I'm toying around with a side project while I work on "Henchman", of making a graphical remake of "Nord and Bert Couldn't Make Head or Tail of It". I loved that game when I was younger, and thought it would be cool to be able to see all that stuff the text described. . .I'm planning a combination of mouse control and text parser (for things like the spoonerism level where a mouse can't really express it). What do you all think?
I just have to say... Why not finish your first game before starting another?
I'm not really an example setter on that issue but it seems like a better deal.
As a seasoned remaker-wannabe (quit sniggerin', Dave!) I say it's a kewl idea, but get your stuff straight. Don't assume that just because it's all done you'll have less work that way. Work the way you'd work on an original. Otherwise the remake won't see the light of day either.
Go idea, says I. Infocom had great games.
I could imagine that a text adventure based around puns wouldn't work too well as a graphical version.
Half the fun of that game was imagining what the hell was going on.
Unless you're an artist with considerable skill, I doubt you'd do it justice.
I'd remake something simpler like Enchanter (hah!).
Nord and Bert is one of those games that couldn't ever work as a graphical game. The puzzles are too verbal. If you can think of a way to portray a head louse as a lead house, or a gritty pearl as a pretty girl, then you will have truly impressed me.
Thanks for the responses, all. . .yeah, I'm definitely going to finish Henchman before I even think about starting a new one now.Ã, If I attempt it, I really want to do Nord and Bert justice, not give both games half my attention.Ã, So no worries there. :)Ã, And I know how much work I'd have to do including all the little funny things unrelated to the puzzles.
I was thinking of separating the eight chapters of the game and doing one at a time, maybe starting with Shake a Tower or something, then later working on the Farm, Jack, etc.Ã, The way I planned on doing all the puns-changing-to-other-puns thing was having the name of the object, say "gritty pearl", appearing over the object when your mouse moves over it, and it's shining on the door in the graphic, yeah, but also if you Look at the pearl your character will say "It's shining on the door." or something equally descriptive that prompts the character like it does in the game.Ã, When encountering a pun like that, the character would be able to enter their response into a text parser.
I think I could do the graphics justice, although converting text games, as you mentioned, takes away the fun of individual imagination.Ã, I can promise I wouldn't have it come out looking like KQ1.Ã, Judging by my graphics style so far, it would probably resemble the more cartoon-oriented graphics of KQ7.Ã, I'd use morph-between animations for all the different conversions, head louse to lead house, etc., showing one object amusingly changing into the other.
Anyway, it's half a year off if it's to be done at all.Ã, I'd been re-playing Wishbringer, Beyond Zork, the Enchanter Trilogy and a few others trying to see if maybe they might offer good possibilities as well.Ã, I really think I could pull this off, though, once my attention's all free, and see how the first one goes.Ã, If nobody likes it, nothing's lost. :)Ã, Just wanted to see what general response to the idea would be.Ã, Thanks!
(Edit: I just Google Image searched for KQ7 stuff. . .okay, my graphics would *resemble* those of the game, but would be nowhere near as incredibly, detailed-ly done. Still, the cartoon-as-compared-to-realistic angle still stands. :)
