Title: Copyrighted materials...
Post by: on Wed 23/04/2003 02:57:27
Sorry if this has been asked before...but what's the etiquette on copyrighted materials like other games or TV shows?  Can we create games based on tv shows or movies, or is that illegal?  As I understand it, you can but you just can't make any money off it...I might be wrong, but it can't be too much different than regular fanfics, right?

Anyone know for sure?  Thanks!

You can make fair use of other's material without gaining explicit permission. This means a small amount for criticism etc. or parody, in which case you can use a fair bit.

I would say, just do it anyway. It's not like anyone seems to care. If they do, release it under a nom de plume.

if they give comments on your 'illegal game' just cut off the download link and tell them you didn't know it was illegal.

You won't have problems (i think)

Considering what Tierra seems to have gotten away with it, I doubt you'll have too many problems.  ;)
