I was just wondering, has anyone ever thought about doing a Police Quest 1 remake?  I've noticed many other Sierra remakes but Police Quest has always been my favorite.  Is that a possible project for anyone?

Not only there has been a remake, it's a Sierra remake. Also, this has been asked before, as Darth hinted.

Remake of the remake perhaps? It's like making a remake of Apprentice 1 Deluxe edition.

Personally, I do not understand the strange urge to remake a golden game from the past. Why not try to steal the raisins of that cake and make a new game in its spirit. Why make a game where everyone allready knows the plot, puzzles and predicament (ok, I needed another word beginning with 'p'.. so shoot me..)? Is it strange that the adventure genre is regarded dead when so many prospect developers are stuck dreaming of the eighties? Not that I blaim anyone of you, but the Kings Quest VGA took home a obscene amount of awards, when it is far from original in gaming experience. It has pretty VGA graphics, and lenght. Same as with the Apprentice series. Pretty, but a highly strained puzzle design, and quite frankly, not that good of a game.

Renew the genre! Evolve adventure gaming!

- Linus  who hasn't done anything original at all. Talk about hypocrite.

I'd love to see a proper cop game, but obviously they always have to border between adventure and simulation since there's so much that a real officer has to remember and abide.

I know there was a Sierra remake, but there was a Sierra remake for Kings Quest also.  Honestly, I was so happy there was a Liesure Suite Larry remake on this site that I thought someone may want to do Police Quest.  That's all.

Yes, but the King's Quest remake is just an SCI remake. Police Quest 1, Space Quest 1 and Larry 1 were all remade into full-blown VGA point and click with music. What's there to remake?

I may be in the minority on this ... but I never [really] mind seeing an old game given a face-lift.  Even if it already had one.  I don't mind seeing somebody else give it a go.

I have a plan to [re]make an old classic (keeping it secret) ... but it's on hold until Amulet of Kings and JP & Cosmo II are finished.  Look for it around 2012 ...

I'm one of the few people who apparently have vastly enjoyed the vga facelift versions of most sierra games (quest for glory comes to mind).  Granted, the bizarre claymation portrait stuff looked terrible, but overall I enjoyed it.

I think you shouldn't start a remake of police quest 1
but you should make a seperate cop-adventure game ;)

Why do a remake?

If your that much of a fan why not create your own side story game? Or better than that make your own game with your own characters!

I don't understand this whole 'remake' scene, where's the fun in taking something already set out for you and having little to no creative input when making it? It's like dot to dot.

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Chicky, I can answer that at least - from a scripter's point of view, it's the best way to get acquainted with what AGS can do. Trying to replicate everything a game did.

And sometimes it's for eliminating some specific issue - MMDeluxe removed the need for having "what is" selected for browsing the game window, and that was extraordinarily good. My oen LSL2 did away with the parser. Sometimes these old games just need a little nudge in order to be enjoyable nowadays.

Not so with PQ1VGA, however.

I love classics remakes. Mainly, because old games tend to be unplayable, or look & sound extremely awful despite good story or gameplay.

Take Sierra's Gold Rush! for example. Very unresponsive text parser, pre-AGI graphics, RANDOM TIMED puzzles (the damned letter-from-brother one), loads of dead ends... but still very unique and interesting story, which could make also a superb novel or epic movie.

Now give me one reason why mouse-controlled, dead-end-free, redrawn, maybe even with recomposed music & sounds version would suck?

What do you mean pre-AGI graphics? it's about the best looking AGI game, and one of the last ones produced. To my eyes it's at least as visually compelling as any amateur VGA remake I've played, and quite stronger in many ways.

And that's really the only problem I'd have, the amateur part. I don't think a remake would necessarily suck at all but I'd rather no remake over an incompetant one, and when it comes to it, I'd rather a competant person design their own games.

Perhaps it's because I'm more into visual arts than the average player but there's not a whole lot of added graphical value in the amateur VGA remakes for me. They almost universally suffer from poor composition (due to basing the layout on the original less realistically represented bgs), on top of which is layered repetitively textured surfaces, everywhere, and sometimes even what looks like straight up noise.

On the whole they are less effective to me than the better few AGI games, which are admittedly almost graph like in their simplicity ("here is a tree, next to it is a horse pulling a cart, a man in a hat is walking along") but perform better than the usual vga remake style, which tends to give a very consistent and monotonous rendering when compared to the more lively imaginings I get from the originals. I have no problem with people taking something and showing me their own intepretation of it, but most remakers seem to approach the task with a painting my numbers strategy - wood areas get this texture, grass gets this texture, water is this blue, and overall it's like a machine did some advanced upscaling, there's not a lot of new information, and there's much less room to imagine it in for yourself.

I only mention it since you asked for reasons people might dislike the idea of a remake, and I know a lot of people enjoy the amateur remakes so I'm not arguing that they are pointless. I especially agree that there are many gameplay fixes and improvements people could make, too, and the best remakes do a lot of that (like KQ2VGA).

Obviously from all the discussions we've had on the topic there are people that like remakes and there are people that don't. Nobody is going to be (or should be) discouraged from making them if it appeals to them personally, but I'd encourage original stuff if you're sitting on the fence, making your own stuff is fun!

I've thought about it, sort of.   Police Quest is my favorite series, so if I was going to do a remake - it'd be either 1 or 2.  Course I'm with 2ma2 on this, why redo a game where everything is the same and there are no surprises?  There'd have to be enough changes to keep it interesting, especially while making it.  I don't think I'd even think of reusing any of the backgrounds, using only the original PQ1 as a basis for the remake.   The driving sequence was cool, but that'd have to be redone quite a bit I'd imagine.

But, I'm not making a remake anytime soon...I've just "thought" about it. ;)
