Title: Games that should get their fangames?
Post by: Cyrus on Tue 10/04/2012 16:27:22
As you all know, Monkey Island and DOTT have tons of fangames. Sam & Max, Zak McKracken and Broken Sword have much fewer. Runaway has just one (http://www.runaway15.de/) (and so do Toonstruck and Jack Orlando), and many adventures (especially the less known ones) have none at all. What adventures, in your opinion, should get a fangame? (some specific fangame ideas, like titles, plot details and preferred graphic styles, are welcome).

Wishbringer, Simon the Sorcerer, Kyrandia. And also I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.

Wishbringer's my favourite; I have even started some work on a graphical remake. It would make the perfect template for a small AGS game (SWARM project comes to mind). Could be a rather simple graphic style, somewhat King's Questish. The game map isn't that large and the plot is small, and I think it would work well with the MegaVerb template.

If I were ever to buy an IP to make a game in someone else's universe, it would be The Space Bar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Space_Bar).  Best (deeply flawed) game ever!

Hope you get further than that other guy a few years back who was reusing Return to Zork's graphics did.

Yes, I'd love to have a version of The Space Bar with a decent user interface and some of the rough edges polished.

Planetfall. Clock Tower. Silent Hill. Tex Murphy. The Mystery of Haunted Hollow (I think it had enough promise as a world to expand on). Laura Bow. Codename: ICEMAN. Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong, and Metroid, the adventure games. Mortal Kombat. Jazz Jackrabbit. Alan Wake. Dead Space. Mass Effect. Resident Evil. Sweet Home.

Nice to see Jazz Jackrabbit mentioned. I'd add Halloween Harry as another 90s PC platformer.

For adventures... I'll second Simon the Sorcerer. I was put off the new games utterly by the trailer which just looked painfully un-Simon like.

One of the big ones for me is Discworld. 3 solid games (I wouldn't go so far as to say great because all have their flaws) and a massively popular franchise with tons of nerdy fans... I've been amazed that their hasn't been fan sequels for Rincewind or Lewton's ongoing adventures.

Lack of a fan Full Throttle 2 is also conspicuous. I mean, it has an open ending..

This came up before when someone (maybe Cyrus?) asked a similar question about remakes instead of fangames, but yes, SOMEONE PLEASE REMAKE SIMON THE SORCERER 3 IN 2D!

As far as fan-games, I always thought Beneath the Steel Sky built up a detailed and interesting world to have many other games in :D.

There was a German team working on it, but it's beyond safe to say that project is dead by now. And they didn't seem to be terribly ambitious - backgrounds were scarcely detailed and they were just using the voice files from the game. It didn't take long to realise how many problems that would create with puzzles that would need to be entirely re-worked in 2D.

I would like to see it done simply so people could enjoy Simon 3. It is - and I must be the only person to say this - one of my absolute favourite adventure games. It's very fun, very long and its plot got pretty epic by the series standards. Sadly, it was glitchy and ugly nearly nobody seemed to really get into it...

I saw glimmers of what could've been a good game, Jared, I just couldn't stand the interface and handling and graphics and controls enough to find out. I am surprised you were able to.

Anyone know who has the licenses to Jack T. Ladd and Ysanne Andropath? I enjoyed the second game in that series quite a bit.  I know the Psygnosis Limited properties have wound up in different places.

EDIT: ...By which I mean I was confused and it looks like everything Psygnosis is now owned by Sony.

Holy shit Cyrus, I was JUST coming on here to say Discworld. That was one of my all-time favorite series! Maybe we can get one going and get Eric Idle to voice it again. It's funny because my brother and I are the only two people I know who ever played it (and loved it) but I'm in Arizona. I'm assuming it was much more popular in the UK by most of you guys.

I find it really, really odd with adventure games coming back that there hasn't been any talk over the license for Discworld games. Not even any attempt to remake Discworld II for iPad or anything like that. It's crazy!

If you're serious about the idea I can draw cartoon characters and know the books well but I'm not great at animation. I can do a little bit but it tends to look choppy.

Well like I said I would lend my voice to the game in a heart beat. I would certainly help out in any other way as far as story, dialogue and anything else not TOO specialized. Consider me part of the "team" if this becomes a reality.

I hope it does! I'd suggest using an art style similar to Discworld II, it can be either an original story or an adaptation of one of Pratchett's novels.

Cyrus, where would the appropriate place be in the forums be to start a "pre-recruitment" thread to see who is interested in taking part in this? At least we could gauge how serious people would be and whether or not its worth the time and effort.

I'm also thinking about Tony Tough 3. It's a cool and undeservedly forgotten game that was recently ported on DotEmu: http://www.dotemu.com/en/download-game/4601/tony-tough-and-the-night-of-roasted-moths

There was a 3D sequel called Rake's Progress, but I desperately want a third installment.

And you have my tablet...wait, did you say LOTR or Discworld?

But seriously, I played just one Discworld game long time ago, but I really like the books and I like the style of the 2d DW games (the 3d was just meh, although I'm up for making props and stuff in 3d if that's needed). Though it'd be more fun to make an original game based on one or more DW novels, there's plenty of good detective ones that could be meshed together and basically all of them have the "hero will save the world" story arc in them.

I like the idea of taking a lesser-known character and telling the story from their point of view.  Of course we could always make a business simulator starring CMOT Dibbler...  :-D

Well even a new character could very easily fit in such a diverse and colourful world.
Besides, you couldn't really have a Dibbler trade simulator, everything would always be on sale.

This way it would be a fan game of a game from a fan of a fan of games. :=

Psychonauts. Let me quote a really interesting idea from the Double Fine forums:
Quote
Well, since I doubt we're going to ever get any sort of direct sequel to Psychonauts, I think it'd be great if DF made a simple 2D point-and-click task completion game within the Psychonauts universe. I was thinking something along the lines of that old Pink Panther game, Passport to Peril, in the sense of art direction and the way you went around the world and had to complete puzzles and tasks to get places.

It really seems to fit the whole secret agent thing the Psychonauts have going on, so maybe it could also be centered around Sasha and Milla?
