Title: Eragon
Post by: on Thu 02/03/2006 14:01:25
Did anyone of you read this book? I'm thinking of making a game about this book for my friend's birthday, and I would like to know who else would like to play it. Thank you.

Hmm. I haven't read the book. I heard that it's really good. I am making games based on Castaways of the Flying Dutchman and Airborn. Have you read either of those? Maybe if you 'd be interested, we could help each other make games.

I have read it, although I cannot remember the plot whatsoever right now, so it must not have been that good, heh.

It's always better in my opinion to make your own game idea, maybe you could draw inspiration from the book, but still do your own thing?

Yeah, I got an idea for a game from a whole bunch of different things.

There is an Eragon text adventure already. Check out the Eragon website.

I personally don't think it would make a very good adventure game, since a lot of the main character's actions are out of his hands- he's told to do this, he's forced into doing that, and a bunch of random chance. The actions that he actually does for himself are mostly gaining skills.

Maybe an RPG would work better than an adventure game.

Are you kidding! 99% of adventure game puzzles are people telling you to do this and forcing you into doing that!

yodaman111111111 you are making games about EVERYTHING.

I pretty much agree with Dragon Rose, it'd be difficult to convey the story too closely while still giving the player options.  Maybe with some artistic license or a side character.  Then again, the plot's simple enough that you might be able to summarize it fairly quickly and it'd certainly make a nice storytelling/adventure game.

As I remember the book, it was told to do things like "chop wood," "follow me for months" or "spend time with dragon." There's no real thinking involved for the player.   It's not an interesting puzzle- guy gives you an axe, tells you to chop wood. Wood is chopped. There's a big honking dragon in the scene with you, and you're told to spend time with it. It's hard to avoid.

All the interesting things he did he was forced into- "do magic spell because you can't control it," "run away," "have a vision."   That type of thing would be conveyed in a cut scene, because it's not a consious decision made by the player. It just happens.

Now, if you had to figure out how to get firewood without an axe, or if you had to get to the dragon in order to spend time with it, or if you did magic on purpose, THEN it would be interesting.  The whole point of the story is that the character is swept up by the winds of fate and can't control his actions. And that's just not as fun to play.

However, there is a lot of skill building- learning how to ride, how to do magic, and I think how to fight (it's been a while since I read it).  That sort of thing is perfect for an RPG. It could be a good game- just not a good Adventure Game.

However, I'd still play it. It's got DRAGONS!
