So I worked out a way of identifying which image links in the games database are broken. This page (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/imagecheck/) gives a full list. As you can see, around a third of all games has a broken link, which is unfortunate, and messy looking.
Could everyone who reads this please make sure at very least their own games have valid image links. If you're playing another game that doesn't have a valid image, please take a screenshot and send it to me, and I'll fix it for you. Images should be hosted places that support hotlinking, and are ideally quite reliable (such as agser.me or agsarchives.com. Keeping the hosting within the community should make it a lot more likely to last. A local mirror of the image will also be made on the AGS site every time an image link is updated.
If anyone has any difficulty with this process, please let me know!
Good idea AGA. It's a sad fact that I tend to scroll past games that don't have a screenshot, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So doing this might at least make more people play some of these games.
How about some of us choose a letter of the alphabet and go through them collecting screenshots of the games on that list? I'll be in charge of 'A' if you like.
That's a cunning way of doing it. That way it will only take 26 volunteers to do this properly! Please be sure to mark any broken download links using the link on a game's page too. And post here, to see if anyone like Peder has it in their archives.
So far I'm finding that nearly all of these games' links are broken. But I've still managed to find Screenshots of quite a lot of them via Leon's walkthrough website! The best thing to do is copy and paste this link into the browser and insert the games name with no spaces:
http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/images/gamesnamenospaces-walkthrough.png
since you can indentify game without screenshot now, what do you think about not displaying these games on the startpage within the randomly selected games there? Or would this narrow the number of games shown down too much?
This (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/downloadcheck/) is a list of all the download links that have been marked as broken, by the way.

It now shows a placeholder image where the link's broken. I don't want to completely ignore these games, as this would reduce the publication of so many games.
What is aafiles.bicycle-for-slugs.org?
A lot of the games seem to be (or have been) hosted on there (about 8 just in the A's) but it keeps giving me a scary malware warning.
That is where the original AGS Archives was hosted, before Peder started his version. Pretty sure the files should mostly still be there though?
I got this: http://bicycle.agsarchives.com/ which I think is most of the stuff that was located on that url when it was live. I've not been able to add all the stuff to the main site yet.

Wow, thanks for this!
There were a couple of games I was looking to try out, but the links were broken. Now I'm ready to play!
Berian/Peder, is there internal upload space available of any kind? Screenshots have always been hotlinked, so there is always going to be this problem and always someone chasing it - surely there's some capacity for users to upload 320x200 jpeg files that can be stored locally? Would be kind of nice for AGS to have some sort of internal screenshots rather than rely on the wider web for its image content :) for your consideration..
Please use PNG rather than JPEG. Lossy storage isn't a great fit for a low-resolution image.
Very true! I was just concerned for space, not sure if Berian can allot more than 1mb ;)
this can easily add up on filesize over time, but having them hosted on some AGS servers would really be comfortable and nothing will get lost.
btw is it possible to upload your own thumbnail image for a game rather than have one distorted image generated by the display code?

As far as I understood: With the new page, as soon as you change the screenshot, it is also stored on the server.
oh, now that is nice!
note to self: reading stuff before posting stuff often helps understanding stuff...
Yeah, what cat said.
M0ds, space is not going to be an issue any time soon ;).
I could just as easily have it so users are able to upload directly from their HD OR link to an external source. It'll set that up soon.
^ Cool.
Quoteit is also stored on the server.
But to what end? A URL does not become available to the uploader, nor does the site or database ever call on a mirrored version. Am I missing something?
Anyhoo issue sorted it seems :)
It's meant to be a fallback in case the original link times out. I should probably change that though, since having all images stored locally would be a lot more reliable.
Just a stupid question about my ancient "games".
At least for me the images are all working. Eg:
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1151/
Or are those not eye pleasing enough to count as real images ;)
Yeah I noticed that. I wondered if you had fixed them in the meantime. It's on my notes for the 'A's that I'll be sending to AGA soon.
Oh, that would be pretty lame: fixing the links secretly and asking why they are marked as broken.
From time to time my vserver crashes and it usually takes me a bit until I notice it. But when that happens - all my stuff is offline.
Went through the Princess Marian ones and fixed them.
I just realised that the 'this image is dead' database field doesn't actually get reset when you upload a new image. I'll fix that soon!
Okay, images can now be uploaded either from a URL or from hard disk. This will then be stored locally, rather than on a potentially unreliable external host. I've actually been secretly mirroring people's linked screenshots for months, so there are already 131 images stored locally, which I've now set as the default image.
Broken image links (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/imagecheck/) will now no longer be marked as such when an image is successfully uploaded too.
I checked mine and there's a couple with issues:
I can't edit good santa bad santa for some reason, is that something a mod can fix?

Of course 'Prt Scr' & paste. But my Win7/graphics card only displays games fullscreen at 640x480 & upwards.
If I want to take screenshots at 320x200 (for the respective games / to keep the screenshot file size small), I've to play the game in window mode and use 'AltGr + Prt Scr' and then remove that stupid Win7 window frame afterwards...and yeah, I'm lazy! ('F12' was an attempt in XP coz for some reason 'Prt Scr' didn't seem to do the job)
My game 'Alan Saves Christmas' is on the list, but the screenshot is showing up fine for me. I've not edited its entry recently. Any ideas?
Ah, right. Yes, taking screenshots of old skool low res games on newer versions of Windows is a pain. There's probably some clever software that will only capture window contents though. What about Greenshot (http://getgreenshot.org/)? I'm at work currently, so I can't test it out, but it sounds like it might be suitable.

Might just be it wasn't loading at some particular moment for someone, so they chose to mark it as broken. Hosts, even big ones like Google Pages, can be randomly inaccessible sometimes. I've put the image on the server and set the flag as unbroken now anyway.
Going over my games and adding threads now. The screenshots seem to be OK.
I would like to change one of my games from 'demo' to 'full game' (since it is fully released now) but under the edit options I am unable to do that.
Also, may I make the following suggestion for the layout of the games.php page? I think this would make the credit sections easier to read (while still taking up less than half of my screen width)
Which one of your games? There are millions of them! We did discuss a while ago that people should be able to change the categories of their own games, but I never got around to doing it; I'll sort that out later.
The redesign would make sense, and would save some space. I'll fiddle with the styling later.
Here are the 'A' games:
Key:
Link broken M - means the link in the database is broken and already marked as such.
Link broken U - means the link in the database is broken but not yet marked as such.
Link malware - means the link brought up a malware or other warning.
(where possible I have provided the link to the games page on AGSArchives unless the existing link is fine)
No screenshot available - means that I could not find a screen nor a [working] copy of the game to take a screen from.
Screenshot already in place - in some cases, games actually do have screenshots despite being on the list.
The format is like this:

I think next time I'm going to use a Google Spreadsheet. I did this in Notepad and it was a real faff.
I prefer to use 'print screen' as opposed to taking screenshots within the game because I think the cursor is part of the game, especially if the game's makers have designed some pretty cursors. Surely that is all part of what is being showcased in the screenshot.
Spreadsheets are always a good idea. It's a lot easier to automatically import things to the database that way, which avoids having to go through and make so many changes manually. It's fine though, I can do some exploding (http://php.net/manual/en/function.explode.php) to work with the info.
Okey doke. I'll make a start on 'B' then, using Google spreadsheet.

ARRRRRHHHH! I'm working on it, I'm working on it, Stu!
The 'L' section - pah! - more like mental vivisection ATM!!
MENTAL I TELL YAAAAAAA!!! (wtf)
Need some POINTERS how to run old AGS games in WINDOW MODE!
(Greenshot is cool, but it only captures the desktop 'behind' the running fullscreen AGS game/ Native 'Prt Scr' function doesn't do anything!)
(Win7 64bit - obviously - no use here!)
(Win XP 32 - disabling 'visual designs' in properties and adding 'windowed=1' in the acsetup.cfg does nothing - game still runs full-screen!)
Some cursing and gnashing of teeth isn't really helping either...well, the cursing helps somewhat!
Also: AARRRRHHHHHHHH! F%$##co@§$beep%&?§##beep#o#*cr@$!
I just ran a script that copied all of the valid external image links in the games database to the server. This means that all (non broken) images should from now on be stored locally, and all images added in future will too. This should remove the possibility of dead images ever existing again! Now to get the games database tied into AGS Archives so the same thing happens there.
Tramponline, have you tried DosBox?
Yeah, I'm fairly sure that'd work, Radiant - the 'L' section just contains quite a few of those games and
I was kind of hoping for a less 'cumbersome' approach. :cheesy:
Oh, well, off we go then...*sigh*
Hey Tramponline, did you see my post above about using Leon's walkthrough site (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/category/walkthrough/) to find some of the screenshots. He covers a lot of AGS games on there, especially the older ones, and most (if not all) of them come with a screenshot.
I've found that (in the As for example) by the time I'd found all the screenshots either on Leon's site or on AGSArchives, there only remained a small handful of games that I actually had to run myself to grab a screenshot from. I still tested all the links but I didn't need to actually download all the games.
Thanks, Stupot. I wasn't sure whether it was OK to 'hotlink' those screenshots on Leon's site, but since they're mirrored & stored locally as well...
That brings me roughly 50% closer to my aim. That 'L' section is jinxed!
(Chose that category mainly because I really loved "Laura Bow in: The Road to Murder" (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/590/), way, way back.)
Any help needed here? I've got over 90% of the games pre 2010 (with screenshots if played). If I haven't got a screenshot, I still need to play it and can make a screenshot along the way. I use a number of emulators to play the oldies. I'd like a list of the games post 2010 to complete my own list (I missed a few years :embarrassed: )
I have 2.3GB of crap in my 'Underground Games' folder by the way, if anyone is desperately searching for anything pre about 2008. I know there's a missing games thread somewhere, but I honestly don't pay any attention to it.
Leon, take a look at this (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/allgames/4/date/desc) (and its preceding pages). If that doesn't work, I can probably hack something together eventuallyâ,,¢
Well... I've about 11Gb of 'old' stuff. :-[
I have the complete 'bycicle' mirror (about 7Gb), and so does Peder now, and more, gathered from all over the web. I do keep track of the Missing Games thread so if there are requests I jump in. I'll try to catch up with the newer ones though according to the database list. Problem is though that there are also games in the 'completed games' thread that are not in that list so I have to scan them both... :-\
Is there still help needed with the missing images?
I wonder whether I could make it a necessity to link to a games page entry when you start a new thread in Completed Game Announcements... Hmm...
35% of all the games in the database (500+) still have dead images, so please feel free to jump in and help! Just pick a letter no one else has claimed, and get going.
There are 1499 games in the database right now by the way. Wonder who'll get the milestone 1500th? Not that the games page IDs line up of course, as some games have been deleted in the meantime; the next id added will actually be 1682.

Of course! Take your pick with any additional letter of games with missing screenshots in the database (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/imagecheck/)!?
I'm fine now though, thanks Leon. I took some screenshots out of your database, that helped to ease
the load quite a lot.

I wonder whether I could make it a necessity to link to a games page entry when you start a new thread in Completed Game Announcements... Hmm...
That'd be great. Too late though!
Then that 'Gilbert' dude wouldn't have forgotten to put his games in the database! (wrong)
Then I'd finally get my credit for testing 'Primordia' and it would've been eligible for the AGS awards and all that...AND...
Do I just create a list with links to the images in the format you did or do I update the database directly?
Here's a list (xls) (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/ags.xls) with all the games, their respective database ID's and the links to my pictures. Maybe it'll help speed up things?
That gave me a cunning idea. I've added Leon, Stupot and Trampoline to a special group that will allow them to edit games game entries. You should all get an 'edit this page' link on every page, so you can just update them yourselves. Cuts out the middleman! If anyone else wants to join in, please let me know and I'll set them up.
Please note that every action you make on the games page is logged, so I will know in the unlikely event one of you goes mad and starts abusing this newfound power :P

Eeek. I don't quite agree with this. There's a few games that people post in the completed games section that they don't quite want on their games list record. To my knowledge, Ben304 has released a few games in the completed games thread but didn't make a games page addition. Likely because they were Oceanspirit games, and in all seriousness, OSD games are a joke (*gasp* blasphemy!).
People shouldn't make silly games then! If not mandatory, it could at least be an option. Might encourage those people who may forget to otherwise to do it.
That's why my list (see above) only has 'real' adventure games. No demo's, no joke games etc. I think it should be the producers choice whether to add it to the database and up to us (the players) to track it. We can only encourage them to add it to the db as well to give more exposure to their product.
[edit]
Hmm.. trying to add an image for 'Wet' but it keeps telling me that I have to fill out all mandatory fields. As far as I can see all has been done.?
If there's no one credited for the game, or the file size is zero it won't like it. If you can't work out the person's forums username, you can just copy the 'author' information from further up, and leave the credits blank, like "author: " and it'll work.
The earlier games like Wet often don't have credits, because I think that feature was hacked in after the initial database driven system was created.
Some more intelligent error reporting would probably be a good idea, I'll think about doing that at some point.
Figured it out: the game size can't be 0. Make it 1 and it'll work and show as 0Mb on the games page.
I really should run a database query to convert all those stupid base ten kB calculations to just use MB. I'll add it to the list!
While you're at it... just cosmetic: story & price are mandatory fields according to the asterix. Should shift up to genre & story. Like said, just cosmetic.
I realised that the "image zoom feature" (clicking on those screenshots in each game entry) only seems to work for screenshots with resolutions
of 640x400 and above (I assume this function just shows them in their native res.?).
Is there any way to enhance/upscale 320x200 screenshots when you click on those? Considering modern-day monitor resolutions one can hardly make out those
sceenies without zoom.
Images are scaled down in browser to 320x200 on the game's page, and show at native res in the popup, yes.
I could look into scaling up. Pixel art can look atrocious if it's scaled up badly though, so it might not be the best idea.
Why scale them? I work at 1280x1024 and it's no problem. These shots are to give you an impression of the art that's used, not HQ details of the game. I think it works fine with the small size. The bigger the images, the more storage you need, the longer it takes to load, the more bandwidth you use etc...
No no Leon. It still has the original game resolution, just upscales in your browser so you can actually see it (like the x2, x3 filter).
Also AGA, just use the nearest neighbor resizing instead of smooth scaling.
Yeah, I just meant 320 x 200 to double size 640 x 400. That way you would be able to at least read on-screen text etc.
That pop-up zoom function as it is now doesn't really make any sense for 320 x 200 res.:
You see a 320 x 200 image, you click on it and it pops to ...320 x 200??
Exactly, what Ryan says.
There's actually a system (that's not currently working, for some reason) that creates 320x200 thumbnails of each image as it's uploaded. That would actually make pages load that much quicker. Not that that's really a problem in these days of high speed connections, but efficiency is always good!
But yeah, scaling up low res pixel art does seem a bit weird to me. It should be appreciated at the size it was drawn! I could maybe have a little JavaScript dynamic scaler function the way imgzoom tag on the forums work, which would let people choose if they really want to scale up.
EDIT: what you said!
Hi, I'd like to help. Give me the editing rights and I'll take care of F (at least part of it). Is there any preference for the type of screenshot? If there is a title screen, should we capture that, or something actually in-game?
AGSarchives.com: http://agsarchives.com/games.html (http://agsarchives.com/games.html) ...good place to start.
Leon's website with many, many game solutions & screenshots: http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/category/walkthrough/ (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/category/walkthrough/)
Also Leon set up an Excel document, where the games & screenshots on his site are listed: http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/ags.xls (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/ags.xls)
If you find screenshots of your particular games on the aforementioned sites, perfect.
If not, check if the game links work, download & play them and take screenshots.
The download links of some games might be broken and older ones can be hard to find.
One good source for older AGS games:
Old repository from Peder: http://bicycle.agsarchives.com/ (http://bicycle.agsarchives.com/)
Screenshots preferably in PNG format.
I tried to take each screenshot in the game's native resolution.
In-game shots are better and those that are representative for the game, or funny, or scary or etc.
(updating dead download links on the way would be nice too)
Doesn't really matter whether the screenshots are in png or not, since other formats get converted to high quality jpg.
Perhaps, it might be a good idea to redirect that banner link to your first post and update it with all the resources posted in this thread
and some instructions? Not sure...

That doesn't seem like a good idea. Screenshots of AGS games will almost always be low resolution, if not pixel art, and these display much, much better (and much lighter) in PNG.
In cases where the 'download this game' link is broken, and we can supply the AGS Archive link, do you guys think it is better to link it to the Archive's 'gamecard' page or link it directly to the zip so it downloads the game without going to another page? I know fixing screenshots is the main purpose of this operation, but I'm hoping to fix some links as well and that was something I was wondering about.
P.S I'll have a good session on this tomorrow. Lets make that list shrink. Thanks for the access AGA, that will make things easier.
Link to the 'download' link, rather than the actual file, I'd say.
Okay, that's my feeling too but I thought I'd see what you and others reckoned.
I would expect the opposite. When I click 'download', I want to download the game, not swap to another page with details about the game.

I used the alternative that AGA suggested so far, I linked neither file itself nor gamecard, but the 'AGSarchive download link':
That way:
You click on download in our database --> it changes to AGSarchives.com --> download pops up immediately & automatically.

Me neither. Maybe AGA granted admin rights on a per day basis?
...or someone of us broke so much in the database that he had to put everything on hold ...
*sneaks off to hide*
You can't actually link directly to the file on AGSA anyway, I'd have to agree with Radiant and say the best way is to use the "download link" so you don't have to click download twice.
After all, this is one of the reasons I wanted to start AGSA in the first place, to avoid all the extra waiting/clicking that most file hosts force you to do.
It is agreed then, we use the "AGSarchives.com download button link" as download link adress for the AGS game database. (if the particular game is available at AGSarchives.com, that is!)
To everyone that is watching this thread and willing to help out:
You don't actually need admin rights to be able to contribute something. Just choose a few games on the list (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/imagecheck/) (e.g. games beginning with the letter 'E' etc.) and open some kind of document where you copy the screenshot/download link for each game. Either you or us can copy&paste those into the database later on.
(just quickly post what letter you chose, to avoid that two people are doing one letter...eh...sounds kind of kinky.)

Sorry all, I was fiddling with the site source late last night, and accidentally removed the group you're all in from the admin list in my tired state. Should work again now?
I will actually update the lists people have given me soon, I promise!
I'll reiterate that I'm doing the Fs. I'm making an excel file similar to the one Stupot posted. I'll post mine in a bit.
OK, I will cover the I,J,K section.
I'll move on to the S and down....

Type in:
"
Tildy: Author" or "Creator" or "Author of the game" not sure what's more appropriate??? (game creators can edit it later to their liking)

That way Tildy would be able to edit the entry too.

As for the "Editing game failed", that's because there is no author in the bottommost field or the weight is 0. Change these and it should work.

Then you will also be able to make an account, claim your games and start editing/adding.
I can't give a date for when I think it will be done, but I hope to get it done fairly soon!
okay, I was going to start out from the very bottom and it starts bad. The 2 Zelda dance remix games are unavailable (and were rated 1cup), then the wretcher demo has a screenshot already and is still in the list... then all other W games are not available anymore :(

if the download link for a game is broken, is it best to just delete the link and the page will display the download unavailable message? Even though the red asterix makes me think it's not possible to update the game data without a link...
I ignored the games that were unavailable in the 'L' section as well. Not such a bad thing, since in the end we should end up with a list
of games that can't be found around the Net.
From there people could search for ancient game skeletons in their 'harddrive closet'.

Yeah, I'm at the S now... I'll dig a bit deeper into the remaining games to see what I can find in my own archive. The question is what to do with the ones we can't find/don't exist anymore?

Hm, I was able to update the download link, but when trying to upload a new screenshot I got first an error that I can't use bmp and then when uploading a png a "Editing game failed."
And when you fill in the author at the field at the bottom like "name: author" you should be able to save the changes.

I couldn't do the following because of broken download links:
Kill Davy Jones (demo) by FSi - I contacted FSi but he currently doesn't have a copy. Thanks Peder!
King Of Rock - was on bicycles but is not in Peders archive
Kiselyova Unleashed!
Klaus Kerner and the Fate of Atlantis

Ms.
- I couldn't find these:
- Matt and James Amazing Game For Everyone (candidate for deletion?)
- Meaning Quest DEMO (candidate for deletion?)
- Mimis the rat
- My 40 bullets (v1.1)
As for "Mittens Mystery Extravaganza", the main link is dead, the mirror links to a suspicious download of 7Zip (I didn't try it).
What shall I do about Cosmos Quest? It seems the author tried deleting everything including his own name from the game page. (I remember he was a bit of a controversial chappy). But the games do still exist on AGSA. Should I try to repair these pages or just delete the database entries and let them exist on AGSA?
I think we should really remove both. If the owner clearly wanted the game removed, their wishes should be respected. We'll always have people like Peder and Leon to reupload the game if it comes to that!
As far as I remember he removed the game because of the panel rating. There is no such rating on AGS Archives so I'd keep it there.
Okay I deleted them from the DB. The pages were basically blank slates with the word 'deleted' dotted about everywhere, so I'm sure he would have deleted them properly himself if he'd been able. I think it would be nice to keep them on AGSA though. It is an archive after all. And Good point Cat.

if the download link for a game is broken, is it best to just delete the link and the page will display the download unavailable message? Even though the red asterix makes me think it's not possible to update the game data without a link...
Leave it there for now. It can give clues in which archives to search for a copy of the game. Eventually they could all be removed.
He personally contacted me back then to have them added to AGS Archives so I won't be deleting them from there.
When it comes to AGSA and games none will ever be permanently deleted, but if the author of a game for any reason don't want the game to be available any more, it can be disabled.
Nice! So far we seem to have covered: #,A,B,C,_,_,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,_,_,_,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z
If some of these are still in the list, it probably means they are either leftovers (i.e. games that are unavailable) or the changes haven't been administered yet.
That seems to leave us with those games starting with D, E, P, Q, R? (...never payed much attention watching Sesame Street though!)
Not absolutely clear about the S through Z section though. Leon and selmiak probably know more...
edit: I'll go with R (down) if that's OK. (Though I definitely wouldn't mind if someone wanted to help out and go bottom-up in R )
And maybe try some of the games in the "vanished" section - though at least half of those seem to be games by FSI++! :cheesy:
I'll take care of D and E today if it's still available
Ok, then I go for P
Yep, at the moment it S and downwards (T-Z is mostly done).
Someone else mentioned before about demos. Last night i counted nearly 30 of those games still on the list were demos. I think if screenshots cant be found for them and the download links dont work, it might be worth clearing them out. Especially if they are more than say 6 or 7 years old and there is no sign that the full game is still being worked on.
P.S. O is basically done, but there are a couple I need to sort out still.
What is actually the difference between agsarchives and new.agsarchives? Can I use both?
new. is where new design / feature tests are run, I believe. The database should be the same, but it's probably better to use the main URL just to be sure.
Finished P
Phoenix 1 fixed the screenshot but the DL link is broken
Princess Marian VIII has a working screenshot and DL but is still in the list: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/656/
pSyCHo!@! - link broken, not in archive
Is is possible to get a list of all games with broken download link? I think we should fix that too.
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/downloadcheck/. This only shows games where the download has been reported as broken though. Automatically checking all the links the way I did the images would take far too long.
I'm confused, these are two completely different and unrelated game demos, aren't they?
In the database: Red Dwarf Demo (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/878/) by Dan_N released in 2007
In the In-Production thread: Red Dwarf: The Game (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=40312.0) by Blobby 101, Demo released 2010

From the other letters in the list I'm sure I still have some games so if everyone's finished I can have a go at the list again?

Ahh, darn, I totally forgot to report broken ones as broken - but on the other hand the rest of the list we get should indicate unavailable games anyhow, no? :embarrassed:
I couldn't find the following (most have an AGSA page with link "coming soon"):
Day of School
Deepbright Demo
Deflus Technical Demo
Demonslayer 1
Der verschwundene Husky
Domestic Conspiracy Demo
drugs and aliens
Enter The Story
Ernie's Big Adventure II
Everlight Forest Demo v1.1
Everlot-Demo
D.Jones: Deceased
These I couldn't get to work:
Deepbright Demo
Demonslayer 1
I am currently trying to download and get a screenshot for these (my connection keeps dropping them whenever they're almost done, but I'll get there):
Der verschwundene Husky
Ernie's Big Adventure II
Finally, this one should be deleted, since it's basically simply an ad for a web site. I know one of their games, "Dante's Divine Comedy", has its own page, so they can create pages for each game. Can I delete this (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1123/)?:

edit: Ah, these are DOS-games, that's why they don't work, you need DOS-box and some additional files for those.
I can edit those two if you like, Narushima?
Just one more thing: some of the games were very old and wouldn't run on my computer in their native setup. And setup wouldn't run too :P
So what I did was copying the acsetup.cfg from another game.

Please do. I tried running them through DOSBox but I lacked the patience to hunt down the needed files.
If there are multiple entries for a game, please let me know the details so I can merge the download counts and such for the two. Please don't delete anything without consulting me!
I'm not deleting anything :-\
I know I have Verschwundene Husky and Ernie's Big Adventure. You can get the screenshots from my server :)
If there are any problems getting games to start let me know. I've got several emulators that I'm sure will be able to run the game. If not, I can always set up my trusty DOS 3.2 machine :-D
I'm now done with D and E. All that's left is the ones I listed in my post above.
EDIT: I came across this game (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/655/), which has a placeholder image. I'm going to replace it with an actual screenshot, but I guess that's something we cant' really deal with efficiently. It's probably not very common anyway.
EDIT2: nevermind, I won't be replacing it, the game doesn't work.
I think that isn't a placeholder, that it's a 'this image is now gone' image host message. But given the game doesn't run because the ac2game.dta file is missing, there's not much we can do.

I've got one, not with multiple entries per se, but a demo (which isn't available) while the full game is in the database as well:
DEMO: Lost In The Nightmare - Demo (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/473/)
FULL GAME: Lost In The Nightmare v1.1 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/642/)
We could ask the author Gord10 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=1336) whether he'd be OK with deleting the DEMO, or if he wants to
upload a working demo game file?
The better idea might be for me to put in a thing that makes it clear the full game is now available, and that people should play that instead (unless they're totally completist and also want to play the demo!). Having the date and number of downloads of the demo is a nice historical record, I think.
Just found Chicken Fraction. Made a screenshot & updated the download link.
I marked a link a broken and was surprised how fast this went through. Just to avoid abuse of some jerk hating your game and marking the downloadlink as broken I want to suggest to change this a bit to either
wait for at least 2 people to report a link as broken and then mark it broken
and/or have a sign up for 'link reported as invalid' and still link to the destination anyways
or have for example the image uploaders see a message that the a link was reportet as broken and have them confirm this and then mark it as broken without a link.
tackled the Q games except one which is unavailable.
If I'm not mistaken, we're through then. The rest of this list are the 'unavailables'.
Now we just have to check if we've got any of those long forgotten games on our computers.
Or the game creators, of course - and Leon!
...it's so much more rewarding to play with the 'Lucky Dip' option in the DB now. Can't stop pushing that button... :=

Whoops, didn't realise marking a link as broken actually disabled the link. Changed it so the link will still show, it'll just also appear on the downloadcheck list.
Awesome work on the updating, everyone. You've saved me weeks of work! If everyone could look through their game archives to see if we could reupload some stuff, I think we'll be complete!
Good work everyone. I've been out today so couldn't help out, but we've butchered that imagecheck list.
Now to get fixing those links. I tried to fix as many as I could as I went along with the screenshot mission, but that's barely scratching the surface.
We really need to go through and check every game.
The ratings panel has tried to keep the broken download list as up to date as we could. A lot of games we marked as broken are still currently broken as far as I can tell. The number of as yet unmarked broken downloads should be relatively small.
I'm currently trying to get the backlog of games requiring ratings reduced, and marking any new broken links accordingly. There's a bunch of those currently broken links that need fixing, though, so dive in! Just go to the database game list and sort by panel rating (ascending). A lot of the broken links will show up. :)
Quote from: LimpingFish on Sun 12/05/2013 23:51:48The number of as yet unmarked broken downloads should be relatively small.
Not the case. Based on the games I covered for this thread, I'd say of all those whose links were broken only about a fifth were already marked as such.
I've seen more 404 and 'sorry, cannot be found' screens this week than the rest of last year put together :)
I fixed as many as I could as I went along though.
Well, to be honest, there is no follow up work done on links. If a download worked at the point in time it was checked, then it remained a working link. Various factors, such as the demise of shutupload.com and Megaupload, will result in previously working links turning up as broken.
Taking these factors into account (the number of download links being relatively small was based on the number of games which had never been officially checked, and not the entire database), I would agree that we could be looking at a more significant percentage. :(

That game is in the AGSarchives.com database though and can be downloaded.
As we discussed though, I think if a game author deliberately makes a game unavailable in the official AGS database, that should be respected. Offsite stuff like AGS Archives is fine though. So essentially, The Find demo should be removed.
However, I think I'll rework this a bit, to allow game authors to disable their own games. The game wouldn't be permanently deleted, it would just be made invisible to the game playing public, so the author could go back if they changed their mind.
EDIT: okay, done that, and marked The Find demo as unavailable.

Unless you let all downloads point to your own server, there's not much you can do. I'm sure I've updated Legend of Rovendale with a screenshot and a working download, not necessarily to agsarchives.
It would be easy(ier) to check if the download doesn't point to your own archive. Just list the ones that don't and correct them. Then you'll be left with the ones you don't have and mark them as unavailable.
btw: I have "The 7 Doors" on in my archive somewhere... It's not on agsarchives either, but I know it's around somewhere.

You can actually edit the Panel Rating, not that you should really do so without very good reason. Just click the "AGS Panel Rating" hyperlink (which is not a hyperlink for normal users). That page also lets you set the download and image links as broken / valid, just in case changing the link the other way didn't change that flag anyway (which shouldn't happen!). I should probably eventually just unify these things into one page, with different options depending on your user level, but that's a job for another day!

Indeed. (nod)
As a panel member, I'd ask that
no alterations to panel ratings or comments be made. Having so many people with access to database has the potential to cause some confusion, though I'm sure everybody is contributing their changes in good faith.
Panel activity has been less that stellar over the last twelve months, despite ProgZmax's attempts to kick-start it, but I've been rating a number of titles over the last few days, and I expect this will help us reduce our backlog. Once that's done, we should see an more enthusiastic panel that can add ratings to future releases within a reasonable time-frame.
OK, worked through the Broken Link List (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/downloadcheck/) bottom-up, from "'Adventure Game' demo" to "Guy Slug: Private Eye".
All games from the bottom up to (and including) "Guy Slug" are either completely unavailable or we need to post this list when it's done somewhere, as quite a few author's are still around, some signed in even today. PMed a few, will PM the rest in this segment tomorrow. If someone else wants to have a go, from "Guy Slug: Private Eye" upwards.... :cheesy:
There's still the other List of UNAVAILABLE GAMES (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/imagecheck/), if anyone finds one of these games on their harddrive(s)...let someone else know!
edit: I'm an idiot, I fixed Guy Slug! (wrong)(therefore it's gone from the list) From "Greg's Mountainous Adventure [MAGS]" on upwards...!
Found some stuff under layer 48...
The McReed Case: Interrogation BETADEMO (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/files/MRC2_Betademo.zip)
I have no clue what the two tales of Chickenry (Chickerny/Chicenrey) are. However, I found a file called "Tales Of Chickenry Chapter 1.rar" (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/files/Tales%20Of%20Chickenry%20Chapter%201.rar) which was twice the size of the one I already had. Inside that rar were two files:
- Tales of Chickenry Installer(all voices are done by Yotam Elal).exe
- Tales_of_Chickenry_Installer.exe
I'm pretty sure that these are the two files you're looking for. I'm not sure how to register these in the db though. There are minor differences in the application (control panel is different and in the one done by Yotam you can walk with mouse movement instead of keys alone) but gameplay is exactly the same.
Also found The Parrot Snatchers (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/files/Parrot%20Snatchers,%20the.rar)
Awesome, Leon. My PM to Grim about "The Parrot Snatchers" is kind of redundant then.
The broken link list (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/downloadcheck/) is done. Contacted those authors that were still active in the last 12 - 18 month or so.
I asked them to post the links to their games in this thread too. That way Peder or you could grab some missing ones too.
We should maybe merge both lists and post it in the GAMESEEK thread.
...and quickly too, before anyone manages to put more error reports in there!!! NOOOOOO!
My entire entry for Troopers Tech Demo can be deleted, neither me nor anybody I know has the game anymore, there is no image either and it's 7-8 years old and way outdated anyways.
The first entry (2 Dennis, 1 Bug) can be deleted as well. According to the MAGS thread of dec 2011 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=44905.0), there's never been a successful release of this (controversial) game.
I just noticed that there is an invalid pic for http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1176/ (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1176/).
I tried to replace the image link with the screenshot from the agsarchive, but it would not work. The new link is not stored.

That happened to me before. AGA suggested to clear my browser cache and it worked (i.e. the image was already updated, I just couldn't see it). He was wondering why I tried to upload the same image over and over again... :cheesy:
Not sure if it's the same problem though. (usually happens when an image had been stored locally already)
I'm seeing an image for that. Judging by the title Glitch Quest, I'm assuming it's supposed to look like that hehe.
That same thing happened to me on one occasion too, but I played around with the image, resizing it and such, and it eventually worked. Wasn't sure what caused it though.
I still don't see the image, it should look like this:
Do you see the correct pic?
Yep, we see it! See!?
If that happens I usually just close my browser, when I sign back in I can see the image...

Sorry, all those games, including the project files are on an older hard drive which has since died. I'd guess the best solution would be to, if possible, delete the entries off the AGS server.

They both suggested deleting the entries, which would be kind of sad though. (Besides someone might still have a copy somwhere!?)

However, I think I'll rework this a bit, to allow game authors to disable their own games. The game wouldn't be permanently deleted, it would just be made invisible to the game playing public, so the author could go back if they changed their mind.
Maybe we could disable the corresponding entries, rather than deleting them?
The games in question are:
Zelda Dance Remix (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/808/)
Zelda Dance Remix II (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/812/)
Bang Bang You're Dead (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/780/)
Dan Finds His Beard (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/746/)
Happy Birthday, Zemp (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/936/)
I hope I didn't miss any...?
I did set up the disabling thing, at least from my perspective (the user side can wait!). I've now disabled those five. The entries will still be in the db with all the original info if the authors ever want to reenable them.

By pure chance I discovered that Space (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/16/) had no valid URL (it was the old "bicycle.for.slugs", or something). I updated it and realized that the archive available here (http://bicycle.agsarchives.com/full/) contains another game, called "Trapped with hell" (although the archive and enclosed folder ae named "Rich Psycho). It barely qualifies as a game and I don't know who did it, but it doesn't appear anywhere else as far as I can tell. So what do we do with that?

Done also.
OK, I uploaded the two versions of "Tales of Chickenry" from Leon and placed them according to the author's info in those entries.
They're both installer versions, perhaps they need to be extracted & recompressed at some point - my priority for now was to make them available again: [edit: Ah, just saw Peder uploaded the keyboard-controlled version to AGSarchives.com already.]
Differences between those two versions:
"Tales of Chickenry Chapter I (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/743/)" Download: http://205.196.123.196/omuj0jpm4dvg/u50636nmooc0zph/Tales+of+Chickenry+Installer%28all+voices+are+done+by+Yotam+Elal%29.exe (http://205.196.123.196/omuj0jpm4dvg/u50636nmooc0zph/Tales+of+Chickenry+Installer%28all+voices+are+done+by+Yotam+Elal%29.exe)
- Additional point & click mouse mode for walking.
- Mouse-over tooltip
- All characters & narrator voiced by Yotam Elal.
[This version's entry won't accept a different screenshot. Wanted to show the 'walk mode mouse cursor' to exemplify the difference to the other version. This time it doesn't seem to be the browser cache - but not that important anyway.]
"Tales of Chickenry (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/805/)" Download: http://205.196.121.43/ouzs0p3aojng/6cuwaifww4c2wc1/Tales_of_Chickenry_Installer.exe (http://205.196.121.43/ouzs0p3aojng/6cuwaifww4c2wc1/Tales_of_Chickenry_Installer.exe)
- Keyboard-controlled character movement
- Characters voiced by various actors/ No narrator
Thought I post those if anyone wants to grab those for their database and such...
It is important, since it's behaving a way it shouldn't! :P
Could you upload the image you wanted to apply, so I can work out why it isn't working?

Hello, fixed my game Rufus, the download should now work. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/dqe6zsme0kiv2tp/Rufus_1.3.rar)
Thanks for letting me know!
/BlueAngel
AGA, now that we've basically fixed all the games which could be more or less easily found online, maybe you should create a new thread (or change this one's first post) with a link in the forum header, as it is now, giving the list of games with broken downloads and explicitly asking players and programmers if they've got a copy?
Basically that's a good idea. We need to combine the "Broken Image Link list" (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/imagecheck/) and the "Broken Download Link" list (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/downloadcheck/) (some overlap) and post it somewhere.
(I compiled a list, minus the duplicates, in LibreOffice Calc, but it doesn't make much sense to post it here, as the list won't contain the respective links.)
However, most of these games (not all!) are in the 'hardcore' unavailable category - Arj0n posted almost the exact same list of games (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=29796.msg557989#msg557989) for the AGS Archives a while ago.
Some were found or sorted out, but most of them are still gone.
It'd be invaluable IMO to have the authors' names/usernames included in this list, as there seems to be no other option than to contact them directly. (Would this be possible with some of your database trickery, AGA?)
I'm refering more to e-mail rather than PM, as most of these people haven't been around for quite a while.
This way we'd be able to ask those who do answer, but who don't have a copy anymore, whether it makes sense to deactivate certain entries (from public view)?
Most of these authors don't seem to have an e-mail-link in their profiles - that means only longterm members, who are still in contact (or have been) with those game creators can reach them.
Just some thoughts, very much open for discussion.
Ahh, what the heck, I post 'em anyway:

I think, to extrapolate on something AGA said earlier, these entries should simply be hidden from the general database user, until (if ever!) working links are found. Having a dedicated thread, to allow people to continue working on the task at hand, along with keeping the database entries hidden, will result in a leaner database and negates the need for tinkering until updates are ready.
By the way, that's a substantial list! 8-0
So before I disable all the games that have either a broken image or a broken download link, can I just check that still having a broken image link means the download link is also broken (so nobody was able to download it and create their own screenshot)?
I've edited the imagecheck and downloadcheck pages to include a link to PM the author on the forums, or to email them. This obviously only applies where someone has been credited for the game, which isn't always the case. I also added http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/bothcheck/, which only shows games where BOTH image and download links are marked as broken. All these pages are now only accessible by games pages updaters, since there's private email addresses included.

Yes, I went through those once more and re-checked. Provided of course, no one reported 'new' broken images - but as far as I can see, those have been fixed as well.
I'm sorry, but I'm just not quite sure about the disabling thing yet: There're still some requests and messages to game creators (that still frequent the forums now!) in limbo and we're awaiting their responses. I suppose they should still be able to edit their entries (maybe I'm misunderstanding something).
RaGG and Layabout for example and others.
Yes. The entries become disabled to the general visitor or member but the creators can still enable/edit.
Some of the games have a panel rating, so I guess someone of the panel might have one of them?
Just for my information, how are these broken download links detected? I've tried for instance The Paramecium Complex (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/650/) and it leads to a broken link, although it's not in your list. Besides, how are you going to keep track of these in the future for new games? When the download link refers to a html page instead of a direct download, the broken link won't be noticed until you go to that page and click the download link there, to find it's not available.
Like I said in a previous reply, the only way to overcome this is to make sure all downloads, after being put up by the author, are redirected to your own (backup)server. Then all you have to do is check which links don't point to your own server and correct them, including a copy of the download. A positive side effect is that the game will always be available and the links won't die in the future (unless the server crashes of course).
Quote from: AGA on Sun 12/05/2013 12:07:20
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/downloadcheck/. This only shows games where the download has been reported as broken though. Automatically checking all the links the way I did the images would take far too long.
The broken download links list contains only reports from users/members as far as I know. In each entry the link '
If the download link or mirror link doesn't work, please report it.' --> then confirm broken link.
I'd suggest let's fix as many as we can for now and then discuss how that might be avoided in the future. (e.g. Some kind of automated e-mail posting system once screenshot links and download links are reported as broken and confirmed(!) to be broken or something similar. Storing them locally etc. and so on and so forth)
On a kind of related note, I got 5-6 wrongly reported broken download links - the download sites just took a while to load the file and/or you had to click a button or enter captcha and such.
edit: Though I do agree with you Leon. In order to make this effort seem lesser like "Sisyphus playing ball with the rock", it'd be very, very usefull if someone would be able to update the AGSarchives storage database alongside. Especially, for the 'long lost' games section - some games people were able to recover (now & before), but files on outside servers will continue to expire, those games will disappear again and we can start all over again. (Please, don't get me wrong Peder, I know you're updating the database and I know nothing about the 'background logistics', it just seems like a Herculean task (OK, OK, enough with that Greek stuff already!!).
There are plans for local storage, and AGS Archives integration. That will be no small task though, so don't hold your breath!

But like AGA mentioned, there are plans of integrations hence I'd actually like to prioritize getting the user side of the new AGSA build done first so we can start on the integration. Then I'll be able to set up a similar system to what AGA has done on the AGS site and anyone interested in helping out can start uploading games/screens where they are either missing or broken in the db.

Would it be possible to automate this? For instance, a script could automatically open all URLs and see which ones (1) return either a 404 or a Domain Not Found error, (2) go directly to an EXE file, which is assumed to be the valid download, or (3) show a webpage presumably containing a download link. The latter category would still have to be checked manually eventually, but this could be a big timesaver for categories 1 and 2.

It's not as simple as that though. For instance, I believe a RapidShare / MediaFire type page would return a 200 status code even if the download was no longer valid. A lot of the games page links don't link directly to the games files, they link to the download from the page linked in the games database. And recursing links automatically is both tricky and potentially dangerous. Plus there are a lot more (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HTTP_status_codes) status codes than just 200 and 404! There are about 600 direct links to .zip, .rar and .exe files, which would be easier to mirror (and mark as valid) automatically, but the other 2/3 might have to be done by hand.

But that's just what I said: create a list from the games db of all the games that do not point to agsarchives. Then you have to check those that don't if they exist, if they do, adjust the link, if they don't find/update/disable accordingly. Indeed a Herculean task but you have to start somewhere and you'll be doing it only once. When you try to find correct downloads now on 'public' links, you'll have to do it again in the future.
That being said, I'll update the db images with the games Arjon & Trampoline/sthomannch provided.

No Traveller Returns (Demo) (http://www.mediafire.com/?7osmr57dh7rpklq) - ...another working link(!) (http://ssh.me.uk/games/NTR_DEMO(1).zip) was in the game's "Completed Games Announcements" thread - first post!!! (roll) (hosted by SSH)

To be honest, I rather doubt that it makes that much sense at this point to go through our database in search of broken links and not to look up those 'broken' games in the AGSarchives at the same time (i.e. instantly fixing broken links as we go along). Almost all of the games you listed are downloadable in the AGSarchives database right now! Except mabye 2 or 3. It wouldn't be much use to mark those as broken links, since they're available (apart from those 3). The list I compiled was just for reference, those are games that aren't available in the AGSarchive database, the "Net" or our database.
My list is no good, selmiak (it's 'out of date' already), use AGA's automated ones...or is it?!? - too tired...another day.
There might still be games here: http://arj0n.agsarchives.com/ that is yet to be added to the AGSA db that are needed. Worth checking out I guess :).
I want to check AGSA for the games I listed as down today, was just too tired yesterday and thought maybe someone else already starts :)
I didn't mark them as broken yet too, I just went through all these W-Z games and made a list and posted it. Like delaying and in the meantime outsourceing the work to the crowd, if only there were a word for it...
So I had a cunning idea. As the AGS Archives database is stored on the same server as the main site's, I wrote a thing that picked out all the games in the AGS database that are also in the AGSA database, and identified the URL on AGSA. Give me a while and I'll make this visible on the games page. All 953 AGSA pages will shortly be linked on the relevant AGS games page's page.
Mind you that a page on AGSA doesn't necessarily mean a download on AGSA... There are still a number of "coming soons...."
There are over 1000 files available in total. I'll make sure only AGSA pages with download links are linked though.
Can I be of any help in this process?
If you mean the AGSA bit, that'll all be done with database queries. It'll take a few minutes when I get the chance to take a look at it. Not something anyone but me can really do!

Yeh, you better do the magic db stuff AGA. 8-)
I meant the whole "missing images/broken links/missing games/etc" process here ;)
That would be great, Arj0n. Especially considering your ability to make those missing games appear out of nowhere!
Some info in between: All available versions of AS Racing Manager (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/655/) are missing the ac2game.dat file.
It seems to have been downloaded 5,500 times, no comments on the entry page. Was there ever a version that actually worked? Does anyone know?
edit: Nevermind, it seems to have worked at some point in 2005 at least:AGS Games in Production / AS Racing Manager (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=23945.msg296799#msg296799), however buggy.
Anyway, every zip file is missing that file so far...
And one question: I'm slowly getting somewhat confused with all the upload/download resources we have. We can't just simply link those game entries to Arj0ns uploads (or the link Peder posted: http://arj0n.agsarchives.com/) directly, or can we? We download them and upload them to sites like mediafire for now (at least that's what I did with the few games I fixed from the 'unavailable' list so far). Sorry, total noob concerning all that server mubojumbo-overhead-bandwith-limitations stuff. :embarrassed:

I would NOT suggest to link them to the uploads I did, these are just temporarily.
And also NOT to my AGSA account (http://arj0n.agsarchives.com/), a while ago I just uploaded a pile of old ags games there to be sorted.
;)
These uploaded missing games (and missing games that might be found again in the future) should at least be added to peders AGSA (there's space enough PLUS it's a dedicated space). Using a host like Mediafire isn't the best option imho...
I don't know if they can also be uploaded to the AGS games database somehow or linked from peder's AGSA?
Well, that stuff is up to AGA and Peder I think :)
Yeah, I wasn't clear about that. Linking the AGS database entries to Peder's AGSA is basically what we did for the past two weeks (with a few minor exceptions that actually only have outside mirrors). If the missing game was in the AGSA database, we linked it there. I even pasted an AGSA link as download mirror in most entries while fixing screenshots. I meant exclusively those games that have no mirror at all so far, no AGSA entry (or file!), no outside mirror...
Means, how/where shall we store those game files until someone can upload those to the AGSA database?

Isn't it easy for those games to upload them to their (maybe to be created) AGSA gamepage and add that AGSA-dl-link to the AGS-DB as main download link?
(just thinking...)

That's what I've been saying all the time. Just check the games db to see if the link points to agsa
download (not games page). If not, check if the game's available on agsa. If it is, change the link to point there, if it isn't and the games is elsewhere, create the page and download on agsa and point the games db to that direction.
That way you'll eventually filter out all the games you don't have and make the games available for the future.
Yes, sounds like the best way to work this all out.

Here's where Peder will come to the rescue ;)
I think you/we will need a special account for that.
@Peder: strange, I seem to be unable to login at agarchives... (or has it never been working so far? can't remember...)
EDIT:
Just been talking with Peder about this and I quote him:
"There is currently no way of adding games on AGSA...
But it will hopefully come very soon"
Okay, now all games with an AGS Archives entry (e.g. http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/276/) have a link to the relevant AGSA page, assuming said page has a download link.
Nice! :)
EDIT:
But some ags-db games has an AGSA DL-link that ends up an 'GameID/0/', 2 examples:
Indiana Jones and the Crown of Solomon demo 2.1 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/721/) (by CJ entertainment) has as AGSA dl-link: http://agsarchives.com/download/GameID/0/ (http://agsarchives.com/download/GameID/0/) in stead of: http://agsarchives.com/download/GameID/606/ (http://agsarchives.com/download/GameID/606/)
King's Quest II+ VGA (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/144/) (by AGD Interactive) has as AGSA dl-link: http://agsarchives.com/download/GameID/0/ (http://agsarchives.com/download/GameID/0/) in stead of: http://agsarchives.com/download/GameID/118/ (http://agsarchives.com/download/GameID/118/).
Or will all these these 'GameID/0/' links be correct by the Image Updaters?
No, I just accidentally checked whether a game had an AGSA entry the wrong way! Fixed now.
almost there, by those where you removed the "AGSA /0/" link you seem to have left a hardreturn or something between the last line and the closing bracket:
If the image doesn't work, please report that.
)
in stead of:
If the image doesn't work, please report that.)
example (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/144/)
just a small thing ;)
EDIT2:
Still I don't get why for example Indiana Jones and the Crown of Solomon demo 2.1 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/721/) has no AGSA link anymore while it does has an AGSA page (//http://) & AGSA DL link (http://agsarchives.com/gamecard/606/).
For KQ II+ VGA (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/144/) same thing (except that the AGSA DL link for this game is an external (http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/kq2/download/download.html) url)
While III Spy (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/276/) still does have a correct AGSA link in the AGS-DB while it also does has an existing AGSA page and DL link...
Fixed the bracket.
Because the title of the game in the AGS games page is not identical to the one in the AGS Archives. Not really much we can do about that, since having non identical matching is too open to mistakes. If you want to provide a list of examples of this though, I'd be happy to fix them manually.
AGSA pages where the link isn't hosted locally won't be returned, because that's pointless. It's having a reliable link on AGSA we care about!

Ah so that's why, that makes sense.
And yes, I can get you such list. Probably by tomorrow.

Dedicated links indeed :)
I just added a thing where authorised people can set the AGSA link on the paneledit page. If you don't know what that means, ignore this message!
Speaking of AGSA, there is a problem I keep running into. Whenever my search contains an apostrophe, like "king's quest" it always results in "There are no games in the archive with "king's quest" in its title". If I search for "king" alone, the two King's quest games are there.
Why is that?
Probably because the game names are stored in the database escaped, while the search strings aren't, or vice versa. Should be a quick fix for Peder when he reads your message!
@Narushime: that's a know 'feature flaw' of AGSA... For now it's easier to use the 'view By letter' option.
@AGA: Here (http://tdepaus.home.xs4all.nl/arj0n/AGA/) I uploaded 2 csv files:
- AGS-AGSA-Final-(agsalinksonly).csv
- AGS-AGSA-Final.csv
AGS-AGSA-Final-(agsalinksonly).csv contains only the ags gamepages where agsa has a download link for.
-AGS DB gamepage urls [sorted on this field] (per 21-05-2013)
-AGS DB gamepage gametitles
-agsa DL urls (1)
-agsa gamepage game titles
AGS-AGSA-Final.csv contains all ags gamepages and if available also the agsa download link.
-all the AGS DB gamepage urls [sorted on this field] (per 21-05-2013)
-all the AGS DB gamepage game titles
-all the agsa DL urls (1)
-all the agsa gamepage game titles
(1)
For the collumn "AGS-DL-Link" in the file:
<AGSA link> = direct downloadlink from AGSA
"Coming soon" = has gamepage but no dl-link yet
"Buy" = has gamepage but no only a 'buy'-link
"No Gamecard" = has no gamepage at all
So to get all correct agsa dl-links in the ags-db maybe remove all the current AGSA-dl links from the ags-db and redo the job using the file AGS-AGSA-Final-(agsalinksonly).csv?
-Arj0n.
I'm on my phone in mc donalds but thought I'd check this thread while I'm somewhere with internet.
AGA, the agsarchives db has all AGS games and AGSA games minus a weeks worth of games merged together, with both the AGS game id and current AGSA id stored in it. You could use that instead of looking for same titles!
The search with ' is indeed not working properly, this will be sorted with the new build as soon as i finish it!
I'm without internet for a week as I've just moved, so I'll only be checking his thread whenever I'm somewhere with internet :).
don't gain too much weight when going online Peder ;)
Thanks Arj0n and Peder. Using this info I've added what should be all the valid AGSA download links, regardless of whether the AGSA name is completely identical to the one in the AGS db.
I'm going through the "broken links + broken downloads" unavailable list (as is) at the moment, contacting the authors. Could everyone who contacted game authors so far (during this effort!) send me a quick PM, about who they contacted and whether per e-mail or PM? This way I could avoid spamming the authors with messages.
Two entries I was able to isolate so far:
Crazy Mansion/ Maniac Mansion 3 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/372/) - never was - there were a few attempts, first one here in the in-production thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=12759.msg152479#msg152479), second one here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=46301.msg622199#msg622199) (antimort & Black Knight are guests, no members here) and one on indiegogo (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/crazy-mansion-adventure-project?website_name=CrazyMansion).
I don't think the database should be abused as an advertisement spot for games that might one day happen (the only thing that entry ever provided as download was a theme song). I'd say chuck it out!
Matt and James Amazing Game For Everyone (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1174/) - never was - read comment on entry page! "Coming soon" advertisement from 2009. (by 'Coolmatt' - no member on the forums/ no in-production thread & no other references on the forums (aside from this thread))
EDIT: OK, researched some more for this one. There seems to have been a demo, according to the author's blog (http://mjag4e.blogspot.de/), but you needed to mail him on order to get it. Will try to contact the guy.
Totally agreed on the MM3 thing. If there's no files to show for a project, it shouldn't be in the games db yet, it should be in an AGS Games in Production thread. I've disabled that entry.
Yes, that 'Crazy Mansion/ Maniac Mansion 3' project (by Eins Schweiss Productions if I remember right) has been cancelled a loooong time ago already.
Quick info:
"Clash of Forces - Episode 2 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1487/)" was made available again for download by it's author. The download links to his website - if someone wants to archive it for future 'safekeeping'.
"D.Jones: Deceased (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/731/)" by Cameron Urquhart can be disabled. Got a message from him saying that he's fine with it.
The Internet really is an eerie place sometimes... (sorry for double posting)
Managed to wrestle three 'lost' AGS games from the virtual netherworld over at Internet Archive (http://archive.org/web/web.php)!
For two of those, I'm not sure whether that is a good thing at all though - but that's not for me to decide:
"All Hallows' Eve (http://199.91.152.82/1lbnoz1nc5dg/gycfd97nednnejd/AllHallowsEve.zip)" ...that one seems actually fun.
"Hell's Satans (http://205.196.121.44/16bd4nmkp0ig/a6gfbfcipqdgnqn/HellsSatans238.zip)" ...mmhh... :sealed:
"Drugs and Alians (http://205.196.123.30/x9r909vwy4rg/7y899u4dht549ot/Drugs+and+alians.zip)" (wrong) (wtf)

Drugs and alians
Changed it, but please do me one favour AGA and let's not mention that one again...
Taking a screenshot was kind of a traumatic experience...
Well done Tramp ;)
Thanks, Arj0n.
GameMcSherlock found another one in the archived data:
Everlight Forest Demo (http://205.196.122.18/gekfxudqk7kg/3rn4a02uvb89vnx/setup.exe) - game's entry in the database (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/382/) [It's a an installer version, setup.exe file]
Also, another double entry:
SWEE NIGHTMARE (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1484/) by John Scott [27 Sept. 2011] (had game-breaking bug/ see comment)
Sweet_Nightmare (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1486/) by John Phillip Scott [1 Oct. 2011] (seems to have been the updated version)

Done.
So this seems to be the right place to suggest allowing gameauthors more images per game. Something like this:
I hope the image is self explanatory. When there is one/no image the thumbs below just wouldn't show up, if there are only 2 images only 2 thumbs show up, no empty placeholder. dunno if centered and in the same size of the 3 thumbs or bigger to align to the div width is better. bigger images means bigger filesize on the server, other than that it could become clunky with bigger pics.
And allowing the author(s) to upload even the minithumbnails for the according screenshot could lead to better imagequality in these small images. If the feature is not used just automate the thumnailcreationshrinkingmechanism. So.... maybe having the thumbs (for 2 images for one game) in one fixed size is better as when a game has 3 screens and the minithumbs are created and then after some time the author decides to delete one of the screenshots the minithumbs are in the really small size already and automatically resizing them would surely look crappy.
That'll take a bit of work, selmiak, but I'll give it a go when I get the chance.
cool, no hurries, seems like there is no immediate demand, I just wanted to get this out there :)
Seems to be quite modern and convenient for game authors. and I'll give feedback once you get to it :D

Cacho Quest (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1178/) by Mariano Cirigliano (only in Spanish - I think?)

Still wondering if anyone else wants to download and store all these lost games, until Peder is ready and it's possible to upload them to AGSarchives.com. (Preferably someone who'll have admin access to Peder's archives?)
I do download them so i can add them to my Collection. Just in case.
"Invalid or Deleted File." for Sweet Nightmare... I combined the two entries though. Wanted to update the image too, but as I say, I couldn't download it.

I second this. A lot. Yes, we all judge games by their screenshots. And often 1 screenshot is insufficient to judge. Or the 1 screenshot present isn't an ideal screenshot.
Whoops, seems access was set to only specific people. Should be open now.
There will be up to three screenshots soon.

Nice enhancement!
That does of course mean we (you) could spend another few weeks replaying all the games to take another two screenshots. Or maybe not.

I *might* be of help here indeed ;)
(Which would be easy since I got them all stored on my HD, so don't need to download them first)
So I tried rewriting the image uploading script, and it kinda broke. I'm too tired to think of how to fix it properly atm, so it won't be working until tomorrow at the earliest. Sorry!
I didn't look around too much more for a thread where I should be mentioning this, I hope you don't mind if I mention some ideas / suggestions here that shouldn't be too hard...
1) When you search, and there are multiple pages, clicking any of the "Next Page" / "2" links goes to:
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/namesearch/2/name/
And it says "Invalid search!"
2) Anytime there's a list of games (ie list of search results), the title of each entry is "Game Name (link) by Author". Could Author also be made a link? I think that's useful as a fast way to go to all of an author's games.
3) When a screenshot is < 640x480, could you zoom it x2 when you click on it (from both the list of games, as well as the individual game page)? You click on it, and it's the same size or even appears slightly smaller. IMHO this would be hugely useful.
4) Games with unknown release date appear as "unknown" in the game list but they appear as "1 Jan 1970" on the individual game page. (By the way - couldn't many games, especially those in zip archives, be approximate dated by the last modified date stamp of the files?)
I think that's all I got for you for now. Great job guys!
Search is mildly broken. It will be fixed eventually.
Zooming up screenshots is tricky. They're scaled down to 320x200 in the page, and are shown at full size (which is often... 320x200) when you click on them. However, scaling up is quite difficult to do reliably across the various browsers; each of the major browsers handles pixel art scaling differently, and choosing the correct one is awkward. I will see what I can do, but I'm not promising anything.
2) and 4) I can probably do quickly tomorrow.
Cool! Yeah, I hear ya re: scaling. I was thinking of a little PHP resize script that would do a nearest neighbor enlargement on the fly.
Multiplied by 100 visitors an hour, that could REALLY stop the server dead. Unless it saves the upscaled image on the server and this PHP script is a one time thing. Either way, it doesn't sound like a good idea.
Plus PHP can't detect browsers very well, so it's not really an option on the fly. JavaScript is probably the better option, much as some people may dislike it. Could do the one time PHP scaling when the images are uploaded though. That would minimise the amount of overheads.
The author of "It ain't easy" answered my PM to tell me the entry could be erased,a s it was just a short animation.
I nonetheless asked him if he had a copy handy; I'm waiting for his answer.

uhm, this is why the input field for imagelinks is gone/disabled? Just checking if you are aware of it being gone...
Link description in the form for a game entry should be
Game description.
And there I thought embedding youtube videos for a trailer will surely also be of use. Dunno if just as another thumb in the list of 3 or as a new item on the page or where to put it...
Yes, it's deliberately disabled. Videos... maybe.
Video embedding seems like a good idea. After all, a video is worth a thousand pictures, no?

It's fairly well supported in CSS these days, although every browser requires its own prefix, see "Examples" on https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/image-rendering.
