Hey Everyone!

We're in the process of gathering information for a new Detective adventure game we're working on and we would love your help if you can take some time to answer our survey.

Thanks!

Akatosh

Survey taken. Although it's lacking questions like "How many subplots do you like?" or maybe "What kind of person should the main villain be?".

Stupot

Done.
Tell us more about the project you have so far, SMG.
And good luck.

Done. Though at a few questions I would've appreciated 'other' or some more options. One of the first settings one, for example.

Did somebody say "vague"?  :D

Heh, Clue threw me off, they call it Cluedo over here.

Edit: GAWDAMMIT. Same topic. Serves me right for seeing Akatosh's post before doing the quiz. Please don't smite me ProgZ.

I took the quiz, but I skipped the last few questions. Really, if you have a good story, or a good idea for a game - just make it. Someone will like it.

The impression I got, with this survey and all, is that you're thinking of making a commercial game, and you want to appeal to the largest audience with it. But I don't really prefer this or that - it all depends on the individual game. For example, I don't watch CSI but if a game like that comes out and it's got that certain appeal, I'd happily play it. (I don't watch CSI simply because I don't watch much TV at all, by the way, so the survey answers are probably skewed.)

In other words, I felt my answers to that quiz are worth zilch, and I just needed to let you know that.

I agree with auriond that judging from the survey questions that you're looking to make something reaching the largest number of audience.  If you make a good game, people will play regardless of genre.  You should make a game that YOU want to play instead of what you think others might want to play.  This way you're not setting yourself up for a big disappointment if in the end the game isn't a blockbuster.  I didn't bother to fill out the survey because I like mysteries in general, and what I answer will not be useful for you in anyway.

InCreator

You should put the buying method question to the start.

Because that's basically what finished this survey for me. Completely.

mouthuvmine

Wow. I felt like I was actually helping out for a second there when I hit the question about buying this game. I'm not saying this crowd is "cheap". I'm not "cheap". But there a certain aversion I've noticed among the people here to just jumping into a purchase from someone they (or I, even) don't know, or haven't played / seen anything from. Also, anyone here will likely handle making a game THEY like for themselves. Just make your detective game, I'm sure it'll be great!

Stupot

Yeh. Part of the focus of this community is that the majority of the games are non-commercial.  Of course there are exceptions;  I bought Super Jazz Man and loved it, and I fully intend on buying the Blackwell games at some point, but these are games I know about and played demos of.  We know nothing about this detective game to start planning our purchase.

Thanks for the input so far, for everyone that took the survey and for everyone who posted questions and comments. The AGS community is very much like many other communities where people gather for fun to share in what they enjoy, I think it's a great way to share ideas and to gain experience for anyone hoping to join the ranks of the disgruntled masses toiling away under the tight deadlines of studio pressure.

We have a pretty solid idea of what we want to do, we just wanted to get some input from adventure gamers, it doesn't mean we're going to read over the survey and make sure every little point on there is met until we have this Frankenstein creation based on a general survey.

auriond

That's good to know. I was kinda half-afraid of the Frankenstein. :)

But I'm curious to know then, how does this info help your game if you already have an idea of what you're going to do? Your questions were quite specific, and seemed to be groping around rather than getting feedback on something concrete.

Sorry if I seem a little nosey, but we're a community of adventure game makers as well as players, and we're more likely to be curious about the game-making processes of other people.

It largely has to do with publishers, we can explain why we're doing things a certain way with "see! we asked people!".

Nice to know what our opinions are worth...
