piggy bank for a version that still won't do anything.
QuoteI said I DON'T WANT THE TALKIE FILE!
Spoken like a true temper-tantruming infant. You remind me of a kid in the store whose mum has just bought him a new toy and is whining "But mommy, I want THAT ONE!!!"
QuoteNo, that wasn't the website.
How about, "Oh, that one didn't seem to work. Is there another?"

Would you guys believe that this little cretin found one of my posts from... I don't even know when it was, probably a couple of weeks ago... that said I liked "Ringu" and decided to shoot me a nasty PM to tell me it was a crap movie for no apparent reason? I'm sure you would, given his track record.

Grow up, and don't bother coming back here until you do.

Let's look at the Gen forum rules:
QuotePost in a mature manner. Remember, the minimum age here is 16 - if you're unable to act that age, don't post.

Now, why don't we check out Nefarious' profile:
QuoteAge:     12

Well, at least somebody is acting their age.

Oh, that's him? *checks Nefarious' profile* I guess it is. And how would he even have heard of BASS, it came out before he was born. I think somebody should lock this. Any thread that VD starts just turns into a stupid argument that doesn't benefit anyone.

A word of advice, kid (the kid being VintageDemon, of course): Don't act like the world owes you a favour. If you're having computer troubles, accept each response humbly. Heck, you're lucky people posted in this thread after the nasty things you've said in the past. People are trying to help you (despite what you've done in the past), and like esper said, you spit back in their faces. You have no manners. I don't mean to sound harsh- I was once like you (except you're worse, I think).

That's really crappy. It's beyond n00b-dom. I've had enough of this guy. I'm just going to ignore anything he posts- I suggest most of you do the same. Again and again he posts, asking for help, we give him help, and he treats us like we're at fault. This thread is getting nowhere.

Demon,

Please try and be a little more polite and listen to what people tell you for once. Cause if you don't listen there is little reason for people to be wasting their lifes/time to help you...

I actually have no problem with Norton really... But most people claim that it's shity, and it may very well is, at least it's really heavy... :-\
Download exe files and then run them.
The game needs Scumm engine to run.
You did mention that you don't have Print screen, but there you have a screennie from your computer! Which means that you don't know everything and that there are plenty of things to learn so: LISTEN TO OTHERS (unless you don't trust them, in which case leave the forum).

Finally: Don't start another thread! The gen-gen is not here to help you solve all your problems!

Yeah I got PMs too. Not nasty, just....unbelievably incoherent. And unsettling too, like my entire profile copied and pasted into a PM. It was quite weird.

As for the computer class, forget it! All you need to do is turn on the Help Mode, which is hidden from most users. It is activated by turning off and unplugging your modem or router.

There's a handy option in the profile settings for ignoring PM's.  Every major IM app has some sort of block/ignore feature.  Just as with asinine waste-of-everybody's-time threads, I'm not sure why people keep bumping these things giving somebody a pulpit (smirking at my own hypocrisy as I type this).

He asked for help, and was rude (though a couple of the immediate responses weren't entirely polite).  That's enough reason to ignore the thread.  If it continues to be bumped or new ones started, there's always allowing the situation to be handled by moderators.  If he could just figure out how to interact with people, we might be able to help him (as well as potentially other people).  I for one, am glad for his age.  A 12 year-old trying out an older game? The interest is admirable, and the patience for these is lacking in most 12 year-olds I've met.

To VD: If you retried your question while including each step of your attempt, then people might be able to help versus guessing what you're getting at  (e.g. "Computer has no sound" - all applications or just BASS? Avoid phrases like "Computer won't let me," and try, "I save the file, try to run it and I get an error," or, "It won't let me save it.").

No, but not because you don't deserve it. It's quite understandable that after what you've done that these people would be pissed, and you still have yet to apologize for many of your more grievous transgressions, as far as I can tell (such as the PM spamming, which I fail to see a well-intentioned purpose for). Suck it up. You make mistakes, you get burned for them. Regardless of whether or not that's the way the world should work, that's the way it does work.

We can't help you if you're going to be a sniveling brat. Just because you're 12 doesn't mean you don't deserve what's coming to you. You want to be a big boy and post on big boy forums? Fine, but don't expect to not be treated like a big boy.

It's nothing about your age, dude. You're 12, dude.. You certainly act like it, too. If you can't wrap your head around the fact that you're not the center of the universe and we have no obligation whatsoever to help you, then I think you're on your way to growing up. Until then, get lost.

He has said thank you plenty of times actually (not on MSN, but here), in various places. Othe threads (like the game ideas), he said (kind of) thank you like "eep... I'll change that!"

Just for the record I discussed a bit with him tonight (UK) over MSN, and he promised that he will try to stay away for a while from AGS, to come back later for many reasons:

1. It will give him a chance to relax
2. It will give all of us a chance to relax
3. It will show that he indeed has changed.

so let's forget the whole thing for now. Hopefully he shouldn't appear to reply to this thread (or any other thread actually).

If he does I will be very dissapointed... But in the meantime no reason to keep arguing

He PM'd me with thanks.

I find it funny that some people replying to him were once themselves guilty of starting nonsense threads and PMing people random insults.

It's very easy to gain the argumentative upper-hand when dealing with a 12 year old, and also fairly pointless trying to achieve such.

Granted, his time on the forum has been fairly controversial, and if it's decided that he's a nuisance, I'm sure the mods will take appropriate action.

This canned hunt must end.

VD/Nefarious: STOP POSTING. If you intend to stay on these forums, and contribute in an, if not productive, at least a mature manner, then I advise you to leave for a month or so. Take that time to reconsider how you wish to be perceived by other forumites. At the moment, you are behaving like an idiot troll. You may be neither of these things, but that's the picture you're painting.

Like it or not, at twelve years old you don't have the right to be even on these forums. I'm not picking on you because of your age, but if you persist in behaving like a child then you will be treated like one.

EDIT: I posted this before I saw the (now locked) TVD thread. Most of what I've said has already been covered, so I think an end has come to this discussion.

i once spoke with dave gibbons and he said there were talks of a sequel shortly after the first game, but for whatever reasons it didn't happen.
i'd rather there was never a direct sequel to the game, perhaps some spin-offs like something set at Camp Morrissey or in Hobart City but with a completely different cast of characters.
but no BASS game would be the same without the 2D comic backgrounds, 3D just won't do it justice and it'd probably end up just being another mediocre 3D adventure attempt.
i would, however, love to see some kind of deluxe version of the original with the artwork scanned at a higher resolution and the characters redrawn in a hi-res comic book style, and it would be very awesome if they got the original voice actors to re-record the dialogue. but they should definitely keep the cheesy music the way it is :)
Title: Re: Beneath A Steel Sky
Post by: on Mon 26/02/2007 11:46:16
Charles Cecil also told me circa 2003 that there was a BASS sequel planned, which is far more recent. And he seemed pretty adament that despite it not happening sooner, it was still going to happen, providing he was able to secure the original designers. Although it's probably not a good idea to speculate that there will be one, I wouldn't put it past him to say there won't be - he did seem very keen at the time. I recorded that interview but I can't remember where it is, so it's probably only in-tact in my memory now.

I never realised there was a voice version of BASS, I'd love to play it - because I only ever played the original 4 or so disk version :)

I played an Amiga demo of it with no speech.

Foward to 2006 and I played the full talkie PC version! Hooray finally!

If a new BASS was anything like the last Broken Sword game I'd rather it did not exist.

What was Charles playing at with some of the lame puzzles in "Angel of Death?"

it's the first BS game I've uninstalled from my computer without finishing first.

Sorry it's off-topic!

Maybe it's just because I played the floppy version first, but I absolutely hated the voices in the talkie version. Well, maybe not all of them, but definitely Overmann's. He just seemed completely monotone throughout.

Broken Sword 2 and Bass were the first two adventure games I have played to completion, although the first adventure I ever played was FOA. Revolution are probably the oldest adventure game company that still make adventure games (sort of.)

BASS = Awsome. End of.

PS: I'm glad that, when I was a 13 year old that started on this forum, I didn't act like some of the more famous youths on this forum...

Dunno what strange stuff happened here, but anyone played 2? I've not heard good things about it...

Nah. There seemed to be a bit of hype up to the release and then it all went a bit quiet. I didn’t hear great things either, but I also didn’t hear anything too damning. I suspect it’s a perfectly fine game with little to write home about. I don’t expect many people were expecting to have their minds blown.

I am guessing you might have seen this article already: https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/beyond-a-steel-sky, but those guys rated it quite high. But I agree that I haven't seen anyone talking about it since the release.
