Title: Cursor help.
Post by: Dualnames on Wed 20/06/2007 00:27:43
In this project I'm working on , Lone Case that is, I decided to use CMI style GUI. I've made the verbcoin gui awesome, but I need a cursor. I keep making new ones but I just can't figure it out. For more info on the game go to the in production forum and find Lone Case. In CMI , Guybrush had an X for main cursor. What should a cop have? I made a badge for the verbcoin. Cursor seemed to be the easiest part. It's quite the opposite though. So help me please. Or point me towards the right path. Thanks everybody.

Hmm. Maybe a nightstick (club, with a handle sticking out)? A gun? A police hat?

Something smaller. The club isn't bad idea though.

Why not just a hand in various gestures. Talking would be a hand showing a badge for example - übercool.
But then again, I now looked at your grafix and I think that a hand would be a bit hard for you to produce and it wouldn't match the overall style of the game. There is nothing worse than a bad mix of styles. For your case, I suggest nightstick or the most practical and universal of them all -- an arrow.

Maybe an arrow with chains at the bottom end, to resemble handcuff chains? I dunno.

I'd go for an arrow, a themed verb coin is plenty of copness. Not every sprite needs to scream YOU ARE A COP at you! It didn't really occur to me that the CMI cursor was a piratey treasure map kind of X, I don't think it mattered much. The one themed cursor I noticed, (Larry 7's condom cursor) was kind of silly. Easy to see, and easy to see where it's pointing at are the most important things, and for that you can't beat an arrow.

why not just have a crosshair-cum-reticule type thing that you see in all types of action games these days?
it could be white or non-animated when not over something interactable, and red or start rotating when over a hotspot/item/character.

BOYD, that's a very good idea. I'd go with that myself if I were making a cop game. Which I'm not. Therefore I can't. So there.

I made a funny looking arrow. When i say funny I mean a cartoony like. Oh well, I can't describe one you have to see it foryourself. Boyd's idea though got me into thinking it again. You mean the typical Lucas Arts crosshair. Like Full throttle?
