concise, blunt, and no word of explanation. interesting to see right after reading the history of warcraft adventures on gamespot, thanks to eric's thread.
Actually when you see what they made with MI4, thats a good choice and this actually proves that they actually do care a little about us fans and a little lesser about money.
Well i'm not sure should i say ya :) or :(
:)
I haven't read this yet, but WTF!?!!?!
Now, onto reading and most likely, crying.
Okay, wow, that was the smallest piece of writing ever. Hopefully "The Kickstand" website on MixNMojo will get us a better scoop on why?
It couldn't have been just because they lost the voice talents of Ben due to cancer...
Well, if my sources are correct, then the game was turning out shnit, and the designer were crap.
Ironically, they were the same designers that did MI4.
According to my source, of course.
And I'm glad they cancelled it -- it sounded like garbage.
I don't think it was from the same designers as MI4... not sure.
It didn't look so bad to me, but I don't really care so much that it's cancelled. "Sam and Max: Freelance Police" has all of my anticipation.
Ahh well, its a shame but im fairly glad. I'm sick of the amount of "sequels" these days. The problem is, right from the word "sequel", we know really its all about money.
Nevertheless, I think it was a wise decision.
But hey, I even got moody when they named Charlie's Angels II "Full Throttle".
m0ds
Wow... Imagine how crappy the product was. It is incredible how can a Company fall so much.
I am too not particulary sad, as I suspect Rodekill to be correct.
Now does anybody still want a Monkey Island 5 or Grim Fandango 2?
Good. A LA action game cancelled. I wish they did the same thing with Indy:TIM and ET.
woah, the infernal machine maybe but dont you dare touch the latest one ._.

GF2 :D
To be honest I'm glad that they killed the project.
I only hope they did the same with the 3d artists.
I thought their 3d art looked quite good..
but I wasn't really looking forward to this much, so it doesn't bother me.. just hope they don't do the same to Sam & Max 2
QuoteNow does anybody still want a Monkey Island 5 or Grim Fandango 2?
Well i know that when i finished the game, i knew I finished a perfect game that, at that time, didnt needed a sequel.
But the more i grow and the more i think about it, the sequel could be possible, but only if the story was at least as good as the first.
And i know that the longer you play the game the more atmosphere you'll get, Isnt it better when you really dont get everything, and then you try a lot of things so you discover something that you usually wouldnt.
I love that feeling of playing a game long.
But nowadays it seems that i really dont have too much patience, and if i am stuck in a place more than 1 and a half hours, I'll try to look for a walkthrough, and that saddens me, because i hate walkthrougs. You see I have this temtation where sometimes if the wt is too accesible (sp) to me, i go and read it.
That's a reason why i dont like haveing access to the Internet. I remember times where i would just play games and enjoyed them, no matter how long did it take, the older i am, the less patient i am. What a shame for my "adventurical" education.
btw now i have less and less will to play games generaly, but i'll talk about it in some other more related to that thread.
Cheers
I can't understand how anyone could expect a Grim Fandango. The ending wrapped up so nicely... only, and only if it used new characters, but I still don't want that. That game was so good, im my opinion, does not deserve a sequel.
Yes, definetly, not new characters, but it could go around Glottis, or someone new, and if LEC(LA?) wanted money, i'm sure they think of a ways to bring back Manny, like he's in a trouble or smthn, like in those soapies...
Err... that was a rethorical question. I mean that LucasArts, quite plainly, lost the ability to do good adventure games.
When did this happen? I can only think of one slightly dissapointing one recently.. they just aren't making enough of them anymore. Luckily this one doesn't seem to have been much of an adventure game.
I think it might not be losing the ability (though it's very possible) but losing the love for adventure games, and also losing the talented people who made MI and GF and DOTT etc..
(Is the S&M sequel being made by the same person who made the original? I think he's joint project leader, I forgot his name).
Tim Schafer is no longer there, and I really don't understand why he's working with the evil Microsoft who don't want Psychonuats available on PC. hehe, j/k.
However, LucasArts must leave GF alone if Tim Schafer isn't there to make it. GF is perfect and the ending is wonderful, but I think it wouldn't be ruined if a sequel at least as good as the original(or better...imagine that, better than GF.. I woudl flip ;)). Right after finishing the game, I was left wanting more, and I had an idea of the train breaking down and Manny having to return to the 8th underworld etc... But it doesn't seem good now. I guess new characters are a must unless they want to show us the 9th underworld (which could be interesting as "the land of eternal rest" might not be at rest for some reason. But of course that would mean no Glottis *sniff*, unless there's a way of going back to the 8th underworld for some reason, and I should really shut up now :P), but a GF without Manny, Meche, Glottis and some of the others maybe, is something I can't even imagine. No, the characters must stay. Err.
Also, Ron Gilbert didn't make MI3, though it turned out pretty well IMO, but I think many people would object to an MI5 without Ron.
(Yes, I know, rethorical question, but you got me going ;)).
Oh but I've forgotten what the topic is, ah yes, Fullt Throttle. I haven't played it yet, just can't find it. Since Tim is responsible for it I am definetly getting it at the first chance. So about the sequel, without Tim it wouldn't be as good, so I have to say I'm somewhat glad they cancelled it.
They better not touch S&M II though, I'm really looking forward to it. ;)
Barcik: nonsense. Monkey Island 4 was a good adventure game. It may not have been a good Monkey Island game, but it was a good adventure. The last one, Grim Fandango, was superb. CMI before that was excellent, Full Throttle too. I wouldn't say that:
QuoteLucasArts, quite plainly, lost the ability to do good adventure games.
at all...
I still declare Sam and Max 2 to be incredibly promising.
Just the fact that Lucas Arts is still making adventure games is pretty awesome of them. I think FT2 looked pretty good. And I think Sam and Max 2 looks awesome.
I still have faith in Lucas Arts and it's very admirable that they haven't given up on adventure games. And I felt that MI4 was a good adventure game too. No Monkey Island, but it was good as a stand alone game.
QuoteAlso, Ron Gilbert didn't make MI3, though it turned out pretty well IMO, but I think many people would object to an MI5 without Ron.
Well Ron will be 95% not involved, so you shouldnt count on Ron. And the reason MI3 was a fair MI sequel, is because of the years it was made, 96,97, those were the years that didnt use too much 3D, so they used 2D which i think saved the game because of its warmness.
Even Ron(i think it was him) said in a interview that he would like to try out 3d in adventure games when it is developed enough...
Pity.
oh my lord, czar, just cause a game is in 3d makes it bad? that is what i'm getting from you.
how is it a pity that ron wants to do a 3d adventure game, wouldn't you embrace that cause maybe he'd do one that people would play and enjoy and love and then other people would want to make one?
in general, not directed at anyone:
i don't know what some people's problem is, adventure games can't be 3d and they can't be written by anyone else but tim schaffer and ron gilbert!!!
who cares if they've left lucasarts. when was the last time they worked there? how many years ago? let it go... they sure have. There are people constantly fluxing in and out of Lucasarts, if the only people who can write adventure games for LA are Ron, Tim and Steve Purcell... then we have a problem.
when i brought up the warcraft adventure game it reminded me that there are thousands of games a year that get pitched and never go anywhere. imagine how many awesome games and how many crap games were pitched. imagine how many crap games Ron himself [OMG NOT THE GOD OF ADVENTUREGAMES!1!1!] pitched that were crap.
i'm not meaning to be all RAR RAR ANGER ANGER! this is mostly a large build up smooshing out over you all. people always just default to things like "Lucasarts only cares about TEHMONEY!!" when you've never once ever ever set foot in the offices or been there for any meeting. Where are you people getting this information? I'd love to know.
to paraphrase the interview for WarCraft Adventures, the market isn't run by the coorperations or the publishers. The game companies want to make a profit yes, they also want to make what the gamers want to play. what do the gamers want to play now? not adventure games. so sorry so sad. what did they want to play 10 or so years ago? adventure games. and before that? i dunno RPGs? and before that and before that... The companies don't just get together and say "Hey, let's only sell strategy games now!" then they all do the secret handshake and leave their secret Only In It For The Money headquarters. And before you say "Companies should be willing to take risks! And make games that they love not know will sell!" And I say there are... Tons of adventure games have come out, longest journey, syberia, black mirror, runaway, yadda yadda. Then more of you may say "Yea but those games stink." Then I say, does every adventure game rock? not at all. Are there some people that like Sierra over Lucasarts? Yes. Are there some people who just loved Syberia? Yes baby. Then more of you may say "But those aren't game like Monkey Island... Ya know, 2d." and I say, shut up.
i'm gonna stop, this isn't a violent post even if the tone seems harsh, it isn't directed at anyone i just hope to change a few minds
eric loves adventure games but hates a lot of adventure game fans.
edit: and for the record, everything that mitar has just said i think is dumb and i don't agree with him in the slightest.
I agree with Mr. C all the way. You guys really are acting stupid. You can't just say "well, since 3d killed 2d games, that means 3d sucks balls!" I just---- I'm so pissed at you guys, I just don't know how to describe why.

I'm a bit sorry for the harsh words I wrote before, it shouldn't have been like that. But that is not exactly what I mean. Monkey Island 4 was a good game, I agree. And Grim Fandango really was superb. But right now, they jus't probably don't have the people to do an adventure game like before, and what these sequels will be, if they will be, is a much weaker game than the original, and done to make money on the original's name.
To sum it up: I do not think that LucasArts right now can do a worthy sequel to Monkey Island and especially Grim Fandango. If they want to do an adventure game, I suggest them to try something new.
Quotewhat these sequels will be, if they will be, is a much weaker game than the original, and done to make money on the original's name.
Err, I don't think Sam and Max or Full Throttle are really such hot properties, considering the current gaming climate, anyway. I think "A Boy and His Blob 2" would have about as much name-power.
"A Boy and his Blob 2"? I've been waiting for about fifteen years!
I don't even care what Lucas Arts does anymore. If they produce some amazing adventure a few years from now, I'd be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not expecting anything good from them. Right now independant adventures show more promise. I'd much rather play original games like Revenants, What Time Is It, or Run Hot.
Only problem is that we have no idea whether or not they'll be finished.

Well, every company cares about the money. I believe that the real reason why full throttle 2 was cancelled is that they didn't want to put more money into fixing the game. it would probably cost too much. If money wans't involved, then they could have easily worked on the game for a lot longer.
Ok, I don't have any problem with Ron and Tim leaving lec. in fact; ron was out of there 11 years ago, and lucasarts made at least 6 great adventure games since then, where only 2 of them were fully commanded by tim (DOTT was co-produced by him and dave grossman).
But recently, LucasArts hasn't been progressing on the adventure side; all they want to do is come up with sequels with a whole bunch of stuff the fans want to see. Kind of sounds like those prequels about a galaxy far, far away.... which suck because of that. I don't wanna be pleased with injokes and sequels. I want original adventure games that push the boundaries of previous adventure games made.

This has to be the funniest thing I've seen in a while. Thank you...
Whoops, Sorry I missed this one Eric :/
I think it's rather odd they cancelled it, but it doesn't bother me thát much :)
I didn't like the progress so far.

Are you good to decide who is stupid and who´s not? If so, please change your nickname into "Mitar, the God, the mature man who is over all the opinions of the world, my world is Law"
Do you know the sentences "in my opinion" or "I think that..."?
Please, let me re-write your post:
I agree with Mr. Colossal. The fact that a game has been made in 3-d does not necesarilly mean it is wrong, do you remember Grim Fandango? It was awesome. In my opinion, not giving a chance to 3-d adventures just because of the fact they´re in 3-d is not wise. BTW, even without sharing your opinions, I respect them.
Now... In front of this thread, shitar, you have two chances...
a) Swallow your pride and agree in some way with me or...
b) Facing me and starting a war you couldn´t win.
Do you know that I told M0ds (my friend) that was necessary to give you a warm goodbye when you leaved? Do you remember that I told Femme Fatale that it was not fair to critisice your "paintball game" post being she the queen of the strange threads?
I am trying to be fair with everybody.
Do not face with one of the not many AGSers who defended you.
Your choice.
WTF?! What was all that talk about "the revival of adventure games" and "going back to our roots"?! Don't get me wrong, I was more than dissapointed at the direction FT2 was taking, but I think it at least deserved more than, like, three sentences. Dammit, this had better not happen with "Freelance Police". >:(
I think LucasArts' press release was all that needed to be said. I'm not going to bother quoting verbatim, but they said that they did not want to disappoint fans of Full Throttle. Great! If they felt that FT2 would turn out to be a disappointment to fans of the original game and it is too far into development to radically change, then I think that gives them all the justification they need. I mean, remember when it was announced and there were screenshots and a trailer and just about everybody on these forums (myself included, I should add) was going "THIS IS TEH SUKCS!!!11" Well, everybody sort of got more reasonable after a while, but I can't imagine TOO many people here really thinking this game was going to be that great. I think this is evidence that perhaps LucasArts does care more about its fans than some people would like to admit. I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in saying that I would rather not have have a sequel to such a great game at all than have an unworthy one. After all, we still have Sam and Max 2 (and TLJ2 and Syberia2 and BS3, etc.) to look forward to, and I think all of those look great.
I'm currently playing an adventure game made by LucasArts... its called Knights of the Old Republic.. yeah, its Star Wars, but there are plenty of puzzles, and even right now, I'm having to find the 4 map pieces... yeah good ol' story from Monkey Island 2. ;)
God, this game is addicting.
Hehe, I haven't been able to comment on FT before, since it's been nearly impossible to find the game in any shop I visit, but yesterday, I did an amazing find in a Music/Film/Games-shop in Sundsvall.
I was just walking along, thinking "They probably don't have any adventure games here... Oh, where is the world coming to?" when I suddenly see the name "Sam & Max" in front of my eyes. I quickly grabbed the game to assure myself that I wasn't wrong. But I wasn't - Just seconds later I found both Full Throttle and The Dig there - So I bought all three for price of about 300 swedish crowns...
Oh, total joy and bliss... :)
Sorry about this rather unimportant story, but I can now say that I'm pretty glad that they decided to cancel FT2 if they didn't think it would live up the first game, because I really, really like it. A very good mix between action and adventure, I'd say.

Even though the points I made of the game were real, my post was mainly a joke.
:'( :'( :'(
no no no no no!!!! this is a bad dream... (slaps himself)
DAMMIT!! Why?! Why, God, why!!?? WHY did they cancel it!!?
Oh well, at least they're still gonna do Sam & Max 2... :-[
