Hi,

I thought I'd post here coz I was just wondering something. Does anyone here still (or have you ever) liked the idea of a new Quest For Glory like adventure game? I'm asking because I was one of the technical developers on the Hero6 project. I do feel like I did partially waste my life because it doesn't seem to be going anywhere at all and the main contributors have all lost interest and buggered off......myself included. This is why I was also considering open-sourcing part of Hero6 to the wide AGS community (the old MAD engine was abandoned in favour of AGS a few years back).

But I was curious as to the interest of the genre resurfacing in this community. The only decent games in this genre so far have been the QFG2VGA by AGDI and QFG4 1/2. While there was still a few determined to keep the QFG genre alive, the strength of this small isolated community seemed to be all but diminished.

I would like to see a new QFG styled game and would love to see Hero6 completed but I doubt it will happen because of us guys behind it never wanted it to be another case of what Duke Nukem Forever ended up. Otherwise, we might as well call it "Hero's Quest Forever".  ;D

I've looked at the most recent build of Hero6 - there's a lot done, and a lot of it looks really nice!  But the story is a mess.... disjointed and it doesn't flow well.... There's a lot of good ideas in there, just poorly placed.... it could be a great game, though.

I think the problem was the freeness of the development.  There was never a clear leader or a clear vision..... too many cooks spoiling the pot, so to say.

I'd love to see the game completed.  If one had the patience and time, they could go through the source and make a workable game out of what they have.

I hope someone does!

I've actually been trying to work on a QFG type game for a few months, and now I'm actually starting to get a team together. I just posted this yesterday in the recruitment thread, interestingly enough:

QuoteDo you like the Quest for Glory series?

Do you like the prospect of three distinct character classes and three vastly different gameplay experiences?

Do you like making adventure games?

If you answered yes to the above, then we want you to join the team for Peril Quest (working name).

Our goal is to create a series of games in the same vein as the amazing QFG series, including character classes, stat and skill progression, combat, and fantastic puns! As of now, our team consists of two members, and we have great plans for this series.

We've whipped up an example background for you to feast your eyes on.

As you can see, we are working with 3D models for the game, but fear not! The generic buildings you see above are just placeholders, and there will most certainly be a much larger variety to the models and backgrounds when the game is further along.

As of now, we need plenty of talented people who want to participate in a project like this, including:

Artists (2D or 3D)

Programmers (any language)

Scripters

Animators

Musicians

And anyone else who has something to offer for a project like this.

Thank you all, and PM either myself or Stile for more information or if you want to join the team!

If you would be interested in helping out, definitely let me know... we're moving along pretty nicely now, and some extra help, i.e. with art, music, scripting, or just general ideas would definitely help us move along quicker!

So... as an answer to your question, yes! Quest for Glory was such an awesome series, and we are working on a fan game for it!

What happened to Quest for Infamy, Blackthorne? :(

I love Quest for Glory style games, for the record.  I'd like the action elements to be better designed, taking into account modern control schemes rather than dated numeric keypad methods, but aside from improving the combat elements I'd definitely like another QfG game.

Hell, I've been wanting to make one for ages but I just have too much going on and I tend to lose interest if I don't finish a game in 1-2 months.

I saw this thread, and it brought up something I wanted to mention...

Now, bear in mind, this is a "what if" scenario.

What if the whole Quest for Glory anthology (includining QG5) were all redone... in the style of anime?!

Yeah, kind of like the cartoony style of King's Quest VII or Torin's Passage, but in the style of a Japanese anime?

Hey, come on--I like the anime style, and I can be safe to say there is a small yet substantial number of AGS users who also like the anime/manga style.

It'd also be kind of interesting for voices too... maybe friends in Japan could offer to do the Japanese voices (and the text in the dialogue boxes could serve as make-shift "subtitling"), and some people could do the English voices (or whatever the native language in that region is).

Yea I don't think that would work.

Quest For Infamy got to be too big of a project for us to work on.  We had great intentions 7 years ago, but didn't have the experience to do it.  So we worked on remaking King's Quest III to gain experience and learn how to make a game.  We did that, and started our Space Quest 2 remake shortly after we finished KQIII, all while hemming and hawing about QFI.  With Space Quest 2 ending up taking us longer that we wanted - life got in the way.  A lot of us got married, had kids - my kidneys failed again and I went back on dialysis..... life got in the way.

Ultimately, we decided that we just didn't have the time to make QFI the way we wanted; not making it in our free time as a free release too.  I always say we could do it, if we got a budget.... and sold the final product.  (And we wrote a version that is completely free of QFG-properties)

Typical story; big ambition, but when we got into it - realized it's a lot harder to do than you think.

I am more upset about your kidneys than the game.  I hope you bounce back!

Working on it.  I've been back on dialysis for the past four years - and I've been on the transplant list just as long.  I recently got a call - I was a backup for a kidney that came in.  Though it didn't go to me, it means I'm very high on the list.  Could be any day now that I get the call and get a kidney.  Couldn't come soon enough  - It's really starting to wear me down.

Who knows.  Maybe after I have a transplant, I'll get super-charged and start up QFI again!

How about this one?

Blackthorne

Oh, yeah - definitely Heroine's Quest.  I am very excited for that game.  The graphics not only look great and have that classic feel, It's being made by Crystal Shard, who has a great track record in game production!

How's progress coming along on that one?

Thanks, BT :) It's making good progress, but will take quite a bit more time because of the work involved; particularly the huge amount of sprites (~4500 and counting). Plot and music are pretty much done, as is most of the room art.

Also, good luck with your kidney!

Sorry to hear that Blackthorne. I'm quite expecting the Space Quest 2 Remake, since day one, but we all know sometimes life gets in the way, either in happy ways or in sad ways.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Yeah, I can imagine that game has a TON of sprites to do.  But I am really eagerly waiting for it.... I've always been a big fan of the Quest For Glory games - this one looks like a great spiritual successor to it.
