Title: Games in the AGS banner
Post by: tamper on Mon 22/09/2003 17:07:26
I was browsing the forums earlier today and briefly there was an ALT tag on the AGS banner (like the one at the top of this page) which listed all the games shown in the banner.

Now it's gone. Is anyone up to the challenge of listing the games (L to R) shown in the banner?

Sorry - very first post to this board, and it's deathly-dull and n00bish...

Must do better,
t

This has been asked a lot...

the tag still works actually but since I'm such a nice guy here's the list: Permanent Daylight, RON: I Spy, ROdekill, Larry Vales, Pleurghburg, Crown of Gold, Richard Longhurst & the Box That Ate Time, Night of the Hermit, Lassi Quest

Thanks - you *are* a nice guy!

Interesting what you say about the tag - I couldn't get it working in IE6, but having viewed the source of the page the list is indeed there.

As for it being asked a lot, a search on 'banner' yielded no answers...

Thanks again

Well, it was asked a lot in the old days, until we added the alt tag - those posts have probably expired by now :)

On a totally unrelated topic, I just realised we all forgot AGS's 4th birthday last week. So erm break open the champagne and stuff.
:P

Ah. That's why AGS was being a passive-aggressive bitch last week.  :P

The older you get, the less important birthdays seem...

Still, I'll give a personal toast to the old girl when I'm getting hammered this weekend.

By "get it working", I assume you mean having it popup a tooltip thingy.

Using the "alt" attribute to create tooltips has never been correct behaviour, it's another example of Microsoft flagrantly disobeying the rules.  According to official HTML specifications, the "alt" attribute is supposed to provide a text equivalent for the image to be used instead of the image when the image cannot be displayed - either because the page is loaded by a text-only (or audio-based) browser, or the image cannot be downloaded, or the user has images turned off.

Now that the "title" attribute has been introduced to provide tooltip text for ANY tag (not just images, but links, paragraphs, and anything else), it seems even Microsoft has decided to follow the rules about "alt" attributes.

So, basically, CJ or whoever takes care of the site needs to change the image tag to comply with official HTML specifications, something like this:

(img src="img url" alt="Adventure Game Studio" title="Example games: list of games")

Using angle brackets instead of parentheses, of course.  The "alt" should read "Adventure Game Studio" because that's the actual text that appears on the banner, whereas the "title" attribute can provide the additional information that's relevant whether the image is visible or not.  The list of games should preceeded by a bit of text like "Example games: " so that it makes sense even of someone can't see the picture itself.

All modern browsers -- Gecko (Mozilla, Netscape 6+, Firebird, Camino, etc), Opera, and apparently even IE6 (which is otherwise about 3 years behind the curve) -- follow correct behaviour for "alt" and "title" attributes.

Dork.

Pardon?  Was that directed at me?  I certainly don't see what I did that would call for such a remark.

Doesn't look much like a joke to me, but I'll take your word for it.

Well, you just posted several paragraphs of info about alt tags and tooltips, and I called you a dork. No offense meant of course. Look at my weekly post count and we'll see who the real dork is...  ;)

edit, PS. I just noticed that my weekly post count is currently at 42. Guess I'm definately the bigger dork here.

Speaking of the games in the banner, was Crown of Gold ever finished? I remember playing Chapter 1 a year ago and loving it. Now I don't even see it in the demos section.. or in the completed games section (short, medium or full).

You don't find Crown of Gold, it finds you, whenever you're ready. Patience.

And yeah, Ruykage, only dorks could care to write so much about something so meaningless

/me thinks about writing a long article about the differences between the terms dork, nerd and geek, then gives up and links to a Cat and Girl comic instead
