Game idea (Catostrophica)

I have a really good concept for an adventure game. The only problem is I can't draw backgrounds, compose music or do any scripting or anything of that like. I just have the idea and the title "Catostrophica". The story would take place about 100 years in the future. A comet will impact Earth and cause mass destruction and havoc. (The comet impacting Earth would make for a really awesome cut scene). Then the main character would be a female scientest that is on a mission to save the planet from mass extiction. I have plenty of further storyline concepts and puzzle ideas...... But obviously I will need a lot of people to work on the project with me. Someone to do art, someone to do music and someone to scripting and other technical stuff. I am willing to commit a lot of time to the project anyone else interested please respond to this post. I would also welcome plot ideas, puzzle imput, dialogue help, and character creation. I know this all sounds very vague and it is just a raw concept but I think I can make this thing work with the right help. Although it would require lots of time and effort. So what does everybody think!?!?!

Hi,

People might be more willing to help if you have proved yourself first.  As it stands, I don't know what you will be putting into the project.  You might want to check out the Reality on the Norm project: http://ron.the-underdogs.info.  If you have no experience in drawing or scripting it might be a good place to start.

Ok I'm going to try to be as nice about this as I can...

All you have is an idea, ideas are nice and all, but they honestly don't mean anything... what you are asking for is someone to make your game for you, but not just someone, a whole group of someones...

As a matter of fact right now I can do the scripting, graphics and everything else, and just take your idea, and frankly there is nothing you can do about it. You can scream and whine all you want that "It was my idea" and all people will say is "Why didn't you do something with it"

Now I'm sorry, maybe I'm too harsh, but this kind of stuff irks me... if you want to learn scripting, break open the manual and learn... if you want to draw... try to draw... ask for advice to improve...

bottom line

AT LEAST FRICKIN TRY...

The Inquisitive Stranger

Actually, I HAVE worked on a couple of finished games. They just weren't made in AGS.

We probably need a FAQ page for questions like this.

If you have an idea but no useful skills in game making (e.g. drawing, music making, coding, whatever, but just writing a plot outline doesn't count because everybody has their own ideas) it's exceedingly unlikely that anyone will want you on their team.

However, on these forums, if you're a decent artist (with an idea) you can probably find a musician to help you for that part, and so on.

Dan_N

I agree.

What are you thinking man?!
(no offense)
First of all, graphics aren't that hard to do.
Second, try something, put in the critic's lounge and work on, people will help, you'll see.
Third, music is a bit trickier, so indeed you might want to ask for help on that.
Fourth, GET A CLUE of what you want to do, outline a story, characters, i consider myself somewhat of a SF (especially dark, horror or cyberpunk) writer so i could HELP (not think up the whole thing) if you ask.
Last, but not least: You don't actually need advanced scripting notions to make a good game, just read the intros in the manual right up to scripting and read the scripting tutorial too, just in case. Then, if you need help, SEARCH the manual! The manual is your friend!

Here's a word of advice (ignore it if you must): try making a game with your hands and just get some  music and maybe sound effects off the net, they're everywhere! You'll feel better when your game is posted and voted for and generally get a sense of "Yep, that's mine and i'm proud of it" and then a bolt of prideness hits you hard (and for that you need to hold on to something). Then, you'll look at your game and think: "Maybe i could of done THAT a lot better", and so you'll think about making a sequel which is better than the original. Think about it.

(P.S.: i'm pretty sure this thread doesn't belong here...).

I'm not..

We're not going to do everything for you.  Stop being lazy.  If you're crap at something, practice until you're not crap anymore.  I've been steadily improving my art skills for the last few years.  I've still not made anything.

No one's going to take you seriously if you come in and say something like:

I've got this idea.  Someone do all the hard work for me, because I'm crap.  I'll then take most the credit, since I'll be team leader.  While you're at it, could someone come round and do the dishes for me?  I'll supervise it, and then I can pretend I did all the work.

A lot of time doing what? Sitting around waiting for others to do stuff for you?

What seriously makes you think people will waste time and effort doing everything for you, when all you've done is come in and make the effort to post a vague plot idea and a request?  Have you offered your services to anyone else?  Maybe someone who's asked for dialog help?  Or puzzle help?  Have you done anything for anyone else in the community?

Stop moaning about what you can't do, and practice.  Failing that break out your wallet and hire people if the idea's that awesome.

Either way, put some effort in, somewhere.

Good luck, etc, but to be honest, the chances are you'll get about 1% into writing a synopsis for the idea and then give up because it requires too much effort.  I really do hope you'll prove me wrong and get something made, but sadly, I really doubt you'll have the slightest modicum of commitment.

I just want to understand what this guy is being berated for in this thread - Is it because he can't script, code or draw? Or is it simply because he literally only has an idea and naff all else to show for it?

Seems like a strange post maybe...but I just wanted to know, really.

I am in the process of writting a design document but it will take some time to do it throughly and well enough that it might entice others to take up any interest..... So I am doing more then running off at the mouth. So take it easy on me. lol

P.S. I am not twisting anyones arm, phew, gimme a break, just kicking around an idea. No need to get hostile about it.

It's his complete lack of effort so far.

Why didn't you do that before asking for help?

EDIT:

Also, MarkPhantom, I've just noticed you've gone about this the correct way.  Kudos and whatnot, on this post: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=27293.msg352918#msg352918

There's a thread for asking for help, which you've seen and used.  This random Beatle's fan has just jumped the gun and posted a whole new topic and in turn opened himself up for any abuse that follows.  He hasn't even taken the effort to read the first few topic titles on the page.  If he shows that amount of laziness, then I'm afraid he deserves every chastising he gets.

The Recruit A Team thread is there for a reason, and its not only there in case you have a problem, for which no-one else can help, and assuming you can find them..

I didn't have a model of a design document to follow (or before I say follow and get blasted for using the term "follow") or should I say as a guideline.... lol

I have an idea.

It involves a character.  In a place.

I expect the full game on my desk, packaged like a professional project, by tomorrow morning.

Clock's ticking, people.

Walrus,  you have to understand we get requests like yours every week or so.  It's difficult to take them seriously, and it's no surprise that tempers flare when a thread like this is started.

Don't bother defending yourself.  Just withdraw, make a few small games by yourself, build a reputation, and THEN you can ask people to assist with your masterpiece that will require lots of time and effort.

Again, I suggest giving RON a try.  That's how a bunch of agsers got their start (like Grundislav, AGA, SteveMcCrea, and myself).

thewalrus

Renal shutdown: Why don't you find someone else to abuse. It's not I like asked YOU for anything. So I don't know why you are so angered.

To everyone else who has viewed this thread and has not been a total jerk about it, I am going about this a more logical way by writting a design document. So therefore I am formally withdrawing my request for assistance. When I finish the doc. I will then post for help in a different thread. Thank you.

You know, I do read your posts as if you are fairly mature. You do seem to act like it and you do tend to write out your posts well, and then your last line of every post blows it all away. I can't tell if it's baby-speak or some reference to something that at least, I don't know.

-------

What some people do when needing to get a whole team assembled, such as in your case, is make a "skeleton game". This is a bare bones game, with outlined graphics and many images that will be replaced later. Then use this to demo out your game. When people see that you have great ideas in place, then they will be much more willing to come join your game.

The reward and gratification for just doing that, will be great for yourself.

Yes, it is a quote from a Beatles song. And the title of the song is my handle. And to let everyone know I am still writting a design document for my idea. It is quite involved and requires a lot of detail so it will take some time......

Man, are you guys still screwing arround with this thread?!

Ok, i'm going to say this once and only once (although no-one asked for my opinion and if someone posts a "no-one asked you anything, you little sh*thead" well i say "go suck on a- no, go-, oh, just go plain screw yourself 'cause it's a freakin' free forum, k?"):
Now, then... (removing foam from mouth just so it can be replenished...)
The Walrus (such a noble name) go THINK!!! Dammit, think of something like, hmm... i dunno a freakin' plot!!! (removing foam...) Man, don't get me wrong... You want to make a game... That's comendable and fine and dandy. You might not be much of a graphics person, but then look at all the other crap that's out there that looks like sh*t like some smacktard (i love that word; removing foam) was trying to guggle a pencil on his dick and it fell of drawing a line... He then did that many more times and came up with a sprite. Anyway, graphics isn't everything, it's merely an interface. Make it freakin' text-like, but at least have a FREAKIN' CLUE as to what the game will be, a concept, for God's sake! Then, you can get to actually making the game. Hire graphic artists only if you want elaborate drawings, k?
(removing foam...)
Now that the graphics problem is (freakin hopefully) solved, on to the next problem: every fu**ing thing else!! Man, being a not-so-good-graphics-guy-or-gal, isn't that bad but being a not-so-good-at-moving-my-arse-to-actually-do-something-other-than-bug-people-with-my-silly-ideeas-hoping-that-someone-else-will-make-my-game-for-me-and-then-sue-them-for-the-rights SMACKTARD (damn, i really love that word) is really REALLY bad. God!
(removing foam...)
(calming down)
*in breath*
*out breath*
Phew...
(no more foam)
Ok, now that i've calmed down...
Please, and i say this with all my heart, go and make even the crappiest game by YOURSELF, probably for MAGS, wich provides guidelines and pretty much eliminates the script and thought process all together.
Ok?
Can we kill this useless topic, PLEASE?...
('cause i'm running out of pills...)

EDIT: I leave the afore mentioned words just to prove my point and ad: good job, you're on the right track. Get to it (dammit)!
